Build an optimised landing page by starting with the visitor’s goal, then shaping the message, design, action, accessibility, performance and search setup around it. There is no universal page template or conversion-rate promise: the right choices depend on the audience, offer and traffic source. Use this sequence to create a page that is clear to people and accessible to search systems.
Start with the visitor, entry point and goal
Before writing copy or choosing a layout, define who the page serves, what they expect to find and what one primary action they should be able to take. A visitor arriving from a search result may need a different explanation from someone who clicked an ad or a link in an email.

- Audience: Who is the page for, and what question or need brought them here?
- Promise: What information, service or offer will the page provide?
- Action: What is the main next step, such as requesting details or signing up?
- Entry point: What message or expectation did the visitor encounter before landing here?
For paid traffic, align the landing page with the ad’s keywords, promise and call to action. Google Ads Help advises making important information easy to find, keeping mobile navigation simple and helping visitors reach the action they came for. That alignment is particularly relevant to ad traffic; it does not mean every organic landing page must follow an advertising template. Google Ads Help: landing page experience

Put the offer and its main benefit where visitors can find them quickly. Give enough detail to help them decide, but keep the content focused on the page’s purpose. A landing page may need different supporting information depending on whether the visitor is comparing options, seeking an answer or ready to act.

Write clear copy and create visual hierarchy
Draft the message before polishing the visuals. Use concise, direct wording and terms the audience understands. Make the headline, supporting information and primary action easy to distinguish, and use descriptive headings to divide longer content. Link text should make sense on its own rather than relying on surrounding copy to explain it. GOV.UK guidance on writing for interfaces
Keep visual elements that support the visitor’s task prominent, and avoid clutter that competes with the main purpose. On mobile and desktop, visitors should be able to locate the important information and understand the available next step without navigating a confusing layout. Make the primary action easy to complete
Place the intended action where it is understandable and convenient to reach. Make sure its wording reflects what the visitor was promised; a button that implies a different outcome can undermine confidence. Keep navigation straightforward and make any necessary contact information easy to find, particularly on mobile. The best interaction depends on the task: a short inquiry and a detailed application may reasonably require different steps.

Build accessibility into the page
Accessibility is part of creating a usable page, not a final polish step. Use meaningful headings and link text, accessible styles and components, and check that the page works for people using assistive technology. GOV.UK recommends considering accessibility when creating, updating or managing a service and points to testing with assistive technology. GOV.UK: making your service accessible
Check mobile usability and Core Web Vitals
Test the page on mobile as well as desktop. Google’s current Core Web Vitals guidance sets these “good” experience targets:

Optimise the landing page for SEO
Make the page useful and discoverable
Write for people first: make the page helpful, reliable and specific to its purpose. Use the words your intended audience searches for in prominent places such as the page title and main heading when they accurately describe the content. Google’s Search Essentials explain recommended practices, but meeting them does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed or shown in results. Google Search Essentials

Write a unique page title and description
Give each page a concise, descriptive title that reflects its content. Avoid boilerplate titles and keyword stuffing. The HTML title informs Google’s systems, but Google can draw search-result title links from multiple sources, so the displayed wording is not fully controlled by the page’s title tag. Google Search Central: title links
A search snippet is usually drawn from page content; Google may sometimes use the meta description. Write a succinct description that accurately summarizes the page, but keep the key promise visible in the page itself rather than relying on a search snippet to communicate it. Use crawlable links and check rendering
Make internal links real links that search systems can crawl. Google says it can generally parse an <a> element with an href attribute and uses links to discover pages and understand relevance. Google Search Central: crawlable links

Review the page after launch
Launch is the start of measurement, not proof that the page works. Use available analytics, search and performance data to locate friction, then make changes that address what you observe. Search Console reports and Lighthouse can help assess search and page-experience issues. Evaluate results in the context of your own audience, traffic source, sample and dates; official guidance does not establish a universal landing-page conversion rate or a fixed uplift from a particular layout or headline.
