How to Build an Authenticated Local Loopback Bridge for Browser AI Chats

A loopback address is not authentication. A secure browser-to-local bridge must account separately for Local Network Access permission, CORS, and the service’s own authorization checks.

A browser AI chat can talk to a companion app over loopback, but a localhost address is not a login. A sound design treats the connection as three separate gates: browser permission to reach a local service, browser rules governing whether page JavaScript can read the response, and the bridge’s own authentication and authorization checks. Passing one gate does not pass the others.

What a local loopback bridge does

A loopback bridge is a local service that accepts requests through a loopback network interface so a browser-based AI chat can exchange data with an app on the same device. This can connect a web interface to local functionality without making the service generally available on the network. Binding to loopback limits network exposure, but it does not establish which browser page or local process is making a request.

The available browser and standards guidance supports the architecture and its constraints, not a specific implementation, token format, port, protocol, or programming language. The design below is therefore a set of recommendations, not a claim about one deployed bridge.

Design it as three independent security gates

1. Browser permission: may this page reach the local service?

In browsers that implement Local Network Access (LNA), a public-origin page may need the user’s permission to connect to a local or loopback endpoint. These protections apply to supported request types including Fetch and WebSockets, but support and behavior vary by browser and version. MDN describes LNA permissions as limited to secure contexts. See MDN’s Local network access security overview and the Chrome team’s Local Network Access guidance.

For the relevant Chrome Fetch pattern, the guidance says to specify targetAddressSpace: 'loopback'. It also says: “MANDATORY: Serve any web application that initiates local or loopback network requests from a Secure Context (https://).” Treat that as Chrome team implementation guidance, not a guarantee that every browser behaves identically. Give users context before a connection triggers a permission prompt; do not make the first prompt-triggering request silently on page load. Check current support before relying on these behaviors.

2. Same-origin policy and CORS: may page JavaScript read the response?

A browser can block JavaScript from reading a cross-origin response even if a request reaches the service. CORS is the mechanism by which a service indicates which browser origins may read its responses; it does not authenticate the caller or authorize an operation. The distinction is crucial: a permissive CORS response is not a user identity check, and a restrictive CORS policy is not a substitute for bridge authentication. See RFC 10017, OAuth 2.0 for Browser-Based Applications.

3. Bridge authorization: should this caller be allowed to do this?

The local service must make its own decision about whether a request is authorized and which operations it permits. Browser permission only governs access under browser rules, while CORS governs whether browser JavaScript can read a response. Neither establishes that a request carries valid application credentials. Likewise, an app-level credential cannot override a browser’s permission prompt or cross-origin restrictions. This separation is an architectural synthesis of the browser and standards guidance.

Recommended request flow for a browser AI chat

  1. Serve the chat from HTTPS. For Chrome’s documented local/loopback request guidance, the initiating web application should be served from a secure context.
  2. Explain the connection before requesting it. Tell the user what local companion app the page will contact and what feature needs the connection. Trigger the initial local request from a clear user action rather than silently on page load.
  3. Make the local request in the browser-supported form. For the relevant Chrome Fetch pattern, declare targetAddressSpace: 'loopback' as Chrome’s guide directs. Verify current implementation and browser support rather than assuming a uniform prompt or API behavior.
  4. Apply origin policy and app authentication separately. Configure cross-origin response access for the intended web origin, then have the bridge independently authenticate the request and authorize the requested action. Do not treat CORS success as proof of identity.
  5. Return only the response the authorized operation needs. Keep the bridge’s API limited to the functions the chat requires. This is a design recommendation; the cited guidance does not define a particular API surface or credential scheme.

What “authenticated” should mean here

Authentication answers who or what is making a request; authorization answers what that caller may do. For a local AI bridge, the service needs an app-level check before carrying out privileged work, even when the request originates on the same computer. A loopback-only listener narrows where network connections can come from, but it does not distinguish the intended chat page from another local caller.

The sources do not prescribe a token format, credential lifetime, storage location, rotation process, or pairing flow for this kind of bridge. Those choices should be made for the actual product and threat model, rather than presented as browser requirements. Whatever mechanism is chosen, keep its responsibility distinct from CORS and browser LNA permission.

Keep OAuth callback handling separate from bridge requests

A bridge may participate in an OAuth sign-in flow, but an OAuth callback listener is not the same thing as authentication for every later bridge request. RFC 8252 is the IETF Best Current Practice for OAuth in native apps. For a desktop app receiving an OAuth redirect, it describes HTTP redirect URIs using an IPv4 or IPv6 loopback IP literal and a port selected by the app. It recommends loopback-only listening, opening the port only for the authorization request, and closing it when the response arrives. Its guidance states: “Clients should listen on the loopback network interface only, in order to avoid interference by other network actors,” and “Clients should open the network port only when starting the authorization request and close it once the response is returned.” Read the full RFC 8252 for context.

RFC 8252 also requires public native clients to implement PKCE. PKCE protects an intercepted authorization code from being redeemed without the verifier; it is not a general-purpose credential for every ordinary bridge call. Do not leave an OAuth callback listener running as a standing substitute for the bridge’s own authorization checks.

HTTP loopback service or Chrome Native Messaging?

Loopback HTTP or WebSocket access is not the only way for a browser extension to communicate with an installed app. Chrome Native Messaging lets an extension exchange messages with a registered native host; Chrome’s documentation says the host receives the caller’s origin, usually a chrome-extension:// origin, as its first argument. That is useful caller context, not proof that the host can skip its own authorization decisions. The documentation establishes this Chrome API behavior, not a universal security ranking.

Design consideration Loopback HTTP or WebSocket Chrome Native Messaging
Browser reachability Subject to browser request rules, including LNA behavior in supporting implementations; coverage varies by browser and version. Chrome extension-to-native-host API; the cited documentation describes Chrome, not cross-browser availability.
Extension and installation model A browser extension is not established as a requirement by the cited guidance; the web page makes a local network request. Requires an extension and an installed, registered native host, as described in Chrome’s Native Messaging documentation.
Caller information Browser origin and CORS rules are relevant, but the cited sources do not establish an app-authenticated caller identity for a loopback request. Chrome supplies the caller’s origin to the native host as its first argument; the host still has to decide what to authorize.
Permission and origin policy Browser permission and same-origin/CORS behavior can affect the request and response. Uses Chrome’s extension/native-host messaging mechanism rather than a page’s ordinary HTTP request to a local endpoint; comparative permission details are not stated in the cited source.
Secret handling, rotation, and local-process exposure Not stated in the cited sources; the service must define its own authentication and authorization design. Not stated in the cited sources; the host must define its own authentication and authorization design.
Performance, supported operating systems, and recovery behavior Not stated in the cited sources. Not stated in the cited sources.

Choose based on the intended browser and installation experience, extension requirement, permission behavior, host registration and update burden, and the app’s ability to authenticate and constrain requests. The available documentation does not establish that either design is categorically safer or better for a browser AI chat.

Browser behavior is still evolving

The Local Network Access draft explains that CORS alone does not block every request pattern motivating local-network protections. Its implementation note says Chromium enforces LNA restrictions for public-to-local or loopback requests, but not cross-origin local requests. Because this is a changing draft and implementation detail, verify the current note and browser behavior before relying on it: WICG Local Network Access draft. Do not infer that a permission prompt, or its absence, is a universal caller-authentication signal.
