Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can build and test an original Atari 2600 game without owning a console. Start with a small game idea, choose either batari Basic for a gentler entry or DASM assembly for direct control, then assemble the game and run its ROM in Stella, a multi-platform emulator with debugging tools.
Choose a small first game
Keep the first project narrow enough to understand as a complete loop. For example, let the player move one object, avoid or collect one target, track a simple score or game state, and restart after a win or loss. Treat this as a practical scope suggestion, not a hardware requirement.

The goal is to complete the whole cycle: show something on screen, respond to input, handle a collision or other event, and return to a playable state. A small finished game is a better first milestone than a large idea with unfinished graphics and rules.
Choose how you want to code
| Route | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| batari Basic through Atari Dev Studio | Beginners who want a BASIC-like starting point | It is less direct than assembly for low-level hardware work; consult current tool documentation for language limits. |
| DASM assembly through Atari Dev Studio or another setup | Developers who want direct control and to learn the platform at a low level | You need to learn assembly as well as Atari-specific programming details. |
Atari Dev Studio documents both batari Basic and DASM as routes for Atari 2600 development. batari Basic is an approachable entry point, but it does not remove the need to understand how the game fits the console. Choose assembly if that low-level detail is part of what you want to learn.

Set up the tools
Atari Dev Studio is an extension for Visual Studio Code on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Its project documentation says current releases include batari Basic, 7800basic, DASM, Stella, and A7800. Check the project’s current release and platform notes before following version-specific setup steps: Atari Dev Studio project documentation.
You do not need every included tool for a first Atari 2600 project. Pick one coding route, use the matching assembler or build support, and use Stella to run and inspect the resulting game ROM.
Build, run, and debug in a loop
- Create a small project. In Visual Studio Code, install and open Atari Dev Studio, then follow the extension’s current project setup instructions for the route you chose.
- Follow a small working example. Use it to understand how the source code, graphics, and timing fit together; change one feature at a time rather than starting with a large game.
- Build the ROM. Use the extension’s documented build process for batari Basic or DASM. If the build reports an error, fix that before moving on to emulator testing.
- Run the ROM in Stella. Atari Dev Studio documents launching Stella for testing. Stella is a freely distributed, multi-platform Atari 2600 emulator with a built-in debugger and static and runtime analysis features; see the Stella User’s Guide.
- Inspect and repeat. Test the control, screen output, collision or event handling, and restart path. Use Stella’s debugger and analysis tools when something does not behave as expected, then edit, rebuild, and test again.
Learn the Atari 2600’s constraints as you go
Read a hardware reference alongside the code rather than waiting until a project is finished. Stella’s homebrew development page links to the Stella Programmer’s Guide, bank-switching documentation, and community tutorial collections. Follow a small example and work out what its code is doing, especially where graphics and timing are involved.

For a historical and design-oriented view of the system, MIT Press lists Racing the Beam: The Atari Video Computer System. Its current retail availability is not established here, so treat it as an optional reading reference, not a required development tool.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test in an emulator first; consider a console later
Stella is enough to begin the build-and-test cycle, so an original console is not a prerequisite. Emulator testing is convenient, but the available documentation does not establish exact parity with every physical console or television setup.
If you later want to test on original hardware, you will need console access and a compatible way to load the ROM. Historical homebrew projects have used third-party cartridges, but current models, compatibility, and availability are not established here. Check those details before buying hardware; do not assume that a particular cartridge will work with your console or game.
