First decide what “Arcana-focused” means for your character: strong Arcana skill checks, a character built around arcane spellcasting, or both. Those goals use separate character-building choices. If you want a magical scholar who studies and casts spells, Wizard is the most direct thematic starting point; if you mainly want to excel at Arcana checks, choose the party role you want and then look for a rules-legal way to gain Arcana proficiency.
Before choosing options, confirm the campaign’s edition, allowed books, starting level, and playtest policy with your Dungeon Master (DM). D&D Beyond’s 2024 character-creation guidance recommends discussing the planned game with the DM before settling on a character.

Decide what “Arcana-focused” means for your character
Arcana is a character skill; arcane spellcasting is a character concept and set of class abilities. They can fit together, but one does not automatically provide the other. A character with strong Arcana checks is not necessarily a spellcaster, and choosing a spellcasting class does not by itself establish expertise in Arcana.
- Arcana skill specialist: You want to identify or understand arcane subjects reliably. Prioritize a legal way to gain Arcana proficiency, while choosing a class for the role you want to play.
- Arcane caster: You want your character’s main identity to be learning and wielding arcane magic. Wizard is the most direct thematic fit in the official class material.
- Both: Plan skill proficiency separately from class and spell choices. Check the character-creation rules available to your campaign for how to gain Arcana proficiency; do not assume a particular class automatically grants it.
Check the campaign rules before choosing options
Character options depend on the game your DM is running. Ask about the edition and permitted rulebooks, the starting level, and whether playtest material is allowed. The official 2024 character-creation guidance also puts the campaign conversation and character origin and ability scores among the early creation decisions. Use the rules your table has approved rather than mixing options from different editions or assuming every published playtest option is available.

Choose a route that matches your role
For a magical scholar and full caster
Start with Wizard if you want study and arcane spellcasting to define the character. Then consider the kind of scholar you want to portray and choose spells and other options from the sources your DM permits. This is a thematic recommendation, not a claim that Wizard is mechanically best for every Arcana check or every party.
For Arcana checks first
Choose a class according to the party job and play style you want, then use the applicable character-creation rules to pursue Arcana proficiency. The available guidance here does not establish a complete class-by-class proficiency map for 2024 rules, so verify the permitted options in your books rather than relying on a generic level-by-level recipe.

For a blend of magic and broad interests
If you want arcane magic alongside nature- or divine-themed abilities, decide how much of the character’s identity should come from each. A community search phrase such as “Best DnD2024 build to be an all around magic user? (arcane/nature/divine)” illustrates the kind of mixed-concept question players ask, but it is not an official build recommendation. Compare options by role, campaign legality, desired Arcana-check performance, and the breadth of spellcasting you want.

When planning the character, write down the two goals independently: how you will pursue Arcana proficiency under your table’s rules, and which class and spell options support the character’s magical identity. A high Arcana check modifier does not grant additional spells, and spellcasting does not establish Arcana expertise. Confirm any proficiency choices against the character-creation rules allowed in the campaign.

Treat Unearthed Arcana as playtest material
The 2025 Arcane Subclasses PDF says it uses 2024 Player’s Handbook rules and presents its subclasses as playtest material. Playtest options may change before official publication, so ask your DM before building around one and do not treat it as universally available official character content.

For a character using revised 2024 rules, consult the 2024 Player’s Handbook or the corresponding rules your campaign permits, and verify the edition and source list with your DM. D&D Beyond’s official character-creation guidance recognizes a digital character sheet as one way to track a character; whichever format you use, keep your skill choices and spellcasting choices distinct on the sheet.
