An IBM Z API architecture commonly gives three products three different jobs: IBM z/OS Connect exposes existing z/OS applications and data through REST APIs; IBM API Connect organizes, governs, and publishes those APIs; and IBM DataPower Gateway processes requests and enforces gateway policies at runtime. Together, they can put a managed API in front of existing CICS, IMS, Db2 for z/OS, batch, or Java assets without requiring the underlying business program to be rewritten as a microservice.
What does “a microservice API on Z” mean?
In the architecture described by Joseph Gulla in his October 6, 2026, TechChannel overview, the API is an interface to existing z/OS capabilities, not necessarily a new microservice containing the business logic. A REST endpoint can present a modern request-and-response interface while a transaction or program on the mainframe continues to do the work behind it.

For example, a CICS transaction implemented in COBOL can remain in place while z/OS Connect provides a REST/JSON interface to it. The API layer translates between the representation expected by the consumer and the data or call format expected by the existing program. The right design depends on the backend and its interface; the example is an illustration, not a universal implementation recipe.
What does each product do?
| Product | Primary responsibility | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| IBM z/OS Connect | Expose z/OS applications and data as REST APIs, and enable z/OS applications to invoke external APIs. | How should existing z/OS programs and data be represented to API consumers? |
| IBM API Connect | Manage API definitions, products, catalogs, publication, consumers, subscriptions, and lifecycle. | How will APIs be governed, published, versioned, and consumed across the enterprise? |
| IBM DataPower Gateway | Process and route runtime requests and enforce gateway security and policy. | Where and how should requests be checked before reaching backend services? |
The distinction matters because the names are similar, but the roles are not interchangeable. As Gulla puts it, “Think of z/OS Connect as the API provider on z/OS and API Connect as the enterprise API management platform.”

How does a request travel from a consumer to a z/OS system?
In the integrated pattern, a consumer calls an API endpoint governed through API Connect. A DataPower gateway processes the incoming request, applies configured controls, and routes it to z/OS Connect. z/OS Connect then invokes the relevant backend resource, such as a CICS program, IMS transaction, or Db2 service.
- Consumer: An application sends a request to the published API endpoint. Depending on the API’s security design, the client may first obtain and present a token.
- API Connect: The API’s definition and publication are managed through API Connect; it can associate managed gateways with APIs and propagate published configuration.
- DataPower Gateway: At runtime, the gateway can validate credentials or tokens, enforce configured policies, and route the request onward.
- z/OS Connect: The z/OS-side API provider maps the request to the backend interface and invokes the target resource.
- Backend: The existing application or data service performs its work, and the response returns along the configured path to the consumer.
This describes responsibility boundaries, not a required topology for every installation. The precise endpoint, network path, security arrangement, and gateway configuration depend on the deployment.

How are the API definitions created and published?
The walkthrough describes a product handoff based on an API definition. First, a developer creates an API project in z/OS Connect and exports its OpenAPI document. The team imports that document into API Connect, organizes the API into a product and plan, and publishes it to a catalog so consumers can discover it and request access or subscriptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Create or configure the API in z/OS Connect to represent the selected z/OS resource.
- Export its OpenAPI definition.
- Import the definition into API Connect and prepare the API for management.
- Group the API into a product and its plans, then publish it to the appropriate catalog and developer portal.
- Configure the managed gateway path and consumer access according to the organization’s policies.
API Connect’s management role can include catalogs and environments, product packaging, developer-portal access, OAuth support, JWT validation, API keys, rate limits, analytics, version management, consumer onboarding, and subscription management. Which capabilities are used, and how they are configured, is a deployment decision rather than an assumption that every API uses every feature.

What artifacts make up a z/OS Connect API?
The article groups development outputs into three categories. Their exact contents and deployment requirements should be checked against the IBM documentation for the product version in use.
| Artifact | Purpose described in the walkthrough |
|---|---|
| Service Archive (SAR) | Describes how z/OS Connect calls a backend resource such as CICS, IMS, Db2, or Java. |
| API project | Contains API definitions and related materials such as OpenAPI, YAML, JSON Schema, and mapping definitions. |
| API requester WAR | Packages a generated requester that is deployed to Liberty. |
The article says API metadata is generally stored as files deployed to the runtime filesystem; it does not describe a DBMS repository as a requirement for API definitions. That is a description of the walkthrough, not a substitute for checking requirements for a specific product release or configuration.

What does the CICS example look like?
In the illustrative flow, a developer examines an existing COBOL program and its COMMAREA, generates a service definition, creates an OpenAPI definition, and maps JSON fields to the COMMAREA. The API is then packaged and deployed, with an endpoint such as GET /customers/127643 representing a customer lookup. The important architectural point is that the REST interface and mapping can sit in front of the existing transaction; the example does not establish a one-size-fits-all recipe for every CICS program.
Where does each product run?
z/OS Connect
The walkthrough describes z/OS Connect as running on z/OS with WebSphere Liberty, alongside backend environments such as CICS and IMS and security infrastructure such as Security Server/RACF. Use current IBM product documentation to confirm supported versions, prerequisites, and deployment details for a real implementation.

API Connect
API Connect supplies the API management and publication functions. In the integrated pattern, it can be associated with managed DataPower gateways, while DataPower handles runtime traffic. The exact division of management and runtime components depends on the selected product versions and topology.
DataPower Gateway
The overview lists physical appliance, virtual appliance, Docker container, OpenShift/Kubernetes workload, and cloud-based deployment as possible DataPower forms. It also describes administration through a web GUI, CLI, REST management interfaces, automation pipelines, GitOps, and OpenShift Operators. Treat these as options presented by the article, not a guarantee that every option is supported for every release, license, or environment; verify the current IBM support and licensing terms before selecting one.
What workstation and tools are needed for development?
The development workstation is a place to edit and manage API assets; it is not the z/OS runtime. The article says development can take place on Windows, Linux, or macOS and mentions Visual Studio Code with IBM tooling, Eclipse-based tooling, and Git plus YAML/OpenAPI editors.

Its laptop guidance of 16 GB of RAM is a general recommendation, not an official minimum specification or a measured performance threshold. Actual workstation needs depend on the tools and local workloads a team chooses. Runtime, integration, access, and security prerequisites are separate matters to establish with the platform team and current IBM documentation.
How should an organization choose the boundaries?
- Start with the backend contract: identify the CICS program, IMS transaction or database, Db2 resource, batch application, or Java service to expose, along with the interface it already accepts.
- Use z/OS Connect for the z/OS-facing API work: define how requests and responses map to the existing resource, or how a z/OS application will call an external API.
- Use API Connect for enterprise API management: decide how APIs will be cataloged, packaged, published, versioned, and offered to consumers.
- Use DataPower for runtime gateway controls: determine where routing, authentication or token checks, authorization, rate limits, audit logging, and protocol mediation belong.
- Confirm the actual product combination: versions, supported deployment forms, prerequisites, and licensing are not established by a trade-publication overview and need confirmation in current IBM documentation.
DataPower can also operate without API Connect in a simpler client-to-gateway-to-backend arrangement, according to the article. That is a different management model from the integrated publication flow, so teams should decide deliberately which API lifecycle and consumer-management capabilities they need.
