How to Build an Android App with an AI Coding Agent and Run It on an Emulator

A practical workflow for prompting an AI coding agent, reviewing its edits, running an Android app on an emulator, and checking behavior and logs.

You can use an AI coding agent to create a small Android app, then build, install and test it in an emulator. The most reviewable route is Android Studio: describe a bounded first version, inspect the agent’s plan and edits, run the project on an Android Virtual Device (AVD), and verify the app on screen and in Logcat. Google AI Studio offers a browser-based alternative for quick prototypes, with narrower project and device support.

Choose a workflow: Android Studio or Google AI Studio

Use Android Studio if you want a local project with an installed SDK, a configurable emulator and integrated build and debugging tools. Its Gemini Agent Mode is documented for multi-stage project tasks and can work with project tools to edit, build, deploy and inspect a running app. You review and approve the agent’s changes; agent assistance does not remove the need to check the code and behavior. See Android Studio Agent Mode (updated July 14, 2026).

Google AI Studio is an option when you want to start in a browser without installing Android Studio, the SDK or a local emulator. Its Android Build mode generates a Kotlin and Jetpack Compose project and previews it in a cloud emulator. That convenience comes with documented limits on project structure and supported device features, covered below. See Build Android apps in Google AI Studio (updated August 18, 2026).

What matters Android Studio Google AI Studio
Setup Local IDE, Android SDK and AVD. Browser-based build and cloud emulator; no local SDK, Android Studio or emulator needed for this route.
Project scope Work in a regular Android Studio project. Documented output is a client-side, single-activity, single-module Kotlin/Compose app; no server-side runtime.
Agent workflow Gemini Agent Mode; a separate external-agent integration is described as a Canary preview. Prompt-and-chat project generation in Android Build mode.
Verification Configurable local virtual devices and Android Studio tools; use physical hardware when the emulator cannot represent a required feature reliably. Cloud preview, with explicit hardware and Google Play services gaps; location is simulated.
Project export Local project workflow. Android project download is ZIP-only; GitHub export is unavailable on the cited documentation page.

These are workflow differences, not evidence that one agent produces better code. Android Developers also described a Bring Your Own Agent integration for Codex, Claude Agent and Antigravity in Android Studio Canary in September 2026. It is a preview, not a general release guarantee; check the current release-channel availability before planning around it. Android Developers Blog: Build your way.

Define a first build the agent can finish and you can test

Start with one screen and one main user action rather than asking for a complete product. State the app’s purpose, what the first screen should show, the action a user takes, the expected states, and any constraints. Ask the agent to outline its plan and name the files it expects to change before it edits them.

Example: a tiny task tracker

A useful first request could be: “Make a simple task tracker in this project. Show an empty state when there are no tasks. Let me add a task and mark it complete. Use local sample data only; do not add accounts, a network service or extra screens. Explain your plan and list the files you expect to change before editing.”

This request gives you visible behaviors to check: the initial empty state, adding a task, and completing it. If the agent proposes a broader architecture or features beyond the request, narrow the scope before approving edits. Review its changes as it proceeds rather than treating generated code as trusted merely because it builds.

Create an AVD and run the app locally

An Android Virtual Device is a configured virtual phone, tablet or other device profile paired with an Android version. The Android Emulator runs that configuration on your computer. As Android Developers documentation puts it, “The Android Emulator simulates Android devices on your computer so that you can test your application on a variety of devices and Android API levels without needing to have each physical device.” An AVD is one test configuration, not a guarantee that every device behaves identically.

  1. Create a virtual device: In Android Studio, open Device Manager and create an AVD using a device profile and Android version relevant to your first test.
  2. Select the test target: Open the toolbar’s target-device menu and select the AVD you created.
  3. Build, install and launch: Click Run. Android Studio builds the app, installs it on the selected emulator and launches it. On a first launch, the emulator may take about a minute to start; later launches can use a saved snapshot.
  4. Check the app: Exercise the first-version actions on the emulator, not just the launch screen. For the task tracker, try the empty state, add a task and mark it complete.

The Android Emulator documentation lists 16 GB of RAM and 16 GB of disk space for the best experience; the opened page does not show a publication date. These are recommendations for that experience, not proof that a machine below either figure cannot run an emulator. Higher API levels and larger virtual screens can require more resources. If the emulator runs poorly, Android Developers suggests considering a physical device. See Run apps on the Android Emulator.

Iterate: request one change, inspect it, then test again

Once the first build runs, use a short feedback loop. Ask for one meaningful change at a time so you can connect the resulting edits to a visible outcome. Android Studio Agent Mode documents capabilities including building and deploying, inspecting the app display and screenshots, checking Logcat, and using adb shell input. Available tools can vary by workflow and installed version; do not assume a third-party agent has the same access.

  1. Describe one change and its expected result. For example, ask to keep completed tasks visible but visually distinct.
  2. Review the proposed edits or diff. Check that the change is relevant and does not quietly add unrelated behavior.
  3. Build and deploy. Use Run for a clean build and launch. For eligible incremental edits, Apply Changes can shorten the update cycle.
  4. Verify both behavior and diagnostics. Look at the running screen, perform the interaction, and inspect Logcat for runtime errors. A successful build only establishes that the project compiled; it does not establish that the user flow works as intended.

Android Studio’s Apply Changes is available for debug APKs deployed to Android 8.0 (API level 26) or higher, according to the Build and run your app guide. It can apply some code and resource edits without restarting the app or current activity. Use Run for initial deployment or when you need a clean launch. Compose Live Edit is described separately as experimental in that guide.

When an emulator is not enough

A local AVD is useful for trying different virtual device profiles and Android API levels, but it is not a complete substitute for physical-device checks. Add another AVD when you need to check a different screen size or Android version. Use a real device when a feature or service cannot be represented reliably in the emulator or when your test depends on hardware behavior.

This distinction matters especially with Google AI Studio’s cloud emulator. Its documentation lists camera/photo capture, NFC, Bluetooth and Google Play services as unsupported; location is simulated. Do not treat a successful browser preview as verification of those capabilities. The documentation also describes installing to a physical device through Chrome or Edge with WebUSB support, with Developer Options and USB debugging enabled and a USB connection.

Build and preview in Google AI Studio instead

For a browser-first prototype, open Google AI Studio’s Build mode, select Android, describe the app and let the agent generate and launch it in the cloud emulator. The emulator streams in the browser and automatically refreshes after agent changes, so you can preview without setting up a local SDK or AVD.

As documented on August 18, 2026, the Android generator is limited to client-side projects with one activity and one module, written in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose. Java/XML layouts, native C/C++, Wear OS and Android TV are not supported, and the project has no server-side runtime. Download is ZIP-only on the cited page; GitHub export is not available there. These constraints make AI Studio useful for a constrained prototype, but not a documented replacement for every Android Studio project workflow.
