Build your AI stack around clear boundaries between your application logic, model access, tools, data, and runtime. That way, you can replace a provider or component without automatically rewriting unrelated parts—but no gateway or standard makes every feature interchangeable at zero cost. Start by deciding what you may need to change, then add only the interfaces that make those changes practical.
What should “replaceable” mean for your AI stack?
Before choosing a framework or provider, name the part you want to be able to change. “Portability” might mean switching model providers, moving inference to another hosting location, changing an agent framework, replacing a tool integration, or doing several of these. Each goal calls for different boundaries and tests.

Map the main components: user interface, application or agent logic, tools, memory and data, model, model runtime, and application runtime. Google Cloud’s architecture guidance treats these as distinct choices, not a single all-or-nothing stack. Its component guidance also frames modularity as a trade-off: boundaries can help with evaluation, security, and cost control, but they add work and operational complexity.
Separate components when the boundary earns its keep
Decoupling can make independent upgrades and more granular operational controls possible. Google Cloud’s Well-Architected Framework describes a loosely coupled architecture as one where application functions can run independently of their dependencies. That is a design aim, not a promise that replacing a dependency requires no adaptation. Add a boundary when it supports a real need such as independent upgrades, security controls, reliability, monitoring, or cost and performance management.

How do you make model access replaceable?
Keep provider-specific details out of unrelated application logic. Put model selection and routing behind a defined internal interface when you have a concrete reason—such as multiple models, fallback, governance, or an expected provider change. The application should call that interface; the adapter or gateway should handle provider-specific request and response details.
Choose an access approach deliberately
There is no universally best way to connect. Official SDKs can expose provider-specific features conveniently, while direct REST or gRPC APIs give you more control over requests and dependencies. Compatibility layers can ease portability when both sides support the interface, but may not expose every provider capability or preserve identical behavior.

Google AI for Developers discusses SDK, API, and library integration trade-offs in its partner and library integrations guide. The guide is scoped to partner integrations; Google directs end-user application builders to its general Gemini API getting-started path rather than treating the partner guide as universal application advice. Evaluate the options for your own application by feature access, portability, dependency and version control, implementation effort, and how much provider-specific behavior reaches your application code.
Use a gateway only for a real routing or governance need
A unified inference endpoint can centralize routing, API management, guardrail checkpoints, and model selection. Google Cloud documents an architecture that routes OpenAI-compatible requests to model backends hosted across providers or on-premises. The condition matters: transparent operation is limited to backends compatible with the interface used. A common endpoint does not make every provider-specific field, capability, error, or response behave identically.

Before adopting an abstraction, list the provider features your product actually uses: model identifiers, request fields, response parsing, tool schemas, and error handling. Test those dependencies against the proposed interface. If the abstraction hides a feature you need or adds a service whose operations outweigh the replacement benefit, keep the boundary narrower.
How should tools, data, and runtimes fit?
Give tools explicit interfaces and permissions
Keep tool implementations behind defined interfaces rather than embedding their details throughout agent logic. Model each integration’s capabilities, authorization, failure behavior, and security requirements. MCP is an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems; Google Cloud describes it as separating an agent’s core reasoning from the specific implementation of its tools, like a standard hardware port for peripherals. A protocol boundary can make implementations easier to change, but it does not replace capability, authorization, reliability, or security review.

Keep framework and runtime choices distinct from model choice
A model change need not require an agent-framework rewrite, and a framework change need not require a model change, if those responsibilities have explicit boundaries. Treat the model, model runtime, framework, tool layer, and application runtime as separate decisions where your operational needs justify it. Avoid treating a change in one as an automatic reason to replace all the others.

How can you tell whether the design is portable enough?
Use the application’s own evaluations rather than assuming that an interface guarantees equivalent results. Compare candidate arrangements on feature coverage, performance, cost, security, operational burden, and migration effort. The architecture guidance supports modular design principles; it does not establish head-to-head benchmark results or a universal migration-cost figure.

- Write down what “replaceable” means: provider, hosting location, framework, tool implementation, or a combination.
- Identify provider-specific model IDs, request fields, response parsing, tool schemas, and error handling present in application code.
- Record the provider-specific capabilities the product depends on, then test those capabilities before switching.
- Define tool and data interfaces, including the permissions each integration receives; assess whether MCP fits the use case.
- Compare alternatives with evaluations based on your workload, including the features your users rely on.
- Track the cost of the boundary itself: services to operate, security review, evaluation coverage, and changes needed during migration.
A modular design makes change more contained when its boundaries match real responsibilities. It cannot remove the need to verify behavior, adapt provider-specific features, or operate any added gateway or integration layer.
