How to Build an AI App That Can Switch Providers Without a Rewrite

A small internal interface and provider-specific adapters can make AI provider changes practical—provided you test the capabilities and behavior of every route.

Put a small, application-owned interface between your app’s business logic and each AI provider. Implement provider-specific adapters behind that interface for request and response mapping, authentication, streaming, tools, structured output, and errors. This makes provider changes manageable—not seamless: supported features and behavior still differ, so test every provider and model route you plan to use.

What provider portability can—and cannot—do

An internal contract lets business logic ask for the model behavior it needs without depending directly on a vendor’s SDK types. An adapter translates that request into a provider’s API format and converts the reply back into types your application understands.

The boundary does not make provider APIs equivalent. Google says its OpenAI-compatible interface supports a route for certain workflows, but its schema does not map one-to-one to Gemini; some features need native APIs or extra handling. OpenAI’s Agents SDK likewise warns that providers vary in their support for tools, multimodal input, structured output, and streaming. Google’s OpenAI compatibility guide and the OpenAI Agents SDK model documentation describe these limitations.

Design a small internal contract

Define request and result types around the operations your application actually uses. Keep them independent of provider SDK objects, and avoid turning the interface into a copy of every vendor API.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Normalize the common path

A request might represent messages, the requested output mode, tool definitions, and a limited set of generation options. A result might represent text or structured content, tool-call intents, completion status, usage when available, and provider/model identity. Include only fields your application needs across its normal workflow.

Make capability limits explicit

Have each adapter report whether it supports the operations your app requests, such as streaming, tools, structured output, image or audio input, or embeddings. If a request is unsupported, reject it clearly or apply an intentional, documented fallback. Do not silently discard an option or imply that a feature is portable when it is not.

For a feature that is specific to one provider, use a clearly named extension point or send that operation through a native adapter. Google recommends direct integration when full Gemini feature access is required; its compatibility route is for supported workflows, not a guarantee of feature parity. See Google’s compatibility guidance.

Keep provider-specific work inside adapters

  • Selection and configuration: Resolve provider and model from deployment configuration or a controlled routing policy, rather than scattering vendor identifiers across business logic.
  • Request and response mapping: Translate message shapes, options, tool schemas, results, and stream events. Preserve distinctions the application needs, including completion and error states.
  • Tool execution: Convert a provider’s tool call into a normalized intent, validate its arguments, and execute it under application authorization. Return a normalized result to the adapter.
  • Errors and observability: Map common failures into useful internal categories while retaining provider-specific diagnostics in logs. Record provider and model identity, along with usage metadata when the route supplies it; do not assume every provider reports the same fields.

Application-owned tools are a particularly useful seam. In Anthropic’s documented client-tool flow, the application supplies tool schemas, executes requested tools, and sends results back. Anthropic-hosted server tools follow a different execution and usage path, so treat them as provider-specific rather than as interchangeable with application-owned tools. See Anthropic’s tool-use overview.

Choose an integration route for the capabilities you need

Integration route Good fit Trade-off
Provider’s official SDK An end-user application that needs provider features and SDK helpers. Google recommends its GenAI SDK for Gemini end-user applications. SDK dependencies, versioning, and provider-specific concepts remain part of the implementation.
Direct REST or gRPC A framework, gateway, or integration layer that needs precise dependency control or access to provider API features. You handle more request validation, typing, and authentication work yourself.
OpenAI-compatible endpoint An existing OpenAI-client workflow using features supported by the compatibility layer. For supported Gemini workflows, Google says the change can be as simple as changing the base URL and key. Translation differences and a feature ceiling remain; some native Gemini capabilities need another route.
Multi-provider SDK or adapter layer Your required providers or routing needs are not covered by built-in integration points. This adds another compatibility layer, and semantics depend on the adapter and backend. OpenAI describes its Any-LLM and LiteLLM integrations as best-effort beta integrations in the reviewed SDK documentation.

Google compares its SDK, direct API, and OpenAI-compatible options in its Gemini API library and integration guidance. Its practical warning is: “If you need a significant amount of special-casing, it may be more value to use a dedicated SDK or API for each platform.”

Build the boundary in stages

  1. Inventory real usage. List the operations in the app: text generation, streaming, tool use, constrained output, images or audio, embeddings, and provider-hosted tools. Record which are essential and which are optional.
  2. Define internal request and result types. Base them on that inventory. Keep vendor SDK objects out of business logic and persisted application formats.
  3. Wrap the current provider first. Implement it behind the adapter before adding another provider. This establishes a real boundary without requiring a speculative universal API.
  4. Add the next provider deliberately. For each required capability, mark it as supported, mapped with limitations, or unsupported. Choose a native SDK or API when a compatibility layer cannot preserve required behavior.
  5. Test each provider and model route. Contract tests should cover message mapping, tool-call arguments and results, stream events and completion, structured-output validation, usage fields, and provider-specific failures. OpenAI notes that some providers do not support JSON-schema output and that incremental tool-call deltas can be unreliable on some compatible routes. See the Agents SDK model documentation.
  6. Roll out changes with a rollback path. Select the model explicitly in production configuration, monitor the actual route, and retain a way to restore the previous provider or model. OpenAI recommends explicit model selection rather than relying on an SDK default; see its model documentation.

What to verify before switching traffic

  • Required features are supported on the exact provider, API route, and model—not merely advertised by a compatibility label.
  • Tool arguments are parsed and validated, and tool results return to the model in the expected format.
  • Streaming clients handle the provider’s event sequence, completion signals, and error behavior.
  • Structured responses are validated by the application, including on routes without JSON-schema support.
  • Logging distinguishes provider and model, and handles usage fields that may be absent or differ by route.
  • Provider-specific features have an explicit path rather than being silently dropped by the shared interface.
