A browser-based converter can process media without uploading it to your server: ffmpeg.wasm runs FFmpeg through WebAssembly, with transcoding offloaded to a web worker by default. But the available evidence does not establish that a particular converter successfully processed a 1.5 GB video, how long it took, or where that implementation failed. This guide explains the architecture and the measurements needed to make that case study reproducible, without inventing a result.
What “zero-server” means for a browser converter
In a zero-server conversion flow, the user’s media is processed on their device rather than sent to a server for transcoding. The ffmpeg.wasm project overview describes the project as a WebAssembly and JavaScript port of FFmpeg for recording, converting, and streaming media in browsers. Its documented workflow uses a worker by default: the worker initializes the WebAssembly core, the input is placed in the core’s virtual filesystem, and the converted result is read back from that filesystem.

“Zero-server” therefore describes where the media-processing work happens; it does not, by itself, establish that every part of an application is serverless. An app may still need to deliver its page and core assets. The overview also explains why the work is moved off the page’s main thread: transcoding is resource-intensive, and running it there would interfere with the interface.

- Load the converter. The application initializes the ffmpeg.wasm core in a worker. The project provides distinct single-thread and multi-thread cores; the latter creates additional workers, according to its overview.
- Place the input in the core filesystem. The browser-side application must make the selected media available to the core before invoking a conversion.
- Run the requested operation. Record whether the job re-encodes the media or only changes its container through remuxing. Those operations are not equivalent workloads, so a file-size result without the operation and codecs is difficult to interpret.
- Read the output back. The resulting file is read from the core filesystem and made available to the user. The input, output, and encoder’s working data can all contribute to memory demand during processing; a technical guide on video transcoding with ffmpeg.wasm describes this practical constraint.
Single-thread and multi-thread cores are a trade-off
The project’s FAQ says its multi-thread version can be around twice as fast as single-thread mode, while using substantially more CPU and memory. That is qualified project guidance, not a benchmark for a particular converter, file, device, or browser.

| Core mode | Speed guidance | Resource cost | What to establish in a project test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-thread | The FAQ gives no comparable speed figure for this mode. | Lower CPU and memory use than the multi-thread option, according to the FAQ. | Measure the specific conversion on the target device and browser. |
| Multi-thread | The FAQ describes performance as potentially around 2× single-thread. | Substantially more CPU and memory, according to the FAQ. | Measure speed and memory on the same device, browser, input, and operation as the single-thread run. |
The FAQ also documents a 2 GB WebAssembly limit. Treat that as a runtime constraint described by the project, not as a universal browser file-size ceiling or proof that a 1.5 GB input will convert successfully. A conversion can need room for more than the input alone, and practical capacity may be lower on phones than desktops, as the secondary technical guide notes.
What a credible 1.5 GB case study must report
A statement that a converter “digests 1.5 GB videos” is meaningful only alongside the conditions of the run. File size alone does not identify the codec, conversion workload, device capacity, or whether the result completed. For a reproducible account, report:

- The browser name and version, device or operating system, and available memory if known.
- The exact input file size, container, and video and audio codecs; include output container and codecs.
- Whether the task re-encoded streams or only remuxed them.
- The ffmpeg.wasm and core versions, selected core mode, and worker configuration.
- Elapsed time and peak memory, if measured. Label estimates as estimates and omit measurements that were not taken.
- The first observed failure symptom and the stage at which it occurred: initialization, input loading, conversion, or output retrieval.
Without those details, neither success nor failure can be attributed reliably to file size. The available project documentation does not establish any particular 1.5 GB test result or identify where an author’s implementation broke.
How to compare modes without overclaiming
Run both modes against the same source file and operation on the same browser and device. Record the setup and outcome for each run, including whether it completed, elapsed time, CPU or memory observations, and any failure symptom. If a mode could not be run under the tested browser configuration, report that compatibility condition rather than treating it as a universal property of the core.

This comparison matters because the faster mode may consume more resources. A desktop result does not establish that the same file will work on a phone, and the FAQ’s “around 2x” guidance is not a promise for an individual job. Keep results tied to the tested input and setup.
Where the design is most likely to strain
- Input and output coexist: the converter may need memory for the source, generated output, and processing work data. Large inputs can therefore create pressure beyond their nominal file size.
- More workers cost more: multi-thread mode can improve speed, but the project warns of higher CPU and memory use.
- Device capacity varies: a phone can have less practical headroom than a desktop; there is no single file-size threshold established here for all browsers and devices.
- A stalled interface is a different symptom from a failed conversion: worker execution is intended to keep intensive transcoding off the main thread, but a case report still needs to say whether the interface remained responsive and what actually failed.
For an incident report, distinguish a memory-related failure from a codec or format error, a worker initialization problem, and an output retrieval problem. Record the observed error or behavior rather than diagnosing from file size alone.

What can be concluded—and what cannot
ffmpeg.wasm offers a documented browser-side architecture for media processing, with work offloaded to a worker and separate single- and multi-thread cores. Its FAQ describes a possible speed advantage for multi-thread mode alongside increased resource use, and documents a WebAssembly limit. These facts explain why a 1.5 GB conversion is a useful stress case, but they do not verify a particular converter’s success, duration, peak memory, or failure point. Those conclusions require the run-specific details above.
