Before you schedule anything, verify the game’s streaming and commercial-use terms and clear music and other third-party material. YouTube archiving, copyright checks, and monetization are conditional—not guaranteed.
1. Check rights and prepare the recording
Being the person who recorded a VOD does not automatically give you every right needed to broadcast it publicly. Check the game publisher’s current streaming and commercial-use terms for the specific title. Review the recording for licensed music, overlays, guest content, and other third-party material, and confirm that your permissions cover a livestream rerun.
YouTube’s livestream terms make creators responsible for the rights needed to use material in a stream, including music. YouTube’s live copyright system can detect third-party matches and interrupt or terminate a stream. Even where you have a license, a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Keep permission and license records, but do not treat them as a guarantee against a claim: archived streams may receive Content ID claims after the live event ends. 2. Schedule the rerun in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live. Open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. You can create a new stream or reuse settings from a previous one; check the details before scheduling. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the setup flow.
- Enter the stream URL and key in your encoder. The encoder sends the recording as a live feed to YouTube. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or expose it in a recording or public post. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set the scheduled stream’s title and details. Identify the game, episode or event, and make clear that it is a rerun. YouTube may show a scheduled stream as upcoming so viewers can choose Notify me.
- Start the encoder when the scheduled stream is ready. YouTube’s setup guidance describes starting the encoder after entering the stream URL and key. Confirm the feed is reaching Live Control Room before relying on the scheduled start.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so do not use an over-12-hour rerun as the only way to preserve an episode. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording backup; save the source VOD independently rather than relying on the online archive alone. Read YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

3. Turn each rerun into a useful archive
After the stream, review its visibility and metadata in YouTube Studio. YouTube says the archive is uploaded by default; making an archive public can help increase the reach of future streams. Group related episodes and highlight clips into playlists, with accurate titles that distinguish an episode or event and label it as a rerun. Tags are not a primary growth strategy: YouTube says they have minimal discovery impact in most cases, apart from helping with common misspellings. 4. Make the rerun distinct—and treat monetization as conditional
Permission to show a game and eligibility to earn money from that footage are separate questions. YouTube says game monetization depends on the commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. Its guidance warns: “Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time may not be accepted for monetization.” It describes qualifying commentary as step-by-step, tied to the action, and instructional or educational. Do not assume that owning the recording or streaming it live makes it monetizable. Check YouTube’s video game and software content guidance and the relevant publisher terms.

YouTube also reviews monetization at the channel level. Its reused-content policy concerns material republished without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. In July 2025 YouTube renamed its repetitious-content policy “inauthentic content,” clarifying how it treats repetitive or mass-produced content; YouTube said the update did not change the reused-content policy. Copyright compliance and reused-content eligibility are distinct: passing one does not establish the other. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
If your channel is eligible and monetization is enabled, YouTube documents features including ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships for some channels. 5. Use Live Redirect when it fits the schedule
Live Redirect can send viewers at the end of one stream to a Premiere or another live stream. The sending channel must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Sending viewers to another channel also requires that channel’s permission. Check the current Live Redirect eligibility and setup rules before building a handoff into your schedule.
Choose the setup that fits your source and archive needs
- PC gameplay: If you already have a PC and encoder workflow, schedule the recording from that setup. Keep a local archive and confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room.
- Console gameplay: Your source and existing equipment determine whether you can send a recording to an encoder directly or need an intermediate capture workflow. The right hardware cannot be specified without knowing your console, setup, and budget; YouTube’s cited workflow does not establish that every creator needs to buy a dedicated PC or capture card.
- Any source: Rights clearance, local backup, and meaningful original value matter more to the channel’s long-term viability than whether the source is a PC or console. Avoid investing in hardware until you know what your existing setup can do.
Troubleshooting common rerun problems
- The encoder does not connect: Check that you copied the stream URL and the key for the scheduled stream, that the key has not been replaced, and that the encoder is sending to the scheduled event. Keep the key private; replace it if it may have been exposed.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, and streams longer than that may not be captured. Use the local recording as your fallback.
- The stream is interrupted or terminated: A third-party copyright match can trigger YouTube’s live copyright system. Review the VOD’s music and other material, confirm your license covers live use, and resolve any rights-holder allowlisting requirements where applicable. A license does not guarantee an archive will avoid later claims.
- The archive is not reaching viewers: Check visibility, title accuracy, and playlist placement in YouTube Studio. Tags are of limited discovery value in most cases; they are not a substitute for a clear episode identity.
- The channel is not accepted for monetization: Recheck publisher commercial-use terms and assess whether the channel adds substantial original commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole; live playback alone does not establish eligibility.
- Live Redirect is unavailable: Confirm the sending channel meets the subscriber and strike requirements, and obtain permission before redirecting to another channel.
