What a 24/7 YouTube stream actually needs
In a VPS setup, the server sends a continuous feed to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube then transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. The VPS is not serving the audience’s viewing copies directly, so an India-based audience alone does not make an India-based encoder technically necessary. Choose a server region for a reliable route to YouTube’s ingest endpoint and convenient administration, and test the actual connection rather than assuming geography guarantees performance. The workload depends on what the server does. Relaying pre-encoded media is different from encoding video in real time: encoding needs sustained CPU capacity. Amazon says Lightsail is suited to fixed-bundle VPS use, while its FAQ recommends considering EC2 for highly configurable environments and consistently high CPU performance, including video encoding. No server performance test establishes that a particular plan will handle your stream.
Start with YouTube’s ingest settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Its published H.264 table, for example, lists 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are reference values from YouTube’s guidance, not universal minimums for every meditation stream; check the current table and the settings you actually use before sizing a server. - Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube specifies a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Video and audio: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Check encoder support and the current platform guidance for your chosen configuration.
- Stream key: Use the stream key configured for the YouTube live stream as the encoder’s ingest credential. Treat it as private; anyone with access may be able to send video to that stream.
Estimate continuous transfer before choosing a VPS
A continuous stream uploads data for as long as it runs. As a rough planning calculation, bitrate in megabits per second × 0.45 gives decimal gigabytes per hour, before protocol overhead. At 4 Mbps, that is about 1.8 GB per hour, or roughly 1,296 GB over 30 days of uninterrupted streaming. Allow extra headroom and verify whether the provider counts inbound and outbound traffic, how it treats overages, and whether the allowance changes by region. This calculation estimates data volume; it does not establish a provider’s billing total.

For an India-based setup, check the regional details carefully: AWS states that Mumbai Lightsail plans include half the general transfer allowances. Its FAQ says both inbound and outbound instance transfer count toward the allowance; excess outbound transfer may incur charges. A 24/7 stream makes sustained transfer and recovery more important than a bundle’s headline storage figure. Compare the bitrate-derived monthly transfer estimate with the region-specific allowance, leave headroom, and include any excess-transfer charges, storage, IP, taxes, and other costs in your budget. If encoding in real time, also verify CPU headroom under your intended codec, resolution, and frame rate; the published bundle specifications do not promise encoding performance.

Keep a self-managed stream recoverable
A VPS is only dependable as a continuous channel if the full chain can recover from failures. Before relying on it, establish how your encoder or relay starts after a reboot, restarts after a process or network failure, and reports loss of YouTube ingest. Monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as the server process: a running process does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. Google Cloud’s documented 24-hour Live Stream API session limit also illustrates why a managed service’s session rules and restart behavior must be checked rather than assumed.
Choose the setup that fits your workflow
- Choose a VPS if you want control over the operating system and stream pipeline, and you can size compute and transfer, apply updates, monitor the process, and manage recovery.
- Consider a managed encoding pipeline if you need its encoding workflow, but account for service quotas, session limits, restart handling, and usage-based charges.
