You can build a website with ChatGPT Sites by describing what it should do, providing the content and references it should use, reviewing the generated preview, and refining it before publication. Sites combines prompt-based creation with preview, hosting and publishing; it does not guarantee a finished professional site from one prompt. Access and publishing controls vary by plan and workspace.

What you need to know before building a website with ChatGPT

ChatGPT Sites is a prompt-based option for creating a site without starting by writing HTML and CSS. You describe the goal and provide materials; ChatGPT generates a preview that you can ask it to revise. If you publish through Sites, it also provides hosting and a deployment URL.

Sites is described as a public beta for ChatGPT workspaces, Plus and Pro, but availability can depend on rollout and workspace settings. Open ChatGPT Work on the web, or Work/Codex in the desktop app, and check whether Sites is available. It is not available in the ChatGPT Classic app. If you use a managed workspace and cannot find the feature, ask its administrator whether access or publishing is restricted. Public publishing may be disabled by workspace policy; Enterprise public publishing must be enabled by an administrator. Confirm which audience and publishing options your account actually offers before you plan around a public launch.

Step 1: Prepare a useful website brief

A specific brief gives ChatGPT a clearer target and reduces guesswork. Decide what the website is for and who will use it. Gather the copy, files, links, data and visual references you want it to use, and identify any constraints, such as content to exclude or an interaction the site should support.

Include the word “website” in your request or mention @Sites. For a useful first prompt, specify:

  • The purpose of the site and its intended audience.
  • The pages or sections you want, such as a home page, services, contact information or an FAQ.
  • The supplied text and files to use, plus any links, data or design references.
  • The tone, visual direction and desired interactions.
  • What the site must not include, such as unsupported claims or confidential details.

This is a practical briefing checklist, not a required prompt formula. OpenAI’s guidance is to describe the goal and provide the inputs Sites should use. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Sites creation guide and ChatGPT Sites overview

Step 2: Ask ChatGPT to create the site

  1. Open ChatGPT Work on the web, or Work/Codex in the desktop app, and choose Sites if it is available.
  2. Submit your brief and the relevant materials. You can ask for the site to be built directly in the request.
  3. Open the in-app preview and review the generated site before publishing. ChatGPT Sites supports testing the site and requesting changes to its layout, content or features.

The first version is a draft to inspect, not proof that every detail is correct. Check that the generated pages reflect your brief and that important information has not been omitted or invented. ChatGPT Sites: build sites and apps with ChatGPT

Step 3: Refine the preview and check the result

Make revision requests concrete. Instead of “make it better,” identify the section and the change you want—for example, ask to simplify the navigation, make the contact information easier to find, or revise a paragraph using the supplied wording. Then inspect the updated preview and its behavior.

  • Verify names, dates, claims, prices and other factual details against the materials you supplied.
  • Check the layout at the sizes and on the devices relevant to your audience.
  • Follow links and test interactions you expect visitors to use.
  • Remove confidential information and material you do not have permission to publish.
  • Review the whole site again after revisions, since a change in one area may affect another.

Step 4: Choose an audience and publish deliberately

When the preview is ready, choose the audience offered in your workspace, such as workspace-only or public where enabled. Check the audience setting before deployment; a public site is not appropriate for content intended only for colleagues or clients.

OpenAI warns: “Every deployment URL is a production URL.” Treat deployment as making a live site, not as another private preview. Save a version and deploy only after your review if you do not want review changes to update the live Site. Workspace administrators can control publishing options. Step 5: Decide whether to connect a custom domain

A custom domain is optional. ChatGPT Sites does not register one for you: you need to own the domain and have permission to change its DNS records. Where the feature is supported, follow the records Sites provides and enter them with your domain provider. Availability varies by workspace; OpenAI’s current guide says Enterprise workspaces do not have custom domains at launch. Check the guide and your workspace before choosing a domain-based launch plan. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Sites custom-domain guidance

Privacy, permissions and connected apps

Only provide content you have permission to use, and review the published site for confidential material. Data controls vary by plan: OpenAI says Business and Enterprise/Edu conversations and Site information are not used for model training by default. For Free, Go, Plus and Pro, conversations may be used if “Improve the model for everyone” is enabled. Check your account’s data controls before submitting sensitive material. There is also an advanced workspace option for Business and Enterprise users: Sites can use supported connected apps when the workspace permits access. Each visitor uses their own connected account and existing permissions, and administrators control which supported apps Sites may use. This is not required to create a basic website. ChatGPT Sites or a code-based website?

Choose based on whether you value a guided, prompt-based workflow or direct control over the code and hosting. This comparison reflects the documented workflows, not a hands-on ranking.

Consideration ChatGPT Sites Code-based route
How you create Describe the site and revise a generated preview through conversation. Learn and write web code; MDN’s beginner path introduces planning, HTML and CSS.
Hosting and publishing Hosting and publishing are integrated with Sites. Publish separately; MDN describes concepts including hosting, registrars and GitHub Pages.
Code and hosting control Designed around a prompt-based creation workflow. More direct involvement in the code and choice of publishing route.
Custom domain Optional where supported; requires an existing domain and DNS access. Domain and hosting arrangements depend on the publishing route you choose.
Availability and permissions Subject to plan rollout, workspace settings and publishing controls. Depends on the tools and publishing service selected.
Learning web fundamentals Not required for the basic prompt-based Sites workflow. Suitable if learning or manually editing HTML and CSS is a goal.

If you want to learn the fundamentals or manually edit generated code, MDN’s Your first website is an optional starting point. Its Publishing your website guide explains separate publishing concepts. Neither is a prerequisite for using ChatGPT Sites.
