Build your business video strategy around a result, not a posting quota: decide what the video should help a specific audience understand or do, choose a format and production plan that fit, distribute it where that audience can find it, and measure whether it moved the intended outcome. Then use the results to shape the next video.
Start with one business objective
Choose the primary result this video work should support before deciding what to film. It might be increasing awareness, explaining a product, earning trust, helping a sales decision, generating a response, or supporting existing customers. A video may serve more than one purpose, but one primary objective gives the team a basis for choosing its format, call to action, and success measures. HubSpot Academy includes goal-setting and choosing an effective video type in its strategy curriculum (Video Marketing Course).

Make the objective concrete enough to guide a decision. “Improve awareness among prospective customers” is more useful than “make more videos.” “Help visitors understand how setup works” gives you a clearer brief for an explainer or demonstration. Set a realistic timeframe for assessing the result and identify the action, if any, you want viewers to take.

Use what your business already knows from customer conversations, support questions, sales discussions, and feedback. If you need more input, possible methods include surveys, social polls, and focus groups. Wyzowl’s 2026 video marketing strategy guide recommends considering audience needs, preferences, pain points, interests, motivations, and language. Use those insights to shape the subject, examples, tone, and next step—not just the demographic description.
Choose a format that fits the job
Match the format to the viewer’s need, the business objective, the channels you can use, and the production effort your team can sustain. These are useful starting points, not guarantees of performance:
Rank #2
| Audience need or objective | Format to consider | Useful measure |
|---|---|---|
| Introduce the business or reach people unfamiliar with it | Short social video or video ad | Reach or views, interpreted alongside the intended audience |
| Build confidence through another customer’s experience | Customer testimonial | Relevant engagement or subsequent inquiries |
| Explain an offer, feature, or process | Explainer or product demonstration | Watch time, clicks to relevant information, or conversions |
| Help current customers use a product or service | Instructional or support video | Completion or watch time and changes in related support needs, where you can measure them |
Before committing, ask whether the format answers the question you identified. A polished video that does not address the viewer’s need is still a poor fit. Wyzowl’s guide uses social or advertising video as an example for awareness and testimonials as an option for trust; treat these as choices to evaluate for your audience, not a universal taxonomy.

Plan the story before recording
Outline the opening that earns attention, the core explanation or demonstration, and the next step for the viewer. Draft a script or talking points, then list the visuals needed to make each point clear. For live-action shoots, prepare a shot list and schedule; consider location access and permits where relevant. Agree on review stages before filming to reduce avoidable reshoots.
Choose in-house or outside help
In-house production can make sense when your team has the necessary skills, time, and equipment for the job. Outsourcing production, editing, or voiceover may fit when the work is complex, time is limited, or specialized expertise is needed. Compare internal capacity, production complexity, budget, timeline, and the value of specialist skills; there is no single cost threshold that applies to every business. HubSpot Academy covers both in-house and outsourced production.

Start with the equipment you have
An existing smartphone can be a low-cost way to begin. Treat additional equipment as an answer to a specific problem, not an entry requirement: a camera may help with a needed image style, lighting can address a dim location, and audio tools can improve voice capture. For interviews or direct-to-camera videos, a smartphone lavalier microphone is one possible audio accessory; choose equipment according to the actual recording conditions rather than buying a full setup by default.

Plan distribution before filming
Choose where viewers will encounter the video and what they should do next. Possible destinations include your website, email, blog, social channels, and video-sharing platforms such as YouTube or Vimeo. The right mix depends on audience habits, the objective, format requirements, and your team’s capacity. Wyzowl’s guide discusses these distribution options and paid advertising as one way to reach a defined audience.

For YouTube advertising, Google describes objectives across awareness and reach, consideration and views, and action and conversions. Its Reach Planner documentation cautions that forecasts do not guarantee performance: “Although Reach Planner can provide forecasts for media plans, it doesn’t guarantee any specific performance or outcomes.” Actual performance may vary with factors such as ad quality and implementation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Measure against the goal, then improve
Choose measures before publishing, so the team knows what evidence would indicate progress. Wyzowl’s 2026 guide lists views, watch time, shares, click-throughs, and conversions among useful measures. HubSpot Academy’s course includes reporting and using data to inform next steps.
- Awareness: Views or reach can help indicate exposure; check whether the video reached the audience you intended.
- Viewer engagement: Watch time can show how much of the video people watched, while shares can indicate that viewers passed it along.
- Response: Click-throughs can show whether viewers followed a link or call to action.
- Business outcome: Track conversions or other actions connected to the original objective where you can attribute them reliably.
Interpret metrics in context. A view alone does not establish that the right person watched, understood the message, or took action. Compare results with the objective and the measurement period you set, then use what you learn to adjust future topics, formats, calls to action, and channel choices. Wyzowl’s 2026 guide reports that 82% of marketers surveyed agreed video gives them a good return on investment; that is a survey response, not proof that any individual video will deliver a return.
Keep the strategy usable
Before approving a video, make sure the plan connects the business need to an audience need and can be carried out with the available resources.
- Objective: Is there one primary result the video should support?
- Audience: Is it clear who the video is for, what they need, and what they should do next?
- Format: Does the format answer the audience’s question and suit the objective?
- Production: Are the owner, budget, timeline, story, approvals, and production approach defined?
- Distribution: Are the destination, presentation, discovery plan, and next action decided before filming?
- Measurement: Are the selected metrics connected to the objective, with a plan to apply the findings?
