Build it from a full private inventory of what you have actually done, keep the entries that show sustained commitment, responsibility and results, and send it only when a college or scholarship asks for it or clearly allows it. For a technology opportunity, the same record is reorganized around the skills and projects that match the role.
Check whether the recipient wants a resume
Start with the instructions, not the document. College Board’s BigFuture guidance on high-school resumes says the answer depends on the school and scholarship programs you are applying to. A resume is not a universal application requirement. Some institutions and scholarship programs ask for one or recommend it; others do not mention it at all. Read each portal’s instructions and each scholarship’s rules before you upload anything.

Also check whether the application already covers what a resume would add. A resume earns its place by filling a gap, such as activities that did not fit in the application’s word limits or responsibilities that the transcript cannot show. If the application has space for that information, a second document may only repeat it.

Build a private inventory before you edit
Write down everything first, then cut. ACT’s college application guidance recommends listing all of your activities before choosing what to keep. Your inventory is a working file for you, not the document you submit. For each item, record:

- Your specific responsibilities, and who you worked with.
- Outcomes you can verify, such as an event you ran, a product you shipped, or a score or ranking you earned.
Include coursework or programs that go beyond your transcript, such as a summer academy or an online course you completed with a certificate. Students do not need a formal job to have material worth recording.
Keep the entries that carry weight
Selection is where most student resumes improve. Three filters do most of the work.
Sustained commitment beats a long list
A few activities you did for years say more than a dozen memberships you joined for a semester. The Princeton Review advises emphasizing the depth and length of each commitment and adding detail that separates your entry from a bare list of clubs. Cut the brief memberships unless they show something specific.

Responsibility and contribution
College Board recommends highlighting leadership, how long you participated, and one or two achievements in your most meaningful activity. Ask of each line: what did I do here that someone else would not have done? If the honest answer is “attended,” the line is usually a candidate for removal.
Outcomes you can verify
Include results only when they are real and useful to the reader. A number such as the size of a group you led or the amount of money your club raised is a strong detail. An invented or inflated figure is a serious problem, because a reviewer who asks about it will find that you cannot support it.
Lay out a one-page draft
Use headings a reader can scan, short bullets, and consistent dates. The sections below cover most high-school records. Include only those that your inventory supports.

| Section | What goes in it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Contact details | Name, professional-looking email, phone number | College Board’s suggested header includes address too; include address only if the destination’s instructions call for it. |
| Education | School name, location if useful, expected graduation date | Add selected academic information only if it is relevant and not already on the transcript. |
| Experience | Paid work, internships, unpaid responsibilities, caregiving where appropriate | Use the same bullet pattern for every entry. |
| Leadership and activities | Clubs, teams, student government, community roles | Lead with the entries where you held a role or stayed involved over time. |
| Projects | Personal, class, or team work | Most useful for technology opportunities; see the section on tech versions below. |
| Awards, skills, certifications | Honors, languages, software or programming skills, completed certificates | List only what you can discuss or demonstrate. |
One page is the default for a high-school student. ACT describes one page as the general rule and two pages as an upper limit, and College Board describes a high-school resume as one page. Do not stretch a thin record to fill a page, and do not add a second page just to include every activity. A short, accurate resume is better than a long one with padding.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWrite bullets that hold up under questions
A useful bullet follows the pattern action + your responsibility or method + outcome or scope. Start with an active verb such as organized, built, coordinated, tutored, or designed. Keep each bullet to one line where possible.
Illustrative example only (replace every detail with your own real record): “Organized a beginner coding workshop for 18 students; wrote the exercises and coordinated three student volunteers.” The structure works because each clause names something you did and something a reader can check. Do not copy a number from this example.

ACT recommends accurate numbers and concise bullets. If a bullet cannot be supported by a number, describe the scope in words instead, such as “for the full season” or “for the school’s first robotics team.”
If you have no paid work
A missing job is not a missing resume. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ We Think Twice teen resume infographic says students can describe unpaid work and gives examples of responsibilities, activities, skills and certifications. Look for the following in your inventory:
- Unpaid work for a family business, a religious or community organization, or a neighbor, if it involved real tasks.
- Volunteer service with a named organization, including the role you held and how long you served.
- Caregiving or household responsibilities, where you think they are relevant and you are comfortable including them.
- Personal projects, such as a website, app, video channel, or research question you pursued on your own.
- School roles, including peer tutoring, library assistance, orchestra section leadership, or a team captaincy.
- Certifications and completed courses that you can name and date.
Adapt the version for a technology opportunity
For an internship, a summer program, or an entry-level technology role, the document should answer one question quickly: does this student have the skills and experience the opportunity needs? Boston College’s Career Center recommends prioritizing technical skills such as programming languages and analytical software, and adding a projects section that highlights relevant achievements.

Put skills where a reader can find them
Create a short technical skills line near the top, below education or as a separate section. List languages, tools, and platforms you have used in real work. Organize them by type, for example “Languages,” “Tools,” and “Data and analysis.” Only list what you can discuss in an interview or demonstrate through a project.
Write project entries that show your contribution
A project entry is more persuasive than a skill list because it shows what you did with the skill. For each project, include:
- Project name and setting, such as a class, personal project, or team competition.
- Purpose: the problem it addressed or the question it answered.
- Your contribution: what you built, wrote, tested, or designed, and what others did.
- Tools actually used.
- A verifiable outcome, such as a working feature, a measured result, or a completed deliverable.
Illustrative format only: “Expense tracker (personal project, Python): wrote a command-line tool that reads a CSV export of bank transactions and totals spending by category. Tested it against three months of my own records.” Replace the example with your actual project.

Match the posting without copying it
Boston College advises using relevant keywords from a job description. Use them to decide which of your real skills and projects to emphasize and how to word them. Do not add tools you have only read about. A recruiter or interviewer will ask about every item, and a skill you cannot discuss weakens the rest of the document.
Compare the two versions
One record can support both a college or scholarship resume and a technology resume, but the emphasis changes with the reader.
| Question | College or scholarship version | Technology opportunity version |
|---|---|---|
| Main reader | Admissions or scholarship reviewers | Recruiter, hiring manager, or program reviewer |
| Main aim | Add context and examples the application does not already show | Show fit for the stated opportunity |
| Lead content | Sustained activities, leadership, service, achievements, relevant academic enrichment | Relevant languages and tools, project work, contribution and outcomes |
| Length | One page is a sound default; follow any stated limit | Concise and tailored; follow the upload or employer instructions |
| Test before sending | Does each item tell the reviewer something the application does not? | Can you honestly connect each skill or project to the opportunity? |
Review before you submit
- Confirm that the recipient asks for or allows a resume, and that the document is attached in the requested format.
- Check every date, title, and number against your records.
- Read each bullet and ask whether you can explain it in an interview or admissions follow-up.
- Run a spell check, then proofread a printed or PDF copy, since errors are easier to spot on paper.
- Ask a counselor, teacher, mentor, or parent to review it. ACT, College Board, and HHS each recommend a second reader.
Several of these guides are undated, so treat their advice as general practice and confirm current requirements directly with each college, scholarship program, or employer.
Quick Recap
Mistakes that weaken a student resume
- Assuming every college requires a resume. Requirements differ by school and scholarship.
- Assuming a student without a paid job has nothing to include. Accurately described unpaid work, service, projects, and skills can be relevant.
- Inflating hours, titles, or impact. Accuracy matters more than length.
- Treating every club membership as equally valuable.
- Copying skills from a job posting that you do not have.
- Paying for a template as a requirement. Boston College’s Career Center publishes a free editable worksheet and Word template for students, so a paid product is not necessary to build a usable document.
