Steam’s documented review interfaces provide both app-level review totals and individual review records, so you can build a dashboard for sentiment, trends, and audience segments without relying on Steam’s store page alone. The key is to paginate with a suitable filter and display the query’s date range and other filters beside every total.
Choose a Steam review data interface
Steam documents two ways to retrieve a game’s public user reviews: the legacy store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1 endpoint and the newer IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews method, which replaces the legacy endpoint. The newer service does not require a key, but requests without a key associated with the app share a lower rate limit and may receive HTTP 429 responses. Anonymous responses may also be cached for up to 10 minutes. See Steamworks’ review API documentation for the service and endpoint details.

Both interfaces return review data in pages. A response can include a query summary, a cursor for the next page, and individual review records. The first page may contain the summary fields; don’t assume every later page repeats them.
Plan the dashboard around the returned fields
Steam’s query summary includes a review score and description alongside positive, negative, and total review counts. Individual records offer detail for trend and cohort views. Available fields include review text, language, creation and update timestamps, recommendation sentiment, helpful and funny votes, comment count, purchase or free-copy indicators, Early Access status, Steam Deck use, author playtime, and developer responses. The service reference also documents refunded status and filters for playtime bounds, Steam Deck use, and hardware or operating-system characteristics.

Useful views include:
- Sentiment and volume: show positive and negative review counts and plot reviews by creation date. Use update time separately if the question is when reviews changed.
- Audience and acquisition: break down results by language and purchase type, and compare playtime ranges when relevant.
- Product cohorts: compare Early Access status, Steam Deck usage, or documented hardware and operating-system characteristics.
- Helpfulness and response: examine helpful and funny votes, comments, and whether a developer response is present.
These are dashboard design choices, not layouts prescribed by Steam. Put the active date range, language, review filter, purchase type, and any other applied filters next to each chart or total. A count for a filtered subset is not the same population as an unfiltered app total.
Fetch and paginate reviews
- Choose the app ID. Use the Steam application’s app ID in the endpoint or service request.
- Set the query. Select a review filter, language, review type, purchase type, and page size as appropriate. The documented legacy endpoint also supports a cursor and an option controlling off-topic activity.
- Request the first page. Save the returned query summary, review records, and cursor. Keep the query parameters with the data so that dashboard results can be traced to their filters.
- Request subsequent pages with the returned cursor. Steam advises using
recentorupdatedwhen paging until the response contains no reviews. Cursor values may need URL encoding. - Stop when the page is empty. Do not use
allas an exhaustion strategy: its helpfulness-oriented sliding windows always return results, so it is not the documented mode for reaching an empty terminal page.
Parameter names and response details differ between the legacy endpoint and the service method; use the relevant Steamworks reference rather than assuming requests are interchangeable. The legacy endpoint reference is at Steamworks: User Reviews, and the service method is documented at Steamworks: IUserReviewsService.

Make filters and counts interpretable
Review totals depend on the query. For example, a language selection, purchase-type restriction, review filter, or date window changes which records the dashboard presents. Show these choices where users read the counts, and distinguish a Steam-provided query summary from totals calculated over pages you have retrieved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe legacy endpoint excludes off-topic activity by default. It can include that activity with filter_offtopic_activity=0. If your dashboard exposes the option, make its current setting visible: changing it changes the review population.

Handle rate limits and stale responses
For anonymous calls to IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews, design for HTTP 429 rather than treating every failed request as a permanent error. Use a controlled retry strategy and avoid issuing unnecessary concurrent requests. Because anonymous responses may be cached for up to 10 minutes, label refresh times and avoid implying that every displayed change is real-time. Steam documents these limits and caching behavior in the IUserReviewsService reference.
Use review data responsibly
Public API access alone does not establish what storage, retention, or redistribution of review text and author-related fields is permitted. Check the applicable Steam terms and privacy requirements before retaining or republishing those fields; the API references describe data access, not a complete compliance policy.
