How to Build a Social Listening and Sentiment Pipeline with Python, Gemini, and DuckDB

A practical guide to building a social listening pipeline with Python, Gemini, and DuckDB—covering platform access, deduplication, durable storage, SQL, and evaluation.

A practical social listening engine is a pipeline, not a single AI feature: it collects posts through permitted platform interfaces, normalizes and deduplicates them, labels sentiment, stores the events, and turns them into SQL-backed dashboards or alerts. Python can coordinate those steps, Gemini can classify text, and DuckDB can analyze a local event store. None of the three supplies a complete social-platform connector or streaming ingestion service on its own.

The title’s reference to Gemini 1.5 is historical, not a recommendation or confirmation that those models remain available. Google’s API overview, last updated October 6, 2026, says Interactions became the default interface in June 2026 and describes generateContent as legacy. Check current model availability and migration guidance before you build around a particular model or API method.

What “real-time” means in this design

Real-time is a target you define, not a property guaranteed by Python, Gemini, or DuckDB. End-to-end freshness depends on when a platform makes posts available, your polling or delivery cadence, API response times, queueing, classification capacity, and dashboard refresh frequency. The available documentation establishes no universal latency target or benchmark for this engine.

Choose a measurable freshness objective for your use case—for example, the maximum acceptable time between a platform post becoming available to your integration and its appearance in an aggregate. Measure that interval in your own deployment, and track each stage separately so a slow source API is distinguishable from a model or storage bottleneck.

Separate the pipeline into six stages

Stage Responsibility Design decision
Source ingestion Retrieve or receive posts through approved platform interfaces. Which platforms, permissions, and polling or delivery pattern are available?
Normalization Map platform-specific payloads to a consistent event shape. Which fields are required, optional, or retained only in raw form?
Deduplication Make retries and repeated source responses safe. What stable source identifier or idempotency key identifies one post?
Sentiment labeling Ask a model to classify normalized text into a defined schema. What labels, confidence handling, and prompt version will be used?
Event storage and aggregation Persist events and calculate trends with SQL. How will data survive restarts, and how will concurrent workers connect?
Delivery Present results in a dashboard or route alert-worthy changes. How often should views refresh, and what conditions trigger an alert?

Keep these responsibilities decoupled. If a platform changes its payload, the normalization adapter should absorb that change; if a prompt changes, the stored source event should still let you inspect or reprocess the classification.

Choose permitted sources before promising coverage

Gemini does not fetch social posts for you. You must implement the source integrations separately and confirm that each platform permits your intended collection, storage, analysis, and sharing. Terms can impose access rules, revocable permissions, rate limits, retention restrictions, or limits on onward use. Reddit’s Data API Terms are one platform-specific example: they condition use on continued compliance and authorize only uses expressly permitted by the applicable terms. They are not a cross-platform legal review.

  • List the platforms and post types you actually need; do not imply broad coverage unless the integrations support it.
  • For each source, verify current API access, permission requirements, rate limits, retention rules, and restrictions on displaying or sharing collected content.
  • Record source identifiers and timestamps returned by the platform. Preserve a raw payload or an auditable normalized representation when permitted.
  • Design for access changes and failures. A revoked credential or rate-limit response should be visible as an ingestion health issue, not silently interpreted as a drop in brand mentions.

Define a stable event shape and idempotent writes

Normalize platform-specific data before classification. A useful event record separates source facts from derived labels: source name, source post ID, post time when available, ingestion time, text or permitted text representation, language when known, and classification output. Retain model name, prompt or schema version, and classification time so results can be audited and compared after changes.

Use a stable key such as the combination of source and source post ID to prevent duplicate counts. A retry should update or safely ignore an already-seen event rather than create another mention. Keep the original text or a permitted auditable representation independent of the model label; the label is a derived result, not a substitute for source data.

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS mentions (
    source VARCHAR NOT NULL,
    source_post_id VARCHAR NOT NULL,
    posted_at TIMESTAMP,
    ingested_at TIMESTAMP NOT NULL,
    text VARCHAR,
    language VARCHAR,
    sentiment VARCHAR,
    confidence DOUBLE,
    model_name VARCHAR,
    prompt_version VARCHAR,
    classified_at TIMESTAMP,
    PRIMARY KEY (source, source_post_id)
);

This schema is a starting point, not a vendor-mandated format. Add fields only when they support a defined use, and check that retaining them is permitted by the relevant source terms.

Use Gemini for a constrained classification task

For a new integration, use Google’s current API guidance rather than coding to the Gemini 1.5 name in the title. As of October 6, 2026, Google’s API overview identifies Interactions as the default interface and generateContent as legacy. The API reference distinguishes server-sent-event streaming through streamGenerateContent from the stateful, bidirectional WebSocket Live API. Those describe communication with Gemini; they do not provide a stream of social posts.

Keep the model call behind a small Python adapter. The adapter should accept normalized text and return a validated object matching your own schema. The precise SDK method and model identifier should follow the current API reference and model availability at implementation time; avoid copying a Gemini 1.5 call pattern into a new system without checking migration guidance.

Specify labels before sending posts

Define the categories in plain language. For a basic brand-monitoring workflow, a useful schema might distinguish positive, negative, neutral, and mixed sentiment, with an explicit unknown or insufficient-context outcome. Treat sentiment as the tone expressed in the post, not as a factual assessment of the brand or proof that the author is a customer.

Ask for structured fields such as a label, a confidence value if supported, and a short rationale for internal review. Validate returned values in Python; malformed or unexpected output should be recorded as a classification failure rather than counted as neutral. Avoid sending unnecessary personal data, and verify platform and model-provider terms for your intended processing.

Manage credentials and dependencies deliberately

Google’s official Python SDK repository documents installation with pip install google-genai and Python client setup. Its repository also warns that SDK methods and behavior can change. Pin a dependency version you have validated, review migration notes before upgrading, and keep the API key in secret configuration rather than source code. The API reference specifies the x-goog-api-key request header.

Apply retries with limits and backoff for transient failures, but make classification writes idempotent so retries cannot inflate mention counts. Track API errors and processing delays separately from sentiment results. Do not treat a timeout as an unlabeled or neutral post.

Persist events in DuckDB and query them with SQL

DuckDB’s Python client can read CSV, Parquet, and JSON, query data with SQL, and write query results to Parquet or CSV. For events that must survive a process restart, use a file-backed database; an in-memory connection does not persist its data after the process exits.

One useful first aggregate is a daily count by sentiment. The exact time-zone treatment should match your reporting needs: decide whether timestamps are grouped in UTC or a chosen business time zone, and normalize consistently before comparing periods.

SELECT
    CAST(posted_at AS DATE) AS day,
    sentiment,
    COUNT(*) AS mentions
FROM mentions
WHERE posted_at IS NOT NULL
GROUP BY day, sentiment
ORDER BY day, sentiment;

For alerting, query a clearly defined condition—such as a change in negative-mention share over a chosen comparison window—and retain the underlying counts alongside any percentage. A small denominator can make percentages swing sharply, so choose thresholds and minimum-volume rules for your own use case rather than treating a single classification as a trend.

Use separate connections for concurrent workers

DuckDB’s Python documentation says its module-level global connection is not thread-safe and recommends distinct connections for threads. The DB-API documentation explains that sharing a connection serializes access because it is locked during a query. Use explicitly scoped connection objects, and choose a write pattern that fits your worker design rather than assuming a shared global connection will provide parallel ingestion.

Connect the stages without hiding failures

  1. Ingest: call a permitted platform adapter on its supported schedule or receive its supported delivery mechanism. Store the source ID and ingestion timestamp with the event.
  2. Normalize: convert the payload to your common event shape and preserve the original or auditable representation where allowed.
  3. Deduplicate: check the stable source key before processing or enforce idempotency at the write boundary.
  4. Classify: send only the required text and context through the Gemini adapter, then validate the response against the label schema.
  5. Persist: write source and derived fields to a file-backed DuckDB database using connections scoped to the worker.
  6. Aggregate and deliver: run SQL for dashboard views or alert conditions, and expose freshness, ingestion failures, and classification failures beside sentiment totals.

This sequence can be implemented with a scheduled Python process for a prototype. Higher volume, tighter freshness requirements, or multiple independent workers may call for a queue or other ingestion service, but neither the Gemini API nor DuckDB alone provides that full streaming system.

Evaluate sentiment instead of assuming accuracy

No latency, throughput, precision, recall, or sentiment-accuracy figure has been established for this proposed engine. Evaluate your own labels against a representative, human-labeled sample before relying on them for decisions. Include sarcasm, negation, mixed sentiment, slang, language variation, spam, and ambiguous brand names; ordinary positive and negative examples alone will not expose the main failure modes.

  • Define each sentiment class and the rules for mixed or insufficient context before labeling the sample.
  • Record the sample’s source mix and collection dates so you can tell what the evaluation represents.
  • Report per-class results, not only one overall score; a system can perform unevenly across classes or sources.
  • Review errors and update prompts or preprocessing deliberately, then evaluate again on a separate or refreshed sample.
  • Monitor model, prompt, and source changes over time; preserve their versions with the output so a changed result can be traced.

These are evaluation practices, not benchmark results for Gemini or DuckDB. Do not publish an accuracy or speed claim unless you measured it under stated conditions.

What the historical Gemini 1.5 reference does—and does not—tell you

Google’s June 27, 2024 announcement said Gemini 1.5 Pro had a 2 million-token context window and that code execution was available for Gemini 1.5 Pro and Flash. That dated announcement does not establish current availability, pricing, or suitability for this workflow. The code-execution sandbox described there was not connected to the internet, so it should not be mistaken for a social-platform ingestion feature.
