Yes—six months can be a realistic window for a small fighting-game prototype if the goal is to prove a playable combat loop, not to deliver a commercial fighter. Prioritize responsive controls, readable attacks and hit reactions, and repeatable local playtests. Keep the roster and presentation deliberately small; defer online play and rollback networking unless online competition is the central idea the prototype must test.
Decide what the prototype needs to prove
A prototype is a focused experiment: it should answer a design question before you invest in a larger game. Godot’s production guide, “How to make your dream game, publish it and not die in the process,” recommends proving the core idea and iterating on core functions first. It also notes that rough code and art can be appropriate during evaluation, while calling out an important fighting-game exception: animation may need attention early. In this genre, animation helps players judge timing, contact, and impact, so it cannot always be treated as a cosmetic layer to add after the mechanics.

Write a one-sentence hypothesis before you build. For example: “Two players can understand the attacks and defenses, make meaningful spacing decisions, and enjoy repeating a short local match.” That is a more useful test than “make a fighting game,” because it tells you what to put in the build and what evidence to collect from playtests.

A small team may choose two characters and offline two-player combat if comparing matchups is necessary to the hypothesis. The essential loop is movement, an attack, a defensive action, hit detection, recovery, and feedback that makes the result understandable. A second stage, a large move list, progression, or a polished menu is not inherently part of that proof.

Set a finish line you can test
Define “playable” in observable terms before expanding the project. A useful acceptance checklist might say that a tester can start a match, move, attack, defend, understand when a hit connects, recover from the interaction, and restart the round. The exact mechanics are your design choice; the value of the checklist is that it makes scope decisions answerable. If a proposed feature does not help test the core hypothesis or make the current test usable, it can wait.
Use the same discipline for visual quality. Placeholder assets are useful when they let you test spacing and timing sooner, but placeholders must still distinguish the characters and communicate the state of an attack. Replace only what prevents a meaningful judgment of the combat. Godot’s guide supports this balance: rough presentation may suffice for a prototype, but animation deserves earlier attention in a fighting game.
What a six-month plan can—and cannot—promise
The schedule below is a practical sequence, not a validated delivery formula. The cited sources do not establish that every team can reach a given scope in six months. Your available weekly hours, team size, engine experience, and 2D or 3D art demands will change the amount of content you can finish. Treat each month as a decision gate: continue only when the current work has answered its question well enough.

| 1 | Define the hypothesis, choose a technical direction, and test basic input and movement. | A crude build can accept input and demonstrate the intended movement in a small test space. |
| 2 | Make a basic fight playable with attacks, defense, health, round reset, and visible hit reactions. | Players can complete and restart a local round and can tell when the central interactions occur. |
| 3 | Make combat legible by tuning the small move set, hitboxes, recovery, spacing, and feedback. | Playtesters can describe what happened in exchanges and identify confusing moments. |
| 4 | Test with fighting-game players and newcomers; revise the core loop. | Observed problems have been sorted into core issues to fix and lower-priority requests to defer. |
| 5 | Build a representative match and add content only where it tests a real design question. | The existing loop is stable enough that an additional character or stage will teach you something useful. |
| 6 | Stabilize, package, document, and present a repeatable playable build. | Another person can start the build, understand its controls and limitations, and give feedback on the intended experience. |
Month 1: Define and de-risk
Choose 2D or 3D based on the game you want to test and the skills and tools your team already has. Select an engine only after considering those needs; the cited examples show viable paths, not a universal winner. Define the combat loop in plain language, then create the smallest test that can expose a serious input or movement problem. Do not spend the first month building a roster, menus, or a complete stage if the central movement idea remains untested.
Make a short scope document containing the hypothesis, the first playable milestone, the intended input devices, and a list of deferred features. Keep it brief enough to revisit whenever a new idea threatens to expand the project. Decide in advance what would make you revise the hypothesis—for instance, repeated testers misunderstanding whether an attack connected.

Month 2: Make a complete basic round
Turn the movement test into a simple local fight. Include at least one attack, a defensive option or other deliberate response, health or another clear round outcome, a way to reset, and a visible reaction to a successful hit. Keep the presentation simple, but ensure the feedback is strong enough to tell players whether their input and the game state corresponded.
Local play is a practical baseline for a prototype focused on combat design. The Oregon State University EECS Project Portal brief for a three-month project gives a bounded comparison: its basic goals include two simple stages, two characters, and offline two-player combat, while online play, adjustable AI, and rollback networking are stretch goals. That brief describes a 3–4-person group; it is an assignment scope, not evidence that a solo developer can produce the same content in three months.
Month 3: Tune clarity before adding breadth
Give the existing character a small, purposeful move set. Tune the relationship among attack range, hit detection, recovery, spacing, and visual feedback. The purpose is not to chase a supposedly correct universal balance; it is to make the intended choices understandable and to see whether players can act on them. Record what testers think happened, then compare that account with what the build actually did.
Use temporary art where it does not obstruct judgment, but make animation sufficiently clear to evaluate timing and impact. If testers cannot tell when an attack starts, connects, or ends, that is a prototype problem rather than a cosmetic issue. Conversely, detailed effects that do not improve understanding are unlikely to be the best use of this stage.
Month 4: Playtest and revise
Test with both people who play fighting games and people who do not. Experienced players can expose issues in control feel, spacing, and interaction; newcomers can reveal whether the basic visual language communicates what is happening. Neither group alone answers every design question.

Keep a concise log of confusing moments, missed inputs, unclear hit reactions, and dominant strategies. Capture what happened, what the player expected, and whether the issue repeated. Fix problems that block the central loop before adding more content. A move that feels confusing or unreliable can invalidate feedback about the character as a whole, so adding a second character will not necessarily make the test more informative.
Month 5: Build a representative slice
Improve one representative match enough that another person can judge the intended experience, not just the underlying controls. Add a second character or stage only if it tests a specific question—such as whether a different matchup changes the choices players make. If the current combat is not stable, spend this month on its clarity and reliability instead of multiplying the number of things that need tuning.
For each proposed addition, compare its learning value with the cost of testing and polishing the existing loop. A new character can reveal whether the system supports distinct play styles, but it also creates more interactions to understand. A new stage can test a stage-specific idea, but it is not automatically more valuable than improving the readability of the current one.
Month 6: Stabilize and communicate
Use the final month to fix blocking problems and prepare a build people can run and evaluate repeatedly. Include concise controls and a clear explanation of known limitations. Capture feedback in a consistent way so that the next development decision follows from observed play rather than from memory or the most recent suggestion.
Do not make online play a last-minute checkbox. Keep it out of the minimum milestone unless online competition is the core hypothesis, in which case it belongs in the technical plan from the start. A local prototype can still answer important combat-design questions without pretending to prove an online experience.

Make controls and combat feedback the first technical priority
Control feel is central to the genre and should be tested before content growth. Godot’s production guidance calls for smooth controls and iterative work on core functions. In a 2018 Unreal Engine interview about Omen of Sorrow, AOne Games technical director Sebastian Gana said the team modified input processing so it ran faster than the engine thread to improve the feeling of controls. That is a historical account of one team’s engineering choice, not a required technique or a general engine recommendation.
Gana also described modifying Unreal Engine 4’s main loop to support deterministic physics and simulation for that game. This should be read in context: it explains the technical demands encountered by a particular commercial production, not a baseline requirement for a small local prototype. Start with the simplest setup that lets you evaluate the game’s intended feel. Only investigate deeper engine changes if a concrete, repeatedly observed problem makes them necessary and your team can support the resulting complexity.
Make input tests repeatable. Give testers the same short task, such as moving, attempting an attack, and responding to an incoming attack, then ask what they expected and what they observed. This is a practical testing method, not a benchmark or a claim that one control scheme is correct. The goal is to find discrepancies between intention, input, simulation, and feedback before the project has too many systems to isolate them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an engine around the team and the proof
The available examples do not establish a universal best engine. Godot’s stable documentation illustrates organizing a small game with independent scenes combined by a main scene, a useful example of keeping parts of a project separable. AOne Games described using Unreal Engine 4, including a C++ and Blueprint workflow and modifications for Omen of Sorrow. Those sources show different approaches; they do not provide a head-to-head benchmark for a new project.

| Decision factor | Question to answer | Why it matters to this prototype |
|---|---|---|
| Team familiarity | Which engine can the people building the prototype already use productively? | Retraining can consume time that would otherwise go to testing the combat loop. |
| Presentation | Does the project need a 2D or 3D workflow, and can the team create and revise the required animation? | Animation communicates timing and impact, so the workflow must support iteration. |
| Input and iteration | Can the team quickly test and adjust how input and feedback behave? | Control feel needs early repeated evaluation, not only a final pass. |
| Target platform | Where must the prototype run for its intended playtests? | Choose a setup compatible with the actual test context rather than an imagined future release. |
| Networking and simulation | Are online competition or specific simulation requirements part of the hypothesis? | If they are, architecture choices matter early; if not, they need not burden the minimum build. |
Avoid switching engines during the six-month window unless a specific blocking need outweighs the retraining cost. A comparison should be based on your team’s actual experience and required workflow, not on a claim that one tool is categorically better for fighting games.

Decide whether online play belongs in the experiment
If the question is whether the combat itself feels readable and satisfying, begin with local play. The Oregon State project brief lists online play and rollback as stretch goals alongside its offline basic goals, which is a useful example of keeping network features outside a bounded first milestone. This is not a claim that online play is unimportant; it is a way to avoid spending the prototype’s limited time proving a different hypothesis.
If the central hypothesis is specifically about online competition, make that decision at the start. AOne Games said it integrated GGPO for Omen of Sorrow and developed matchmaking support in parallel. Gana’s warning from that interview is relevant in its original context: “It’s always important that, if you’re going to be making an online game, you take every precaution to code it with that in mind from the very start.” The account illustrates a deliberate architecture and production commitment, not an implementation recipe for every small project.
In the same interview, Gana said, “During development, we learned that making a fighting game is a big challenge, one worthy of respect, as it requires a very high level of technical proficiency and attention to detail.” The context matters: he was describing a commercial fighting-game production, not asserting that a small prototype needs the same team or scope. AOne Games’ team grew from four people at its 2015 start to 27 team members plus four freelancers at the time of the 2018 interview; those figures describe that production only and should not be used as a staffing estimate for your project.

When the schedule slips or a new feature is proposed, ask which uncertainty it will resolve. Prefer the smallest change that produces useful evidence. If testers cannot tell whether a hit landed, improve the feedback before commissioning more art. If the core exchange works but the matchup question is unanswered, a second character may be justified. If online play is not the hypothesis, adding it may consume time without answering the question that motivated the prototype.
- Keep: work needed to make the central combat loop playable, understandable, and repeatable.
- Defer: content that expands the game without testing a new design question.
- Reconsider early: networking, deterministic simulation, or platform-specific needs if they are central to the intended proof.
- Reassess: any plan based on team size or output assumptions that do not match your available hours and experience.
There is no evidence in the cited material for an industry success rate, average development time, or general productivity figure to use as a promise. The six-month outline is a planning aid, while the university brief and commercial interview are bounded examples with different team sizes and goals.
What a successful six-month prototype looks like
At the end, success is not measured by how closely the build resembles a finished commercial fighter. It is measured by whether it answered its design question with a playable, repeatable test. The sources support three durable principles: prototype to test an idea rather than shrink a full game; make controls and combat readability early priorities; and treat online play as an architectural commitment when it is central, rather than a late add-on. The amount of content needed to achieve that proof depends on the project and the people making it.
