1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can set up a Galaxy phone or tablet for work, travel and personal time with a few built-in controls: Modes and Routines for changing settings, Connected devices for features you already use, and Samsung Find for locating supported devices. Start with the phone or tablet you own; add automation or accessories only when they solve a specific problem. Menu names and available features vary by model, software version, region and account.
Start with the settings already on your Galaxy
Before buying anything, decide which interruptions or tasks you want to manage. Samsung’s Modes and Routines guide describes modes for grouping focus settings and routines that run actions when selected conditions are met. Samsung’s work examples include muting notification sounds and turning on Wi-Fi; the triggers and actions available on your device may differ.
- Open Settings and look for Modes and Routines. If the label or location differs, search Settings for “Modes and Routines.”
- Choose a preset mode that fits, or create a custom one. Set only the behavior you want, such as Do Not Disturb or restrictions on distracting apps.
- If useful, add a routine with a condition your device supports and one or two actions. Check the trigger and action before relying on it; a work-arrival example on one Galaxy does not mean every Galaxy offers the same location trigger.
- Try the configuration, then adjust or remove anything that interrupts normal use. Add routines one at a time so it is easier to identify what caused an unexpected change.
Set up a focused work mode
A Work mode is most useful when it makes your work period predictable without hiding messages you need. Samsung’s guidance covers preset and custom modes, including focus-related options such as Do Not Disturb and limiting app use. Choose the apps and people that should remain available for your situation; avoid blocking alerts you rely on for safety or urgent work.
For automation, keep the first routine small. For example, use a supported condition to mute notifications or turn on Wi-Fi. Samsung’s Galaxy Routines guide includes examples such as commuting to work and leaving work. These are suggestions, not a guarantee that identical conditions or actions appear on every model.

Connect to a Windows PC only if it helps
On supported devices, Settings > Connected devices groups features that can link a Galaxy to other equipment and services. Samsung’s UK overview lists Link to Windows, Quick Share, DeX, Smart View, SmartThings, Galaxy Wearable and Android Auto among the features in this area. Which options appear depends on the device and setup. See Samsung’s Connected devices guide for its described features.
If you use a Windows PC, review Link to Windows rather than assuming DeX on PC is available. Samsung’s DeX FAQ says PC support is not available for some newer models or software versions and points users toward Link to Windows; check the compatibility information for your exact model before planning around DeX.

Prepare your Galaxy for commuting and travel
A commute or Travel mode is optional. Use one if it makes it easier to control interruptions or a setting you routinely change. Set notifications and connectivity to suit the trip; a mode is not a promise of better battery life, roaming access or network performance.
Make device-finding features useful before you leave
Samsung Find or SmartThings Find can help locate supported missing Galaxy devices and earbuds, and Samsung describes options for managing a missing device. Availability depends on device, account and settings. Configure the relevant find and location options while you have the device in hand, and review Samsung’s SmartThings Find guidance. Do not assume a device can be located if the feature has not been set up or the device does not support it.

Pack charging gear that matches your device
Choose a charger compatible with your Galaxy’s charging specification; a single charger should not be assumed to suit every model. If you plan to use DeX, Samsung recommends a genuine Samsung power supply. Its DeX FAQ also warns that a PC USB port may supply less power than a regular charger, so the battery can still drain during demanding use.
Keep personal and sleep settings uncomplicated
A Personal or sleep mode can reduce interruptions when you want quiet. Start with a notification change, such as Do Not Disturb, and adjust display behavior only if it is useful to you. Samsung’s Modes and Routines support page includes sleep-related examples; available controls vary across devices and software.

DeX is an optional desktop-style workflow, not a requirement for using a Galaxy for work. Compatibility is model- and software-dependent, and Samsung documents exclusions as well as wired and wireless display routes. Confirm that your exact device and display are supported in Samsung’s DeX compatibility and setup information before buying a cable or planning a work setup around it.

| Workflow | What you need to establish | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy phone or tablet by itself | No external display workflow; use the apps and settings available on the device. | Readers who want a simple portable setup for calls, messages, browsing and mobile apps. |
| Wired DeX | A compatible Galaxy model and compatible external display connection. Samsung recommends a genuine Samsung power supply for DeX. | Readers who want an external display and prefer a cable connection. |
| Wireless DeX | A compatible Galaxy model and a display that supports the required wireless connection. | Readers who want an external display without a direct video cable, where their equipment supports it. |
Samsung’s compatibility guidance lists supported devices and connection-specific limitations; do not infer compatibility from the Galaxy name alone. A USB-C-to-HDMI or DeX cable, and a keyboard or mouse, are only relevant if your model supports the DeX workflow you want. Samsung’s newer DeX workspace guide describes Android 16 and One UI 8 behavior, including standalone DeX availability on listed Galaxy tablets and Z TriFold. Treat those details as version- and model-specific, and use the current Samsung support page to check your device.
Quick Recap
A practical order for building the setup
- Set up one Work mode and one Personal or sleep mode only if you need different notification behavior.
- Test a single routine before adding another, and confirm that its trigger behaves as intended on your device.
- Enable the Connected devices feature you already have a use for, such as Link to Windows or Quick Share.
- Configure Samsung Find options before travel if your device and account support them.
- Consider DeX accessories only after verifying exact device and display compatibility.
