GitHub Pages can host a companion website, but it cannot keep a Discord bot process running. The specific host, workflow, and persistence method depend on your bot and are not established here, so this guide explains the architecture and the choices you need to make rather than presenting an unverified personal build.
What does “GitHub-based hosting” mean for a Discord bot?
GitHub can be the control center for a bot project, but it is not automatically the bot’s always-on server. GitHub describes Actions as workflow automation for building, testing, and deploying code. The bot still needs a runtime: a machine or service that runs its process, or—in an interaction-based design—a public endpoint that receives requests from Discord.
| Layer | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub repository | Stores source code and workflow configuration. | Does not run the bot just because its code is present. |
| GitHub Actions | Runs configured jobs in response to repository events or other workflow triggers; jobs can build, test, or deploy. | A completed workflow run is not proof of a continuously running bot service. |
| Bot runtime or endpoint | Runs a Gateway-connected bot process, or receives Discord interaction requests through a configured public endpoint. | Is not supplied by GitHub Pages. |
| GitHub Pages | Serves static site files such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, including a project site or documentation. | Does not maintain a bot process or a Discord Gateway connection. |
GitHub’s Actions overview and GitHub Pages documentation describe those separate roles.
How should the platform be put together?
- Keep the project in a repository. Store the bot source and the workflow configuration there. Keep credentials out of tracked files.
- Use Actions for repeatable jobs. Configure workflows to build or test changes and, when appropriate, deliver an approved version to the runtime host. A workflow should perform deployment work, not be mistaken for the bot’s permanent runtime.
- Choose where the bot actually runs. This could be a managed runtime or a machine you operate, including a self-hosted runner machine. The choice depends on the bot’s language, dependencies, CPU architecture, container requirements, availability needs, and who will maintain the host.
- Choose the Discord connection pattern. A Gateway bot connects to Discord’s WebSocket API to maintain state or listen for events. An interaction-based app instead needs a public URL configured as its Interaction Endpoint URL.
- Define process supervision and recovery. Decide how the deployed process stays running after a deployment job finishes, how it restarts after a crash or machine reboot, and how the running process receives its token. Those are runtime design decisions, not properties guaranteed by Actions.
GitHub’s self-hosted runner overview says runners are systems deployed and managed by the user to execute Actions jobs. That makes a self-hosted machine one possible deployment target, but using a runner does not itself provide a bot service with a defined uptime or restart policy.

Can GitHub Actions keep the bot online?
Do not treat a normal Actions job as an always-on bot host. A workflow job runs work and then ends; a bot launched as a job does not gain a durable service lifecycle just because it was started by GitHub. For continuous Gateway connections, run the bot under a runtime designed to keep a process available and supervise it independently of the deployment job. Actions can deliver code to that runtime.
If you use a self-hosted runner
The runner application must be running on its host to accept jobs, and the host must be able to communicate with GitHub over outbound HTTPS. According to GitHub’s self-hosted runner reference, if an assigned runner does not pick up a job within 60 seconds, GitHub re-queues it; a job that remains queued because no matching runner is available fails after 24 hours. These are job scheduling limits, not bot uptime guarantees.

GitHub says self-hosted runners may be physical, virtual, containerized, on-premises, or cloud-based. They give the operator more control, but the operator remains responsible for maintaining the machine and its non-runner software. GitHub says runners are free to use with Actions, while the operator bears the cost of maintaining runner machines. For autoscaling, GitHub recommends ephemeral runners rather than persistent self-hosted runners.
Check platform compatibility before choosing hardware
GitHub’s current runner documentation lists Linux ARM32 support and ARM64 support as public preview. It also says Docker container actions and service containers require Linux with Docker installed. Check the runner documentation and your bot’s own dependency requirements before selecting a small Linux board, mini PC, or other host; the documentation does not prescribe a particular Raspberry Pi model.

Which Discord connection model fits the bot?
| Model | How Discord communicates with it | What the deployment needs |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway bot | The bot connects to Discord’s WebSocket-based Gateway API, useful for maintaining state and receiving server events. | A runtime that can keep the process and connection active; it generally needs outbound connectivity to Discord rather than an inbound public endpoint. |
| Interaction-based app | Discord sends interaction requests to the app’s configured Interaction Endpoint URL. | A publicly reachable endpoint configured with Discord, plus request-signature verification and suitable handling of Discord’s requests. |
Discord’s developer quick start demonstrates an interaction endpoint using an Express server, a public tunnel, signature verification, and a response to PING requests. That is a tutorial sample, not a production hosting recommendation. Pick the connection model based on how the bot works; do not assume an interaction endpoint and a Gateway connection are interchangeable.
How should the bot token and workflow be secured?
A Discord bot token authorizes API requests and is highly sensitive. Discord’s quick start says not to commit it to version control. Store it as an appropriately scoped GitHub Actions secret if a workflow needs it, or deliver it through the runtime’s supported secret mechanism. GitHub supports repository-, environment-, and organization-level Actions secrets.

- Give workflows and credentials only the permissions they need, including limiting
GITHUB_TOKENpermissions. - Review who can write to the repository or change workflows that can access secrets. GitHub warns that repository write access can allow a user to read repository secrets.
- Do not print credentials in logs. GitHub cautions that automatic redaction is not guaranteed for every transformed secret.
- If a token leaks, revoke or rotate it rather than relying on log masking.
- If outside contributions are accepted, review workflow triggers and permissions carefully. GitHub warns that privileged workflows using
pull_request_targetorworkflow_runcan expose a repository to compromise if they check out untrusted pull-request code.
These safeguards are covered in GitHub’s secrets documentation and secure-use guidance.
