How to build a shared contract for an app and keep it in sync

A practical guide to one authoritative, versioned contract for app and backend teams, including format choices, repository sharing, generated clients, consumer-driven tests, provider verification, compatibility policy, and drift troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to share an app-and-backend contract is to make one versioned artifact authoritative, pin the exact version every consumer uses, and verify both the consumer and the running provider in CI. Document behavior as well as fields: validation, errors, side effects, retries, ordering, timeouts, idempotency, and deprecation rules. Generated types and clients reduce drift, but only provider verification proves that the deployed service still honors the agreement.

What a shared app contract actually is

A contract is the boundary agreement between a caller and the component it calls. In a typical product, the caller is a mobile, web, or desktop app and the provider is an HTTP, GraphQL, or RPC service. The agreement lets each team implement independently while depending only on observable behavior, not on private classes, database tables, or internal deployment details.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The contract should answer two questions for every operation: “What may the consumer send?” and “What can the consumer rely on receiving or observing?” A list of JSON fields answers only part of the first question. It does not say whether an omitted field gets a default, whether an invalid value produces a 400 or a 422 response, whether a retry can create a duplicate order, or whether results are returned in a stable order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the artifact authoritative and immutable by version. A consumer can then say, for example, “this build was generated from contract version 3.4.0,” rather than “this build uses whatever was in the main branch today.” Version identity establishes which agreement was intended; it does not by itself prove that the provider currently deployed in production still implements it.

What to put in the contract

Record the details that another team must know to call the interface safely. Keep implementation choices that cannot be observed out of the document.

Contract area Questions to answer Example
Operations Which actions exist, and how are they addressed? POST /orders creates an order; GET /orders/{id} retrieves one.
Inputs Which fields are required, optional, nullable, bounded, or mutually exclusive? quantity is an integer from 1 through 99; coupon may be omitted but is not nullable.
Outputs What payload, status, headers, and content types can be returned? A successful create returns status 201 and an id; errors use a documented problem format.
Validation What happens for malformed, unauthorized, or semantically invalid input? An expired token returns 401; a valid token lacking permission returns 403.
Behavior What side effects occur, and when? Creating an order reserves inventory and emits an event only after persistence succeeds.
Reliability Can the consumer retry, and under what conditions? An idempotency key makes repeated create requests return the original result instead of creating another order.
Ordering and timing Are results ordered? What timeout or freshness limits apply? List results are newest first; a request may take up to 10 seconds before the client treats it as timed out.
Compatibility Which changes are additive, breaking, or deprecated? New optional response fields are additive; removing or changing the meaning of an existing field is breaking.
Examples Can a developer see valid requests, responses, and failures? Include complete examples, including an invalid request and its error response.
Verification How will each side demonstrate conformance? Consumer tests publish expected interactions; the provider runs them against its real implementation.

State units, time zones, character encodings, numeric precision, maximum page sizes, and whether unknown fields are ignored or rejected. If a behavior is intentionally unspecified, say so. Silence invites each client to invent a different assumption.

Choose the smallest suitable contract format

The interaction should determine the artifact. A public HTTP API commonly uses OpenAPI. A GraphQL service can use its GraphQL schema, including queries, mutations, input types, nullability, and deprecation directives. Protobuf-based communication uses .proto definitions. A small in-process library may need only documented function signatures and behavioral rules; creating a separate registry for it can add ceremony without improving safety.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • OpenAPI: useful when HTTP paths, methods, parameters, status codes, and media types need machine-readable documentation, validation, client generation, or linting.
  • GraphQL schema: describes the typed query surface and makes field nullability and deprecation visible to clients. Resolver behavior, authorization, rate limits, and side effects still need explicit documentation and tests.
  • Protobuf: gives a language-neutral wire definition and supports generated code for RPC or message-based systems. Keep wire compatibility separate from generated-language and runtime compatibility.
  • Documented signatures: often sufficient for a library whose consumers compile against the same source and release together, provided error and side-effect behavior is documented.

Do not select a format because it can describe data while ignoring behavior. A schema is a foundation, not a complete contract, when retries, ordering, asynchronous events, or operational limits affect correctness.

Make authority and sharing explicit

One repository, one artifact

When app and service code live together, store one contract in a clearly owned location and have both sides reference it. Do not maintain a hand-written schema in the app and a second copy in the server. Generated outputs may be checked in for convenience, but the source artifact remains authoritative and generated files should be reproducible.

Separate repositories with independent releases

Publish the contract as a versioned package or artifact that consumers can pin. A mobile build, web application, or SDK should record the exact semantic version, commit revision, or content digest used to generate its bindings. Updating to “latest” during a build defeats reproducibility and can change a release without a source-code review.

Synchronizing a deliberate copy

If a consumer cannot depend directly on the provider repository, synchronize a copy deliberately. Record the source repository, revision, and import date beside the copied file. Treat the copy as read-only: propose edits in the authoritative location, review the update, then import the approved revision. A silent mirror can hide breaking changes and makes it difficult to determine which agreement a deployed app was built against.

Assign ownership without excluding consumers

The exposing component usually owns the contract because it controls the boundary, but affected consumers must review proposed changes. Ownership means responsibility for correctness, release notes, compatibility policy, and verification—not unilateral permission to alter assumptions on which clients depend.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Map the boundary. List every operation, event, or library entry point between the app and the service. Identify all consumers, including scheduled jobs, older mobile versions, partner integrations, and test clients.
  2. Choose the artifact. Use the smallest machine-readable format that captures the interaction. Add prose for behavior the schema cannot express.
  3. Define ownership and location. Name the responsible team, repository path or package, review code owners, version scheme, and release process.
  4. Write compatibility rules before implementation. Define additive, breaking, and deprecated changes; the support window for older consumers; and the evidence required before release.
  5. Agree before parallel coding. Have consumer and provider representatives review fields, errors, defaults, side effects, retry rules, and examples. Resolve ambiguous terms such as “optional,” “empty,” and “eventually consistent.”
  6. Publish one exact version. Tag or package the approved artifact. Pin that version in every independently released consumer and record it in build metadata.
  7. Generate useful code. Generate payload types, client bindings, validators, mocks, or test fixtures where the format and toolchain support them. Keep generated output reproducible and fail CI when regeneration produces a diff.
  8. Add layered verification. Run schema linting, compatibility checks, consumer tests, provider verification, and integration checks. A mock-only consumer test cannot prove that the real provider behaves as expected.
  9. Release deliberately. Review the change, publish compatibility notes, verify the provider against supported consumer versions, and record the versions that passed together.

Generate code without mistaking generation for proof

Generated types catch many structural mismatches at compile time. AWS Well-Architected Framework guidance makes this point directly: “Developers can catch potential issues early in the development process with type checking during compilation to verify that requests and responses follow the API contract and required fields are present.” Generated clients can also standardize serialization, validation, and error decoding.

Generation has limits. It cannot know that a server sends an email as a side effect, that a retry duplicates a payment, or that a timestamp is in UTC unless those rules are represented and tested. It also cannot guarantee that production runs the same implementation that generated the client. Keep generated files tied to an exact artifact and test the live provider separately.

The directory names are illustrative; the important property is that the source contract, generated outputs, and verification suites have clear ownership and reproducible inputs.

Use consumer and provider verification together

Consumer-driven contract flow

In a consumer-driven approach, the app test records an expected request and response as a contract. The consumer publishes that contract. The provider retrieves it and runs the interaction against its real implementation, then publishes the verification result. Deployment checks use those results to determine which provider and consumer versions can safely be released together.

Pact documents this flow and describes Pact Broker as a self-hosted, open-source place to centralize contracts and verification results; its managed counterpart is a separate hosted option. A broker is useful when many independently released services need a shared compatibility view, but it is not mandatory for a small system or a single repository.

Provider verification

Run provider tests against the actual routing, serialization, authorization, and persistence layers that implement the boundary. Seed deterministic data, assert status codes and headers as well as bodies, and include negative cases: missing fields, invalid values, expired credentials, forbidden access, duplicate requests, and unavailable dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Integration checks

Consumer tests and provider verification can both pass while an integration still fails because of deployment configuration, a proxy, an event schema, or a mismatched timeout. Add an environment-level check for critical paths. Keep it focused on observable interactions rather than internal implementation details.

CI gates

  • Lint the contract and reject invalid or ambiguous definitions.
  • Compare the proposed artifact with the previous supported version and classify changes.
  • Regenerate clients and types; fail if generated output is stale.
  • Run consumer tests against the pinned contract.
  • Run provider verification for every consumer version still within its support window.
  • Publish verification results with commit, artifact, provider, and environment identifiers.
  • Block deployment when the selected consumer/provider pair has no passing verification result.

Version and evolve the agreement safely

Write down the compatibility policy instead of relying on individual judgment. For each proposed edit, classify it as additive, breaking, or deprecated and identify the oldest consumer that must continue to work.

Change Typical risk Safer treatment
Add an optional request field with a server default Usually additive, if old clients remain valid Document the default and test requests that omit the field.
Add an optional response field Usually additive for tolerant clients Ensure clients ignore unknown fields or update strict decoders.
Remove or rename a field Breaking Deprecate first, publish a support deadline, then remove after the window.
Change a field’s type, units, or meaning Breaking even when the name is unchanged Introduce a new field or version and migrate consumers.
Change an error status or shape Can break control flow and user messaging Keep old errors during migration or version the operation.
Change retry or idempotency behavior May create duplicate side effects Document the new rule and verify repeated requests explicitly.
Change result ordering or pagination defaults Can silently alter UI and synchronization logic Make ordering and cursors explicit; test boundary pages.

A facade or translation layer can absorb a provider’s internal change while preserving the public contract. Version the boundary only when compatibility cannot be preserved through additive fields, defaults, or translation. Keep old and new versions alive for a stated period and measure which consumers still call the old one before retirement.

Format-specific compatibility: the Protobuf example

Compatibility claims belong to a format and version, not to “schemas” in general. Protocol Buffers documentation says its binary wire format does not change and that old and new messages can be read across versions when the supported .proto syntax is used. The same documentation distinguishes wire compatibility from the evolution of descriptors, language grammar, generated code, and runtime APIs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That documentation reports quarterly releases, targets major breaking releases for the first quarter of a year, and states that support for the previous major release ends four quarters after a new major release. Those are policies of the Protocol Buffers project, not universal rules for every language binding or organization. Before pinning a compiler or runtime, check the current language-specific support table and test the exact versions you deploy.

For any format, verify the actual compatibility matrix: old consumer with new provider, new consumer with old provider where that deployment is possible, and mixed-version messages during a rolling upgrade.

Track what is deployed, not only what is published

Maintain a small compatibility record for every release. Include the consumer artifact version, provider build or API version, contract revision, generated-code tool version where relevant, verification result, and support expiration date. Expose these identifiers in build metadata or diagnostics so an incident responder can identify the agreement in use without guessing from source branches.

During a rolling deployment, the provider may receive traffic from several app versions. Keep the intersection of their supported contracts valid until the older consumer is retired. For mobile apps, account for users who do not upgrade immediately; a server-side deprecation date should reflect the actual distribution of supported app versions, not only the latest release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diagnose common drift failures

The app compiles but requests fail

Compilation checked generated structure, not the deployed endpoint. Confirm the app’s pinned contract revision, the provider build serving the request, base URL and proxy configuration, authentication scopes, content type, and serialized field names. Re-run provider verification against the same environment.

A copied schema differs between repositories

Compare the recorded source revision and digest. Restore the consumer copy from the authoritative artifact, regenerate outputs, and require future imports to include a reviewed change record. Do not hand-edit the copy to make a failing test pass.

Consumer tests pass but production creates duplicates

The contract likely describes fields but not side effects or idempotency. Add an explicit retry policy, idempotency-key rule, duplicate-response behavior, and a provider test that sends the same request more than once.

A harmless-looking field addition breaks a client

The client may use a strict decoder that rejects unknown fields, or the new field may alter a generated enum or one-of representation. Test the actual decoder and classify compatibility according to the language and library in use rather than assuming that “optional” is universally safe.

Verification is green for the wrong provider

Ensure the test points to the intended build, database, feature flags, and routing layer. Publish environment and commit identifiers with the result. A passing test against a mock or stale staging deployment is not evidence about the production implementation.

A governance checklist for every contract change

  • Is there exactly one authoritative artifact?
  • Does the change describe inputs, outputs, errors, validation, side effects, retries, ordering, and timeouts that consumers can observe?
  • Are all affected consumers identified, including older deployed versions?
  • Is the change labeled additive, breaking, or deprecated?
  • Are defaults, nullability, units, time zones, limits, and unknown-field behavior explicit?
  • Has the exact artifact version been published and pinned?
  • Were generated clients, validators, and fixtures regenerated and reviewed?
  • Did consumer tests and real-provider verification both run?
  • Does CI know which consumer/provider pairs are safe to deploy?
  • Is the deprecation deadline and owner recorded?
  • Can an operator identify the contract revision used by a running build?

How to choose the right level of machinery

A two-component project may need only a versioned OpenAPI, GraphQL, or protobuf file, generated types, and CI checks. Add a registry or broker when many services release independently and teams need a central history of contracts, verification results, and deployment compatibility. The tool should solve coordination and evidence problems; it should not replace clear ownership or a compatibility policy.

Use a package when consumers need immutable, dependency-managed artifacts. Use a synchronized copy when repository boundaries make direct dependencies impractical, but preserve provenance and review every update. Use a facade or explicit API version when a breaking provider change cannot be made additive. In every case, the essential controls remain the same: one authority, pinned versions, behavioral documentation, consumer expectations, provider verification, and deliberate evolution.

Final implementation pattern

Start with a contract that is small enough to review and complete enough to describe observable behavior. Give it an owner and a version. Make every consumer depend on an exact revision. Generate repetitive code, then test the live provider rather than trusting generated output. Classify changes before merging them, keep older versions for the promised support window, and publish evidence showing which deployed versions were verified together. That combination keeps an app and its backend synchronized without forcing either side to know how the other is implemented.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a shared contract require a separate registry?

No. A versioned artifact in a shared repository or package is enough for many projects. A registry or broker becomes useful when numerous independently released components need centralized contract and verification history.

Are generated client types sufficient to prevent drift?

They catch many structural mismatches at build time, but they do not prove that the deployed provider honors side effects, retries, errors, or operational limits. Pair generation with provider verification and integration checks.

When should an API get a new version?

Preserve the existing version with optional fields, defaults, or a translation layer when possible. Use a new version when removing or reinterpreting fields, changing error semantics, or altering behavior in a way that supported consumers cannot safely absorb.
