When a run breaks its data contract, capture the failure, decide whether it is a page change or an execution problem, propose a narrowly scoped patch, then verify the extracted result in isolation. Promote only when the proof passes; otherwise preserve the working version and stop for review.
Design the scraper around a data contract, not a successful page load
A process that exits successfully, finds a page, or locates an element has not necessarily collected the intended data. Define success in terms of what downstream consumers rely on. For each task, specify required fields, types, acceptable missing values, record-count bounds where meaningful, and domain-specific invariants.

For example, a product-list scraper might require each record to contain a non-empty title and a parseable price, while a news scraper might require a headline, publication date, and canonical article URL. Those are examples, not universal rules: choose checks that fit the data source and the consequences of an incorrect result. A count check can detect an unexpectedly empty extraction, but it cannot by itself prove that the records are the right ones.
Keep the ordinary scraper deterministic: the same version, input, and relevant page state should follow the same extraction logic. The agent is a recovery mechanism, not a second unconstrained scraper that silently takes over whenever the main path becomes inconvenient.

Use this repair pipeline
- Run the current version. Execute the normal scraper and validate its output against the data contract. Trigger repair on a meaningful contract failure, not merely because a page element was absent once.
- Capture the failure state. Preserve the actual exception, URL and run context, relevant DOM or accessibility snapshot, screenshot, and—when lawful and appropriate—the last known-good output. Selenium’s AI-agent guidance recommends giving an agent the real exception rather than a generic failure message and notes that a screenshot taken at failure can reveal blockers a stack trace misses (Selenium: Using AI coding agents with Selenium).
- Classify before changing code. Determine whether evidence points to a changed locator or page structure, or instead to a timeout, overlay, authentication problem, rate limit, or changed data contract. Playwright notes that unexpected overlays can block actions and may need to be handled before retrying; replacing a locator without diagnosing the blocker can conceal the real problem (Playwright Page API).
- Propose a bounded patch. Allow edits to a small surface—such as a locator or wait condition—unless the captured evidence justifies more. Require an explanation of the observed failure, the proposed change, and its expected effect. Reject a patch that relies on an ambiguous match or an unsupported guess about what an element means.
- Verify independently. Run the candidate in an isolated environment against controlled fixtures or a controlled target. Validate the extracted fields, types, values, and task-specific invariants, not just whether the new selector returns an element.
- Record the outcome and gate promotion. Store the diff, assertions, run result, and useful trace or screenshot. Promote only if the proof passes. If the result is ambiguous or verification fails, retain the prior version and surface the case for human review.
Make verification prove the consumer-visible result
Tests should check the outcome a user or downstream consumer depends on, rather than implementation details alone. Playwright’s best-practices guidance recommends verifying user-visible behavior and using web-first assertions that wait for expected conditions (Playwright: Best Practices). Applying that principle to scraping means asserting the meaning and shape of extracted data: a date parses as a date, a required price is present and plausible for the task, and the resulting records satisfy the agreed schema.
A selector-found assertion is useful as a diagnostic check, but it is not the proof gate. A selector can match the wrong item, a placeholder, or an element whose text has changed meaning. Combine structural checks with task-specific checks on the output. Where the correct value is not knowable in advance, use invariants and controlled fixtures rather than pretending an unverified live value is ground truth.
Isolation matters because earlier runs can leave state that makes a broken candidate appear to work. Use a fresh browser context or equivalent clean state for verification, and make test inputs repeatable where possible. Playwright explicitly recommends test isolation; for a scraper agent, the practical goal is that a candidate must earn its pass without inheriting success from a previous run (Playwright: Best Practices).

Distinguish a retry from a repair
A retry is an execution mechanism, not evidence that a patch is correct. Playwright distinguishes tests that pass on the first run, fail and then pass on retry (classified as flaky), and remain failed after retries (Playwright: Retries). Preserve the first result and every retry result rather than recording only the final green status.
If the same unchanged scraper succeeds after a retry, investigate a transient condition such as timing or an overlay before editing extraction logic. If a candidate patch passes only intermittently, it has not established a stable repair. Set a bounded retry policy for diagnosis and verification, but do not treat repeated attempts as a substitute for a passing contract check.
Keep the agent’s repair authority narrow
Constrain what the model can modify and where it can execute. A reasonable default is to permit candidate changes to locator definitions or wait conditions while keeping output schema, network policy, authentication handling, and release configuration outside the agent’s write scope. Expand that scope only when captured evidence supports a broader change and the verification plan covers it.

Give the agent the minimum context needed to reason well: the real exception, relevant page evidence, the failed assertion, and a known-good example if one is available. Avoid sending secrets or unnecessary personal data in screenshots, DOM snapshots, logs, or prompts. Persist artifacts according to the site’s access rules and the sensitivity of the data.

Require the agent to state what evidence supports its diagnosis and what result should change if its patch is right. If several elements plausibly match, the evidence does not establish the target, or the expected output cannot be checked, the safe action is to stop—not to select the most convenient interpretation.
Make every promotion auditable and reversible
Keep an immutable record for each attempted repair: the scraper version before and after, the patch diff, triggering failure, diagnosis, assertions run, first-run and retry outcomes, and relevant artifacts. A reviewer should be able to answer what changed, why it changed, and what evidence passed without reconstructing the agent’s session.

Promotion should be a separate decision from patch generation. Keep the previous working version available for rollback, and avoid overwriting it when a verification run is inconclusive. This release gate is a design safeguard: the cited browser-testing guidance informs isolation, assertions, and failure diagnosis, but it does not prescribe a complete autonomous scraper-repair architecture.

A self-built repair flow gives you direct control over the patch surface, contract checks, isolation, and promotion decision. A hosted feature may reduce the amount of healing infrastructure you must build, but its behavior and prerequisites need to match your use case.

Whether you use a hosted feature or build the repair loop yourself, keep the same independent proof gate. A healed locator is a proposed way to find something; it does not alone demonstrate that the scraper extracted the intended data.
Know when not to heal automatically
- The page presents an authentication challenge, rate limit, or access restriction rather than a locator change.
- The output schema or meaning of a field appears to have changed and no approved contract update exists.
- Multiple candidate elements match, or the evidence cannot establish which one represents the intended data.
- The candidate passes only after retries or fails an output invariant.
- Verification would require retaining or exposing data that should not be captured.
In these cases, retain the last known-good version, report the failure with its evidence, and ask for a human decision. An agent that declines to guess is functioning correctly: safe recovery includes a clear stop condition.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Playwright and Selenium document testing and diagnostic practices, and BrowserStack documents a specific hosted healing feature. These sources support the design principles above, not a measured accuracy rate for self-healing scrapers or proof that autonomous repair is safe across sites. No general repair-success percentage follows from this guidance. Evaluate a system on your own representative failures and contract checks before granting it broader promotion authority.
