You can access home PCs remotely through a managed device network such as Tailscale, or build a VPN around a cloud server. Those are different setups, and the title alone does not establish which one was used. The practical choice depends on whether you need access to a few PCs, devices across your home network, or all internet traffic routed through a remote node. Software may be free under qualifying terms; a cloud VM and its traffic are not automatically free.
Choose the kind of access you need
“Remote access to my home PCs” can mean three different things. Decide which applies before choosing a network design:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Connect to specific PCs: Install a supported client on each PC and the device you will use remotely. A managed mesh network such as Tailscale is designed to connect enrolled devices.
- Reach devices that cannot run the client: Use a subnet router on the home network to advertise routes to those devices. The router must be configured and kept available.
- Send general internet traffic through a remote node: Configure an exit node. This is not the same as reaching devices on a home subnet.
A cloud VM is a separate option: it can join a network or host a self-managed VPN endpoint, but it does not automatically connect your home PCs. Every node still needs the appropriate client, server, route, or peer configuration.

Option 1: Connect the PCs with a managed tailnet
Tailscale’s quickstart describes installing and authenticating clients, then managing membership and access in the tailnet admin console. Enrolled devices receive unique 100.x.y.z addresses; MagicDNS can provide names that are easier to remember. Consult the current Tailscale quickstart for supported installation steps and plan terms.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Install Tailscale on each home PC and the remote device, then authenticate them into the same tailnet.
- Confirm the devices appear in the admin console and test access using the device address or MagicDNS name.
- Review the tailnet’s permissions and grant access only to the users, devices, and services that need it. Encryption protects traffic in transit; permissions determine who is allowed to reach what.
Tailscale’s quickstart, last validated January 5, 2026, describes a Personal plan with six free users for qualifying signups using public-domain email addresses. That is a plan condition, not proof that every deployment or cloud resource costs nothing; check Tailscale’s current terms before relying on it.
Option 2: Reach other devices on the home LAN
A subnet router is useful when the target device cannot run the network client. Tailscale’s subnet-router documentation explains how to advertise private-subnet routes, approve them in the admin console, and control access with rules. On Linux, IP forwarding must be enabled.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Choose a suitable device on the home network to act as the subnet router. It needs to remain powered on and reachable.
- Install the client and advertise only the private subnet or routes you intend to use.
- Approve the advertised routes in the admin console, then configure access rules for the relevant users and devices.
- On a Linux router, enable IP forwarding and check firewall behavior. Tailscale advises ensuring the firewall denies forwarded traffic by default, so advertising a route does not unintentionally permit broader access.
The documentation does not establish that you need to buy a gateway: an existing suitable device may work. A subnet router is not a shortcut around access controls; route approval and permissions remain part of the setup.

Option 3: Use an exit node only if you need it
An exit node routes general internet-bound traffic through a selected device. A subnet router instead provides access to specified private networks. If your goal is simply to connect to a home PC, an exit node is usually a different capability from the one you are asking for.

Tailscale’s exit-node guide covers enabling and approving an exit node and selecting it for use. Do so only when routing your internet traffic through that node is intentional; it changes the path of general outbound traffic, not just access to a particular LAN device.
Option 4: Run a VPN endpoint on a cloud VM
A self-managed cloud VPN can provide a public endpoint, but it adds server administration and does not make the home network available by itself. You still need to configure the home-side peer or routing, the remote clients, and any required firewall or network rules. The cloud provider, account, VM uptime, and billing terms become dependencies.

Tailscale on a cloud VM
Tailscale documents joining an AWS EC2 virtual machine to a tailnet in its AWS VM guide, last validated January 12, 2026. That makes the VM another enrolled device; it does not make the VM the only route to your home PCs. The guide does not establish that a chosen AWS configuration will be free.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSelf-managed WireGuard
WireGuard requires configuring interfaces, keys, peers, endpoints, and the routing and firewall behavior needed for the topology. Its project documentation describes the protocol this way: “WireGuard securely encapsulates IP packets over UDP.” The WireGuard Quick Start explains peer configuration and persistent keepalive. Keepalive is normally off; the documentation describes 25 seconds as a sensible interval when a peer behind NAT or a firewall needs to remain reachable after traffic goes idle. It is conditional, not a setting every user should enable.

OpenVPN on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
Oracle provides a tutorial for setting up OpenVPN remote access in a single OCI region and links to Free Tier signup. The tutorial does not establish that every required resource, usage level, or configuration is available at no charge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “for free” can safely mean
A no-cost software tier and a zero-cost cloud deployment are not interchangeable. Tailscale’s current quickstart sets out a free-user allowance for qualifying public-domain email signups, but a self-managed VPN hosted on a cloud VM may incur compute, storage, networking, or traffic charges under the provider’s current terms. The WireGuard documentation describes the software and configuration, not a free cloud host. Oracle’s tutorial likewise is not a guarantee that a particular OpenVPN deployment will remain within a free allowance.
Before creating a cloud resource, verify its price and limits in the provider’s current billing documentation and account console. If a firm zero-cost ceiling matters, do not deploy until you can confirm the relevant VM, network, and traffic charges for your region and expected use.
Which approach should you pick?
| Approach | Best fit | Main setup work | Cost evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tailscale tailnet | Home PCs can run the client; you need device-to-device access. | Enroll devices and set access permissions. | Tailscale’s current quickstart describes six free users for qualifying public-domain email signups; this does not establish cloud-hosting costs. |
| Tailscale subnet router | You need devices on a private home subnet that cannot run the client. | Advertise and approve routes, set access rules, and enable Linux forwarding where applicable. | No purchase is established as necessary; the gateway must be an existing suitable device or an optional addition. |
| WireGuard on a cloud VM | You want protocol-level control and can administer keys, routes, firewall rules, and peers. | Configure the server and clients; account for endpoint and NAT behavior. | The reviewed WireGuard documentation does not establish a free VM or traffic allowance. |
| OpenVPN on OCI | You want to follow Oracle’s remote-access VPN tutorial. | Configure OCI networking and compute, then set up the VPN server and clients. | Oracle links to Free Tier signup, but does not establish that this particular deployment will have no charges. |
For a few PCs that can run clients, start with a managed tailnet and narrowly scoped permissions. Add subnet routing only if you need devices that cannot run the client. Choose a cloud-hosted, self-managed VPN when you specifically want to administer the endpoint and are prepared to manage both security configuration and billing exposure.
