A scroll-driven video hero maps the page’s scroll position to a video’s playback time, so scrolling forward or backward scrubs through the film instead of starting ordinary autoplay. In a case study, the original author reports building a ten-second version and scoring 100 across all four Lighthouse categories on the live site. Those results belong to that implementation and are not a guarantee for another page.
How does a scroll-driven video hero work?
The key distinction is simple: “A video that plays on scroll is not a video that autoplays.” The case-study author’s implementation pins a hero across a seven-screen-tall section and maps scroll progress to video.currentTime. As the visitor scrolls, the browser seeks to the corresponding point in the ten-second film; five caption bands fade in and out along the way.

Because scroll can move faster than the video can seek, the implementation eases the displayed progress toward the latest scroll target. The author describes using time-based easing intended to feel consistent on 60 Hz and 120 Hz displays, and stopping the update loop after it converges. Seeking is gated so another currentTime request is not issued while a seek is already underway.

A hook updates DOM nodes through refs instead. That is a choice for this animation, not proof that React state is unsuitable for every animation.

How can the video load without delaying the page?
The case study reports that the film streams as it downloads and is not loaded at all on phones, but the accessible account does not establish the exact delivery setup or mobile detection policy. Treat those behaviors as properties of that project, not a drop-in recipe.
Choose a loading strategy deliberately
The browser’s preload setting is a hint, not a command. MDN’s video element documentation explains that none indicates the video should not be preloaded, metadata requests metadata, and auto permits the whole file to be downloaded. Browser defaults differ, and autoplay takes precedence over preload.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
For a video that does not need to load immediately, consider a poster with deferred loading. MDN says a supplied poster appears while the video downloads, and that explicit video dimensions help prevent layout shifts, particularly with lazy-loaded video. The loading="lazy" attribute defers loading until the video is near the viewport; that behavior depends on JavaScript being enabled.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is a tradeoff: a poster and deferred video can reduce early work, but they may be a poor fit if the moving film is essential to the first view. web.dev’s video performance guidance notes that autoplaying video begins downloading immediately. If the poster itself is the page’s Largest Contentful Paint element, give its priority careful consideration: preloading it can compete with other critical resources.

Choose the delivery format and source carefully
web.dev recommends suitable video encodings and describes multiple video sources as a way to provide browser fallbacks. A third-party embed is another option, but it can bring extra resources and main-thread work. web.dev reports, citing HTTP Archive, that YouTube embeds block the main thread for more than 1.7 seconds on the median website. That statistic concerns YouTube embeds and the median website; it is not a measurement of every embed or of the case-study page.
Can a video hero still get a 100 Lighthouse score?
It can, but a score is a report about a particular page and test run, not a promise attached to a technique. The original author reports these outcomes for the live site:

| Reported result | What the author reported |
|---|---|
| Lighthouse categories | 100 for performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO. |
| Largest Contentful Paint | 0.47 seconds on desktop and 1.64 seconds on mobile. |
| Text contrast over the film | 8.76:1 in the reported worst case, measured pixel by pixel over the moving film. |
| Text available without JavaScript | About 1,450 words, because the page was prerendered. |
These are the case-study author’s figures, not independently audited or current measurements. The accessible account does not state the test device, network profile, Lighthouse version, number of runs, or measurement date. The score is therefore useful as an example of what one implementation reported, not a result you should expect to reproduce.
What should remain usable when the video or JavaScript does not?
Keep essential information in the page’s content rather than making visitors extract it from the film. The case study reports that its prerendered text remains readable with JavaScript disabled. Its contrast figure is also an author-reported project measurement, not a third-party accessibility audit.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- HD lighting adjustment and autofocus: The Logitech webcam automatically fine-tunes the lighting, producing bright, razor-sharp images even in low-light settings. This makes it a great webcam for streaming and an ideal web camera for laptop use
- Advanced capture software: Easily create and share video content with this Logitech camera that is suitable for use as a desktop computer camera or a monitor webcam

- Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video
- Use a poster or other deliberate fallback so the hero does not depend on a successfully loaded moving image to look complete.
- Keep headings, captions, and important page copy available as text, rather than drawing them into the video.
- Check text against the full range of moving frames; a caption that is legible over one frame may lose contrast over another.
- Provide explicit video dimensions to help reserve space and avoid layout shifts.
How should you choose between scrubbing, autoplay, and a static image?
| Option | Useful when | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll-scrubbed video | The film’s visual sequence helps tell a story as visitors move through a page. | Seeking, loading, and motion need to be handled without obscuring content or disrupting the scroll experience. |
| Ordinary autoplay | Continuous movement is necessary and expected for the page’s purpose. | Autoplaying video begins downloading immediately, according to web.dev, and can consume resources before the visitor engages. |
| Static image | A still conveys the needed visual information without motion. | It cannot communicate a sequence or motion that matters to the story. |
The case-study author suggests this kind of effect for a portfolio, venue, or product launch, but not for a business page whose main job is to answer a question and take a booking. That is a useful design judgment, not a universal rule: if the visitor’s task is urgent, an atmospheric hero should not delay access to the answer or booking action.
What can go wrong after deployment?
The author reports one cache-related failure: an updated, re-encoded, fragmented video was shipped under the old filename. Returning visitors received a stale cached copy that was incompatible with Media Source, and the hero failed. The reported fix was to change the asset filename so the new resource no longer collided with the old cached copy. This was a project-specific incident, not a guarantee that filename changes prevent every cache problem.
Quick Recap
- If an updated video fails for returning visitors but works for others, check whether an older cached asset is being served.
- When the media itself changes, use a new asset filename so clients can request the updated resource rather than reusing a stale copy.
- Test the fallback as well as the animated path, so a failed video does not take essential content with it.
