1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWordPress Multisite can provide the tenant runtime for a SaaS product: one WordPress installation hosts many customer sites, while a separate application controls accounts, plans, provisioning, domains, and lifecycle state. Core files, installed plugins, and themes are shared across the network; each site keeps its own content tables, settings, media area, and site-level memberships. The WordPress user table is shared across the network.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
That architecture works well for products in which customers need separate websites or workspaces with centrally governed software. It is a poor fit when tenants must share tightly coupled data, require strongly interconnected workflows, or need completely independent release schedules. The safest implementation is to treat Multisite as the tenant execution layer and build SaaS-specific control services around it.

What WordPress Multisite provides
WordPress describes Multisite as a feature that lets you create several WordPress instances managed within one installation. A network is a collection of sites sharing the same WordPress core files. This gives a SaaS team one operational surface for software updates, themes, plugins, users, and network settings, while still separating each tenant’s content and site configuration.
| Shared across the network | Kept per site |
|---|---|
| WordPress core files | Posts, pages, custom content, comments, and other site data |
| Installed plugins and themes | Site settings and configuration values |
| The network user table | Uploads and the site’s media area |
| Network-level administration and updates | Site memberships, roles, and capabilities |
The shared user table does not mean every user can enter every site. A network account must be assigned membership and a role on each site where it should have access. This distinction is foundational for tenant security and for your account model.

When Multisite is a good SaaS foundation
Use Multisite when the product can express a tenant as an individual WordPress site and most tenants can run the same centrally managed software. Examples include hosted publishing environments, branded microsites, client portals built around WordPress content, and other products where each customer needs a bounded site rather than a shared cross-tenant database.
Characteristics that favor Multisite
- Every customer has a clear site boundary for content, media, settings, and site roles.
- The platform team should control which plugins and themes are available and when they are updated.
- New tenants can start from a standard configuration or site template.
- Customers can use a platform URL and, optionally, map a domain they control.
- Operational work such as backups, logging, updates, and incident response can be centralized.
Cases where another architecture is safer
Multisite is a poor fit when tenants need tightly coupled shared data or strongly interconnected behavior. If a product’s core workflow depends on joining records from many tenants, or if each customer needs a different WordPress version, plugin stack, or release cadence, separate WordPress instances or databases provide a clearer isolation boundary. That choice increases operational work, but it avoids forcing cross-tenant behavior into a model designed around independent sites.

Use a control plane around the tenant runtime
A production SaaS should not put billing and account truth inside individual WordPress sites. Keep a platform control plane—your account and subscription service—and use Multisite for the tenant-facing runtime.
Control-plane responsibilities
- Store the platform account, subscription, plan, suspension, deletion, and export state.
- Maintain the mapping between a SaaS account and its WordPress site ID.
- Decide which features a plan permits and trigger provisioning or deprovisioning actions.
- Track domain verification, SSL readiness, and the domain currently assigned to a site.
- Record audit events, support actions, backups, and restore operations.
WordPress responsibilities
- Render the tenant site and execute the centrally governed plugin and theme stack.
- Store the tenant’s content, settings, uploads, and per-site memberships.
- Enforce site-level roles and capabilities for actions performed inside the site.
- Expose the site URL and configuration needed by the control plane.
Do not treat a WordPress site setting as the authoritative subscription record. A suspended account should be suspended because the control plane says so; a site-level setting can reflect that state, but it should not be the billing ledger.
Choose the tenant URL model before launch
Decide how a new site will be addressed before you provision tenants. WordPress supports both domain-based and path-based network structures, but changing the choice after customers and links exist can be complex.
| Model | Example | Infrastructure requirement | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subdomain | tenant.example.com |
Wildcard DNS and server routing for on-demand subdomains, plus working rewrite rules | Each tenant gets a distinct host name; routing and certificate coverage must account for additional subdomains |
| Subdirectory | example.com/tenant |
Working rewrite rules for path-based sites | No wildcard subdomain is required, but every request must be routed correctly to the network and site path |
Subdomains
Subdomains are natural when the product language is “your site at tenant.example.com.” On-demand creation requires a wildcard DNS configuration and matching web-server routing. You must also make sure the chosen certificate strategy covers the platform host names. A failed wildcard or host-routing configuration commonly appears as an unreachable tenant, a server default page, or a redirect to the wrong site.
Subdirectories
Subdirectories avoid wildcard subdomains and can simplify DNS, especially when all tenants remain under one host. They still depend on correct rewrite rules. A missing or conflicting rewrite rule can make valid site paths return 404 responses, expose the wrong site, or bypass WordPress routing.

Confirm server, DNS, and rewrite prerequisites
Multisite requires URL rewriting to route requests for sites in the network. Apache and IIS have documented Multisite guidance; Nginx needs its own server configuration rather than an Apache configuration copied verbatim. Before enabling the network, verify that you control the DNS zone and the web-server configuration for the production hostname.
- Choose the primary network domain and URL model.
- Confirm that the web server passes requests through the required WordPress rewrite rules.
- For a subdomain network, prepare wildcard DNS and host routing before self-service provisioning.
- For a subdirectory network, test that arbitrary tenant paths reach WordPress correctly.
- Confirm that HTTPS certificates can cover the platform URL and any mapped customer domains.
- Create a tested backup of the existing installation before changing configuration.
Build the network in a controlled sequence
-
Define the tenancy boundary
Write down exactly what is isolated per site—content, media, settings, and roles—and what is shared—core files, installed plugins, themes, and network users. This document becomes the basis for permissions, backup scope, support procedures, and customer promises.
-
Prepare the server and DNS
Validate rewrite behavior and DNS control on a staging hostname or isolated test environment. Do not open tenant self-service until the platform can route both a known site and a newly created site.

Back up and enable Multisite
Back up the installation and database. In
wp-config.php, enable the network setup capability withdefine('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);. In the WordPress dashboard, open the Network Setup tool and select subdomains or subdirectories. WordPress will provide the configuration and rewrite changes required for the selected network type; apply those changes exactly, then verify the network in a test environment. -
Lock the URL decision
Choose the production URL model before creating customer sites. Existing URL choices, bookmarks, integrations, and search indexes can make a later conversion disruptive.
-
Install and govern the product software
Install the plugins and themes that form the product surface. Use Network Admin to control what is network-activated, what site administrators may activate, and which themes are available. A site administrator should never be able to enable software that the platform has not approved.
-
Implement provisioning
Build a service that creates the SaaS account, creates the WordPress site through Network Admin or WordPress APIs, applies the selected template and defaults, assigns the owner’s site role, records the resulting site ID, and returns the tenant URL. Make the operation idempotent: if a request is retried, it should find the existing account or site instead of creating a duplicate.

-
Connect identity and access
Create or locate the network user, then explicitly add that user to the new site with the intended role. A network account does not automatically provide access to every site. Keep platform staff permissions separate from tenant-owner permissions, and test both paths.
-
Add domains and lifecycle controls
Implement customer-domain onboarding, subscription state changes, suspension, export, deletion, backup, and restore before launch. The control plane should remain authoritative and should be able to reconcile WordPress state after an interrupted operation.
-
Test isolation and recovery
Test routing, media paths, roles, plugin behavior, backups, restoration, and suspension with at least two separate test tenants. Include failed provisioning and partial domain setup cases, not only the successful path.
Design the onboarding and provisioning flow
A SaaS signup is more than a registration form. It must create an account in your platform, provision a site, apply a configuration, grant the correct access, and return a usable URL.

- Create the platform account. Validate the email or identity according to your product’s policy and create the account record in the control plane.
- Select the plan and template. Resolve the features and starting configuration before creating the site, so the initial site is not briefly created with the wrong entitlements.
- Create the WordPress site. Use the selected subdomain or path, apply the site title and defaults, and capture the site ID returned by WordPress.
- Create or associate the owner user. Use the shared network user table, then add the user to the new site with the owner role required by your product.
- Apply plan features. Set per-site options and activate only the capabilities permitted by the plan. Network-activated components can provide common functionality; site settings and capability checks can vary behavior by tenant.
- Record an immutable mapping. Store the SaaS account ID, WordPress site ID, primary URL, creation state, and current lifecycle state together.
- Return the tenant URL and next action. If setup is asynchronous, show a pending state and provide a retry-safe status endpoint rather than claiming that the site is ready before routing and configuration have completed.
Administrator-only versus self-service creation
WordPress networks can be configured so that only network administrators create sites, or so that users can create sites themselves. Administrator-only creation gives the control plane a single gate for billing, naming, abuse checks, and templates. Self-service site creation can reduce friction, but it requires strict validation, rate limits, ownership checks, and reconciliation with your account database. For a paid SaaS, keep the billing decision in the control plane even if WordPress performs the site-creation action.
Separate network administration from tenant administration
Network Admin is the operational center for sites, users, themes, plugins, settings, and updates. Tenant administrators should manage only the site-level functions your product exposes.
- Super Admin or network operators: manage network settings, software availability, updates, site creation policy, user assignments, and incident response.
- Tenant owners: manage their own site’s content and approved settings.
- Tenant collaborators: receive narrower per-site roles and capabilities.
- Platform services: perform provisioning and lifecycle actions through controlled interfaces rather than granting broad dashboard access.
Because users are shared but memberships are per site, test every endpoint and dashboard action in the context of the current site. A user who owns one tenant must not gain access to another tenant merely because both sites use the same network account table.

Govern plugins, themes, and plan features
Shared software is one of Multisite’s main advantages and one of its main risk areas. A vulnerable or incompatible network-activated plugin can affect every tenant. Establish a release process for updates, rollback, and emergency disablement.
Use central governance for common software
- Network-activate components that every tenant must have.
- Expose optional themes or plugins only after compatibility and security review.
- Keep tenant-selectable options within an approved catalog.
- Use per-site settings and role or capability checks to turn plan features on or off.
- Test updates against representative tenant templates before applying them across the network.
Do not assume that hiding a dashboard menu is an authorization boundary. Enforce plan and role checks in the code path that performs the action, and make the control plane’s subscription state available to those checks.
Handle billing, suspension, and deletion outside WordPress
Your SaaS account database should hold subscription, plan, suspension, and deletion state. WordPress can reflect that state through site options, capabilities, or a network-controlled plugin, but it should not be the source of truth for whether a customer is paid.
Plan changes
When a plan changes, update the control-plane record first, then apply the corresponding site configuration. Decide whether downgrades remove access immediately, preserve existing data in read-only form, or require an export window. Document the behavior before implementing automated changes.
Suspension
A suspension workflow should be explicit and reversible. Mark the account suspended in the control plane, record why and when it happened, then apply the user-facing behavior you have chosen. Keep an audit event so support staff can distinguish an intentional suspension from a provisioning failure.
Deletion and export
Define an export period, who can authorize deletion, what happens to the site’s media and content, and how the site ID is retired. Take a final backup according to your retention policy before destructive work. Make deletion idempotent so retries do not create an ambiguous state.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Map a customer’s custom domain
Native domain mapping has been part of WordPress Multisite since WordPress 4.5. The feature lets a site use a customer domain, but it does not remove the deployment work: the customer or platform still has to create the required DNS records and provision SSL certificates.
Best Value
Customer-facing flow
- Collect the domain. Store the requested hostname in the SaaS account and show the exact DNS target your deployment requires.
- Verify ownership. Require a DNS-based or equivalent ownership check before attaching the hostname to a tenant. Do not route an unverified domain to a customer’s site.
- Provision DNS and routing. Confirm that the hostname resolves to the platform and that the web server routes it to the intended network site.
- Provision HTTPS. Issue and install an SSL certificate for the mapped hostname. Certificate issuance and renewal remain deployment responsibilities.
- Map the site URL. Set the verified domain as the site’s mapped URL in Network Admin or through your controlled automation, then test both HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior and the tenant’s canonical links.
- Monitor renewal and removal. Track certificate expiry, DNS changes, and account suspension. Remove or disable a mapping when the account is deleted or the domain is detached.
Keep the platform URL available as an administrative fallback until the custom domain has passed DNS, certificate, and content checks. A domain can resolve correctly while still serving the wrong site if host routing or the mapped site URL is incorrect.
Operate the network as shared infrastructure
Multisite concentrates operational responsibility. Network Admin gives operators one place to manage sites, users, themes, plugins, settings, and updates, so pair that convenience with disciplined controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Backups: back up the shared installation and the per-site data and media areas. Verify that a single-tenant restore is possible without overwriting other tenants.
- Updates: stage core, plugin, and theme updates; record what changed; and keep a rollback plan.
- Logging: include the SaaS account ID, WordPress site ID, user ID, request ID, and domain in provisioning and administrative events.
- Rate limits: protect signup, site creation, domain verification, and expensive media or API operations from abuse.
- Incident response: prepare procedures for a compromised plugin, a misrouted domain, cross-tenant access, and an incomplete provisioning job.
- Data export: give customers a practical way to retrieve their content and media before suspension or deletion.
Test the boundaries before opening self-service signup
Run tests with at least two tenants and at least two users whose memberships differ. The goal is to prove that shared infrastructure does not become shared customer data.
- Create a site with the platform URL model you selected and confirm that it is reachable at the expected host or path.
- Log in as a tenant owner and verify that the dashboard exposes only that site’s data and approved controls.
- Attempt to access another tenant’s content, media, settings, and administrative endpoints; each attempt should be denied.
- Upload media in both sites and confirm that links and permissions remain associated with the correct site.
- Activate, deactivate, and update an approved plugin according to your governance rules.
- Run a plan change and verify that feature checks follow the control-plane state.
- Suspend and restore an account, checking both user-facing behavior and audit records.
- Map a test custom domain, then test DNS propagation, certificate issuance, host routing, canonical URLs, and removal.
- Interrupt provisioning after site creation but before role assignment; rerun the job and confirm that it repairs the incomplete state rather than creating a second site.
- Restore a tenant from backup and verify that other tenants remain unaffected.
Common failure modes and fixes
A new subdomain does not load
Check the wildcard DNS record, web-server host routing, certificate coverage, and rewrite configuration. A wildcard DNS entry alone cannot compensate for a server that does not route the host to the Multisite installation.
A subdirectory returns a 404
Inspect the rewrite rules generated during Network Setup and the active server configuration. Confirm that another application, redirect, or front-controller rule is not intercepting the tenant path.
The owner can see the wrong site
Review the user’s per-site membership and role, the current site context, and any custom code that assumes a network user is a member everywhere. Shared identity must never be treated as shared authorization.

A custom domain reaches the platform but shows the wrong tenant
Verify domain ownership, DNS resolution, host routing, the mapped site URL, and the certificate’s hostname. Correct the mapping before changing customer content or site settings.
A plan change leaves features enabled
Check whether the feature is controlled only by a dashboard setting instead of an enforced capability or service-level check. Reconcile the control-plane state with the site’s settings and record the repair.
Multisite versus separate WordPress installations
| Decision axis | Multisite network | Separate installations or databases |
|---|---|---|
| Core and software management | Shared core files, plugins, and themes with central governance | Independent software stacks and release schedules |
| Tenant data boundary | Per-site content tables and upload areas inside one installation | Stronger installation or database separation |
| Provisioning | Create a site through Network Admin or WordPress APIs | Create and configure a new WordPress instance |
| URL choices | Subdomains or subdirectories, with native domain mapping from WordPress 4.5 onward | Each installation can use its own deployment and domain model |
| Operational overhead | Centralized updates, governance, backups, and incident response | More independent environments to patch, monitor, and restore |
| Best fit | Tenants that behave as bounded sites using a common product surface | Tenants needing stronger isolation, tightly coupled custom behavior, or independent releases |
The choice is architectural, not merely a hosting preference. Select Multisite when shared operations and a consistent tenant runtime outweigh the need for independent stacks. Select separate installations when isolation and release independence are the product requirements.
Launch checklist
- Tenancy boundaries are documented and reflected in authorization tests.
- The subdomain or subdirectory model is fixed and its rewrite rules work in production-like conditions.
- Wildcard DNS and server routing are ready if the network uses subdomains.
- Backups, single-tenant restore, export, and deletion procedures are tested.
- Network Admin governance covers plugins, themes, updates, and site creation.
- Provisioning records the SaaS account ID and WordPress site ID and safely handles retries.
- Site memberships and roles are assigned explicitly for every owner and collaborator.
- Billing and lifecycle state remain authoritative in the control plane.
- Custom-domain verification, DNS instructions, SSL issuance, mapping, renewal, and removal are implemented.
- Suspension, plan changes, incident response, logging, and rate limits are operational before self-service signup.
When this architecture is the right answer
WordPress Multisite is a practical SaaS runtime when each customer can be represented by a separate site, the network can share one governed software surface, and your platform services handle identity, billing, domains, and lifecycle state. Build the network around explicit tenancy boundaries, choose URL routing early, automate idempotent provisioning, and treat DNS, SSL, authorization, and recovery as first-class product features. If customers need deeply shared data or independent WordPress stacks, use separate installations instead of stretching Multisite beyond its natural boundary.
