A reliable personal AI memory system should keep active conversation state separate from durable, cross-session memory. Save only useful, supported information in small, attributable records; update or retire it over time; retrieve details only when a task needs them; and give users ways to inspect, correct, and delete what is stored. The design below is a practical starting point—not a universal vendor architecture.
Separate the current conversation from long-term memory
Short-term memory is the state an assistant needs to continue a particular conversation: recent messages, task progress, and other context for that thread. Long-term memory is information that may be useful in a different conversation. LangGraph’s memory overview describes this distinction as thread-scoped state versus information shared across threads through namespaces. Its documentation also cautions that long-term memory has no one-size-fits-all solution.

Keep these stores logically distinct even if they use the same database. A thread checkpoint helps resume a conversation; a user-scoped memory store supplies selected context to future conversations. Namespace durable data by user and, where applicable, by assistant or workspace. This reduces the risk of unrelated conversations or users sharing information accidentally.
Memory can also be classified by what it represents. These are useful design lenses, not a requirement to build three databases:

- Semantic: relatively stable facts, such as a user’s preferred units or profession.
- Episodic: events and experiences, including what happened and when.
- Procedural: instructions or rules for how the assistant should perform a recurring task.
A compact profile may be enough for stable preferences, while an event record is more useful when a future question depends on timing or history. Preserve details or source references when summarizing them could erase uncertainty or make later correction difficult.
Choose what deserves to be remembered
Do not treat every message as a memory. A candidate should be useful beyond the current turn, supported well enough to store, and appropriate to retain. A one-off detail may belong only in the conversation; an explicit request such as “Remember that I prefer metric units” is a clearer durable-memory candidate than an inferred preference based on one use.
Keep explicit user statements distinct from assistant inferences. If the system stores an inference, label it as one and make its uncertainty visible. Do not let a stored preference override a user’s current, explicit instruction.

A practical record shape
No reviewed source prescribes a standard schema. The following fields are implementation recommendations based on the need to isolate memory, identify its origin, manage staleness, and support correction:
- Content: one concise fact, event, or procedure.
- Category: semantic, episodic, procedural, or another category appropriate to the application.
- Scope: the user, assistant, or workspace that may use it.
- Provenance: the source conversation or file, or an indication that the user confirmed it.
- Time: when it was created or last updated; include the relevant event date for facts that change over time.
- Confidence or status: distinguish confirmed information from inference or information needing review.
- Expiry or review policy: specify whether it should be rechecked or removed after a defined condition or period.
Keep records focused enough that one can be corrected without rewriting an unrelated profile. Retain source detail when a short summary could conceal ambiguity.
Give memory a complete lifecycle
A useful lifecycle is capture, consolidate, retrieve, update, and retire. OpenAI Agents SDK sandbox-memory documentation provides one implementation example with separate extraction and consolidation phases. Anthropic’s Claude Platform memory tool describes just-in-time access to application-controlled storage. These are examples, not requirements for every assistant.

- Capture a candidate. Detect a possible durable fact or preference, but do not automatically promote every detail in a transcript.
- Check support and suitability. Record whether the user stated it directly, confirmed an inference, or whether the assistant inferred it. Avoid retaining sensitive or irrelevant information without a sound product reason and appropriate user controls.
- Consolidate. Deduplicate candidates, reconcile conflicts, and update an existing record rather than accumulating contradictory copies. Preserve provenance and time context where they matter.
- Retrieve for a task. Search the durable store only when relevant, then add the minimum useful context to the active conversation.
- Correct or update. When a user corrects a fact, update or remove the old record and its derived summaries as needed. For changing facts, do not assume an older value remains current.
- Retire or delete. Apply the stated expiry or review policy and honor user deletion requests across the data covered by the product’s deletion promise.
OpenAI’s SDK example can discard older raw memories when a configured limit is exceeded. That is a mechanism in one implementation, not a general retention rule: an assistant should not silently drop important records merely because a store has reached an arbitrary limit.

Retrieve only what the task needs
Loading an entire conversation archive into every prompt can exceed a model’s context limit and introduce stale or irrelevant information. Start with a compact index or profile, find records relevant to the current task, and open detailed source material only when needed. This progressive-disclosure approach keeps active context focused while preserving the ability to consult evidence.
Anthropic describes just-in-time retrieval in which the model uses tools to access files managed by the host application instead of loading all stored content in advance. The application may map those operations to files or database keys. Whatever the backend, retrieval should respect user and workspace scope, and the assistant should be able to distinguish stored evidence from its own conclusion.

For changing information, attach time context and prefer newer, corroborated information when appropriate. Do not treat recency alone as proof: a recent unconfirmed inference may be less reliable than an older user-confirmed fact. Test semantic search, structured filters, or a hybrid of both on actual tasks, especially exact names, dates, and changes over time; the reviewed sources do not establish one universally superior retrieval stack.
Make the important design choices deliberately
| Decision | What to compare | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Inline writes or background consolidation | Response latency, interruption, chance for user correction, and freshness | Inline writes can make a memory available sooner; background synthesis can reconcile information across conversations. Choose based on how quickly it must take effect, and expose inferred memories so users can correct them. |
| Files or a database-backed store | Inspectability, concurrent access, access control, scale, backups, and deletion behavior | Anthropic’s tool describes file operations while allowing the host application to map storage to files or database keys. Select a backend for the application’s operational needs; the reviewed source does not establish a universally best option. |
| Profile or summary versus episodic records | Token use, traceability, temporal questions, and ease of correction | A concise profile is efficient for stable preferences; event records preserve when and why something happened. Keep source detail where a summary could lose information that later matters. |
| Semantic retrieval, structured filters, or hybrid retrieval | Paraphrase handling, exact dates and names, explainability, and latency | Benchmark candidate methods against real queries and temporal updates. The reviewed sources do not establish a universally superior retrieval design. |
Build inspection, privacy, and deletion into the product
Users should be able to see what the assistant remembers, correct inaccurate entries, and remove information. Explain what is stored and whether summaries or source conversations and files remain after a memory is deleted. Isolate each user’s data, and restrict file-tool access to the intended memory directory rather than allowing unrestricted access to the host filesystem.

The OpenAI Help Center’s Memory in ChatGPT article, updated September 2026, says that deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from it; removing information may require deleting both the saved memory and relevant source records. That is a ChatGPT-specific description, not a universal rule for other assistants. Account, plan, region, and workspace settings can also affect available controls.

Anthropic’s Claude Platform memory-tool guidance recommends restricting memory operations to the memory directory and describes deleting files that have not been accessed for a long time as one possible expiry practice. If using inactivity as a retention signal, define it clearly and do not mistake “not recently accessed” for “no longer valuable.”
Evaluate behavior across multiple sessions
Storage volume is not a measure of memory quality. Build realistic multi-session tests with known expected behavior, including changes and cases where the assistant should not recall something. Measure whether memory helps the task without causing unsupported or stale claims.
- Does the assistant correctly recall a stable, user-confirmed preference?
- Does it use a changed preference rather than an older value?
- Does it handle a direct correction by replacing or removing the mistaken record?
- Does it avoid presenting an ambiguous inference as a confirmed fact?
- Does it avoid retrieving an irrelevant memory for an unrelated task?
- After a deletion request, does it stop using the information across the records and derived summaries covered by the product’s promise?
- Can one user’s memory be kept from another user or workspace?
Track answer correctness, unsupported recall, stale recall, task success, and operational cost or latency. MemGPT: Towards LLMs as Operating Systems (2023) reports example evaluation areas including document analysis and multi-session chat; that research does not guarantee performance for a new assistant. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal benchmark or target score.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTurn the design into a first implementation
- Persist resumable conversation state separately from a durable store scoped to the right user and workspace.
- Define a small set of memory categories and a record format that captures content, provenance, scope, time, and a review or expiry policy.
- Start with conservative writes: prioritize explicit, useful, supported information and keep inferences labeled.
- Add a consolidation step to deduplicate and reconcile updates before memories become part of the compact profile or index.
- Retrieve selectively for each task, opening detailed records or their source evidence only when needed.
- Implement inspect, correct, and delete controls, then verify that the behavior covers the source records and summaries your product retains.
- Run multi-session tests for recall, updates, corrections, irrelevant retrieval, deletion, and isolation before relying on the memory in user-facing workflows.
These steps describe a practical architecture, not a performance guarantee. OpenAI’s Dreaming: Better memory for a more helpful ChatGPT (June 4, 2026) describes provider work on background memory synthesis and its rollout scope at publication; it is a provider description, not an independently measured result. Likewise, Memory OS of AI Agent (EMNLP 2025) proposes hierarchical storage with updating, retrieval, and generation, but that proposal is not a required standard.
