How to Build a Reliable HDD Array for AI Datasets

A reliable HDD array for AI datasets depends on the workload and recovery target. Compare RAIDZ and mirrors, verify exact drive models, monitor ZFS and SMART health, and keep an independent backup.

Build a reliable HDD array by matching its redundancy to the data you can afford to lose and its layout to the way your training jobs read files. For a ZFS-based system, that means choosing between RAIDZ and mirrors, using drives suited to ZFS, enabling checksums and scrubs, monitoring drive and pool health, and keeping an independent backup. No layout guarantees a particular training speed: test with the dataset and pipeline you actually plan to use.

Start with the workload and recovery target

“AI dataset” does not describe one storage pattern. Before buying drives or choosing a vdev layout, establish how the training pipeline accesses its data and what recovery would require if a drive or the whole system failed.

Describe how training reads data

  • Large sequential reads: Jobs that stream large chunks of data may suit a parity-based RAIDZ layout.
  • Small or random reads: Jobs that make many uncacheable random reads may benefit from mirrors or a separate faster tier for the hot working set.
  • Memory-mapped or mixed access: Vision workloads can require streaming bandwidth, random access, or fast memory-mapped reads. Text and speech pipelines may combine bandwidth with random and small-file access.
  • Many small files: A large file count can reduce performance. If the training framework supports it and the pipeline remains usable, consider packaging data into an archive or database rather than assuming every dataset should be repackaged.

NVIDIA’s DGX guidance describes these workload differences; it does not establish that any one access pattern applies to every dataset or framework.

Set the recovery target

Decide how many simultaneous device failures the pool should tolerate and how much usable capacity you need. Also decide how much downtime or degraded operation is acceptable while replacing a failed drive. Redundancy choices involve trade-offs among capacity, failure tolerance, and access pattern; they do not replace a separate backup.

Choose a layout by capacity, failures, and reads

For equal-size devices, OpenZFS gives the rough RAIDZ capacity rule as (N − P) × X, where N is the number of devices in the RAIDZ group, P is its parity-device count, and X is the size of each device. RAIDZ can tolerate P device failures without data loss, provided failures remain within that parity level. Usable capacity is approximate: filesystem overhead, reservations, and unequal drive sizes can change the result.

Here is an illustrative comparison using six equal 20 TB drives. The figures are rough decimal capacity before filesystem overhead, reservations, or other reductions—not a guarantee of formatted space.

Layout Approximate usable capacity Drive-failure tolerance Read-pattern consideration
One six-drive RAIDZ1 group About 100 TB, using (6 − 1) × 20 TB One device in the group TrueNAS characterizes RAIDZ1 as space-efficient and suitable for large-chunk reads and writes.
One six-drive RAIDZ2 group About 80 TB, using (6 − 2) × 20 TB Two devices in the group TrueNAS describes RAIDZ2 as offering better availability than RAIDZ1; it remains a parity layout rather than a mirror layout.
Three two-drive mirror vdevs About 60 TB, with one drive’s capacity per mirror One device in each mirror pair can fail; a second failure in the same pair can lose the pool Mirrors are generally better for small random reads; TrueNAS particularly favors them over RAIDZ for large, uncacheable random-read loads.

When RAIDZ makes sense

Consider RAIDZ when capacity efficiency matters and the workload predominantly reads or writes large chunks. RAIDZ1 uses less parity capacity than RAIDZ2, but tolerates fewer device failures. Choose parity based on the failure tolerance you need, not only on the amount of space you hope to retain.

When mirrors make sense

Consider mirrors when random-read behavior is important enough to justify giving up more raw capacity. In a pool made from multiple mirror vdevs, each pair has its own failure boundary: a drive can fail in each pair without that alone exceeding a pair’s redundancy, but two failed drives in the same pair can take the pool down.

Size vdevs cautiously

TrueNAS recommends 3–9 disks per vdev and says not to use more than 12 disks per vdev. Treat those figures as TrueNAS guidance, not universal performance guarantees for every OpenZFS platform. A layout that fits the capacity calculation can still be a poor match for a particular job; benchmark candidate layouts with representative training reads before committing to one.

Select drives and disk access for ZFS

Verify the exact drive model

Prefer CMR drives for a ZFS array unless you have confirmed that the exact SMR drive and workload are suitable. TrueNAS warns that SMR drives can be slower during writes and overwrites and may create instability or data-loss risk during resilvering. Do not infer recording technology from a brand or product-family name: check the exact SKU.

Give ZFS direct access to the disks

OpenZFS recommends an HBA rather than a hardware RAID controller and discusses disk access, SMART passthrough, error-recovery settings, and write-cache behavior. TrueNAS says ZFS needs no RAID controller and advises configuring a controller for JBOD mode if one is used, so ZFS can manage the disks. Verify that the chosen HBA, enclosure, cabling, and firmware expose every drive and its health information to the operating system.

Use checksums and scrubs

ZFS checksums can detect corruption when blocks are read. A periodic scrub reads stored data and verifies those checksums, helping surface latent errors before an ordinary application read encounters them. If the pool has a good redundant copy, ZFS can repair a damaged block from it; a checksum alone can reveal damage but cannot recreate correct data when no valid copy exists.

Monitor both pool errors and drive health

Use ZFS error reporting and SMART monitoring together. TrueNAS describes ZFS as detecting sudden failures during I/O while SMART is polled for signs of drive degradation. Schedule SMART tests so they do not overlap scrubs or other data-protection work, and configure alerts to reach someone who can act on them.

TrueNAS’s cited drive-health page is labeled future TrueNAS 27 development documentation. Check the guidance for the version actually installed before relying on its commands or assuming its alert behavior is identical.

Keep a separate backup and test the pipeline

Plan for recovery beyond the pool

TrueNAS’s ZFS Primer states: “RAID and disk redundancy are not substitutes for a reliable backup strategy.” Keep an independent copy of important training data. ZFS snapshots and automated replication can form part of a backup strategy, but a copy inside the same pool does not protect against loss of that pool. Document how to restore the data and verify that the backup copy can be read.

Measure the real training workload

For each intended pipeline, measure representative batch reads and full epochs, and note whether storage is actually limiting the job. Compare candidate layouts under the same conditions. Storage tuning depends on workload, so do not copy record-size or cache settings without checking the data shape and read/write pattern. No single disk count or topology can establish a training speed without those workload and system details.
