Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou know an automated vulnerability patch is reliable only when it does more than stop one known crash. A defensible benchmark must reproduce the vulnerable program, expose a concrete trigger, verify that the trigger is neutralized, and test that intended behavior still works. It must also make the source revision, container, harness, agent settings and scoring rules available so another team can repeat the run.
This guide presents a practical design: define the repair claim, curate executable instances, validate patches in layers, detect crash-suppression shortcuts, control contamination, and report outcomes precisely enough to interpret them.

What a vulnerability-patching benchmark must prove
A benchmark score is meaningful only if its task definition matches the claim being made. “Automated vulnerability patching” can mean generating a patch from a complete security advisory, a minimized bug report, a crash input and stack trace, or repository context with no explicit trigger. Those are different problems. State which information the agent receives and what a successful repair must accomplish.

At minimum, every instance needs three reproducible elements:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- A vulnerable state: an exact source revision and buildable environment in which the defect exists.
- A vulnerability trigger: an exploit, proof-of-concept input, failing test, or other diagnostic that reliably reaches the defect.
- Repair context: enough repository, build and test information for an agent to make a meaningful change rather than guess at an isolated line.
A historical developer patch is valuable as ground truth and for analysis, but it should not be the only implementation accepted. Different patches can remove the root cause while preserving the same security and functional properties.
Define the target population before collecting cases
Specify languages, repository types, vulnerability classes, project maturity, and deployment assumptions. Decide whether the benchmark covers memory-safety bugs, input validation failures, authentication errors, dependency issues, or a mixture. Also state whether cases come from real incidents, fuzzing campaigns, advisories, synthetic mutations, or a combination. A benchmark that combines unlike populations without labels produces a number that is difficult to interpret.
Document the information boundary. Record whether the agent may inspect commit history, issue trackers, developer patches, network resources, or only the checked-out repository. Record the tools it can invoke and whether it may modify tests. These choices can change difficulty as much as the model itself.
How to assemble and curate benchmark instances
Start with a complete case record
For each candidate vulnerability, collect the following artifacts and keep their versions immutable:
| Artifact | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vulnerable revision | Commit identifier, repository state and build instructions | Lets every evaluator begin from the same defect. |
| Trigger | PoC, exploit input, failing test or crash reproducer, plus expected result | Shows that the defect is reachable and supplies the security check. |
| Diagnostics | Stack trace, sanitizer output, logs, error code or other observations | Gives the agent and evaluator evidence about failure location and type. |
| Reference fixed revision | Developer fix or another verified repair, with its source commit | Provides a known-good comparison and a way to test the harness. |
| Environment | Operating-system image, compiler or interpreter, libraries, build flags and runtime limits | Prevents “works on my machine” differences. |
| Test suite | Security, positive, regression and, where available, fuzzing or differential tests | Checks both vulnerability removal and behavior preservation. |
Verify the vulnerable and fixed states independently
- Build the vulnerable revision in the pinned environment.
- Run the trigger repeatedly to establish that the observed failure is reproducible, not an intermittent infrastructure problem.
- Build the reference fixed revision with the same process.
- Run the same trigger against the fixed revision and confirm that the vulnerability is removed.
- Run the relevant functional tests on both revisions and check that their expected results are defined.
- Record every exclusion: unavailable source, irreproducible crash, broken build, missing diagnostics, ambiguous expected behavior or a reference fix that does not actually remove the trigger.
Meta Engineering describes this style of curation for AutoPatchBench, which it reports as 136 curated samples, with an AutoPatchBench-Lite subset of 113 and coverage of 11 distinct crash types. The same article describes the upstream ARVO collection as containing more than 5,000 reproducible vulnerabilities across over 250 projects. These are publisher-reported dataset descriptions, so preserve the stated scope rather than presenting the counts as an independent recount.
Separate included, excluded and conditionally usable cases
Do not silently discard difficult cases. Keep a manifest that marks each candidate as included, excluded or conditionally usable, with a reason and reviewer. A flaky trigger can be useful for a separate robustness track, but it should not be mixed with deterministic cases in the main score. Cases with underspecified expected behavior may be suitable for patch-generation studies, yet unsuitable for a pass/fail validity benchmark.
How do you know an automated vulnerability patch actually fixes the bug?
Use a layered acceptance protocol. A patch should pass every applicable layer, and the report should show which layer failed when it does not.

| Layer | Acceptance question | What a failure means |
|---|---|---|
| Applicability | Does the patch apply cleanly to the designated vulnerable revision? | The agent produced an unusable change or targeted the wrong source state. |
| Build | Does the project compile or package under the pinned environment? | The patch cannot be evaluated at runtime. |
| Trigger removal | Does the original exploit or PoC stop producing the vulnerability? | The known security condition remains, or the harness cannot confirm removal. |
| Positive behavior | Do ordinary valid inputs still produce the specified results? | The patch may have disabled a feature or changed a contract. |
| Regression coverage | Do tests for neighboring and previously fixed behavior pass? | The change introduced a functional or security regression. |
| Exploration | Do fuzzing, differential checks or additional security tests find a variant? | The patch may handle only the published input. |
| Semantic review | Does the change address the root cause without unrelated behavior changes? | Automated tests are insufficient to establish validity for this case. |
Use the original trigger, but do not stop there
Replay the known exploit exactly, including input encoding and runtime conditions. Then add tests for valid behavior that the vulnerable feature is supposed to provide. For parsers, that might include accepted files at boundary sizes; for protocol code, valid messages and state transitions; for access-control code, authorized operations that must remain available.
Fuzzing and white-box differential testing can probe beyond one input when the vulnerability and harness permit. Meta Engineering reports using both alongside build and trigger checks. The USENIX Security 2025 survey describes exploit replay plus positive and negative tests, while warning that fuzzing can help establish vulnerability removal without proving that functionality was preserved.
“An AVR benchmark should provide (i) real-world vulnerabilities and their patches and (ii) at least one vulnerability trigger for each vulnerability and the corresponding test reports.”

Define expected behavior before seeing an agent patch
Write down what the program should do for valid inputs, invalid inputs and boundary conditions before evaluating generated patches. Otherwise, a reviewer may unconsciously accept a behavior-changing workaround because it makes the exploit disappear. If behavior is genuinely unspecified, label the case rather than pretending that a binary test result establishes correctness.
Can a patch pass a proof-of-concept test and still be wrong?
Yes. A patch can avoid one crash by rejecting all input, returning a constant error, deleting a code path, or adding a check at the observed stack frame while leaving the underlying flaw reachable through another path. A PoC-only benchmark rewards these shortcuts.
PatchBench reports that PoC-only validation inflated the measured patching solve rate by 1.83 times on average across 11 agents in its study. It also reports substantial similarity to historical developer patches in 25% of agent patches on average. Those figures describe that study, not every model or benchmark, but they demonstrate why a single trigger and a historical-case dataset can produce misleadingly high scores.

Detect “suppress the crash” edits
- Compare valid-input tests before and after the patch, not just the exploit result.
- Exercise alternate inputs that reach the same parser, allocator, decoder or authorization decision.
- Inspect whether the patch disables an entire feature, short-circuits a function, or converts a required operation into a generic failure.
- Use differential testing against the reference fixed build for behavior that should remain equivalent.
- Require a reviewer or semantic-analysis stage for cases where tests cannot express the security contract.
Keep “trigger no longer fails” as a measured sub-result, but do not call it a valid repair unless the other required layers pass.
How to address memorization and benchmark contamination
Public CVEs, bug reports, proof-of-concept files and developer patches may have appeared in training data. A model can therefore reproduce a known fix without demonstrating general repair ability. Record disclosure dates and the public availability of each case, and publish a freshness breakdown.
Patch similarity is a diagnostic, not a complete contamination test. A genuinely correct repair may resemble the developer patch, while a memorized patch can be subtly wrong in a changed environment. Add one or more of the following tracks:
- Recent cases: vulnerabilities disclosed after a declared model or data cutoff, where feasible.
- Transplanted cases: the same defect pattern placed in a different project context while preserving a clear security contract.
- Mutated cases: controlled changes to identifiers, surrounding code or input representation that retain the root cause.
- Hidden variants: additional triggers withheld from the agent and used only for evaluation.
Report results separately for historical and freshness-controlled tracks. Do not imply that one split proves the absence of memorization.
How can I make vulnerability-patching benchmark results reproducible?
Freeze the execution environment
Publish the container image or an exact build recipe, operating-system base, compiler and interpreter versions, dependencies, build flags, environment variables, resource limits and network policy. Include the source revision and dataset version in every run record. A container alone is not enough if its image tag can move; retain a digest or an archived image.

SEC-bench is an example of exposing these variables: its Docker-based instances and configurable model, agent, dataset, task and Docker settings illustrate the configuration surface that a report should make explicit. Repository details can change, so preserve the exact revision used for your experiment.
Make reruns affordable and deterministic where possible
Provide a small smoke test for each instance that checks environment setup before a full agent run. Cache only immutable dependencies and document cache keys. Run the reference fixed revision through the same harness to detect environment drift. For stochastic agents, use multiple independent runs and publish the number of attempts and variability rather than reporting the best run.
Report results so readers can interpret them
A single “success rate” hides where systems fail. Publish both an instance-level result and aggregate breakdowns.
| Outcome category | Definition |
|---|---|
| Patch not applicable | The change cannot be applied to the designated source revision. |
| Build failure | The patched project does not build in the fixed environment. |
| Trigger persists | The original exploit still reaches the vulnerability. |
| Functionality regression | Positive or regression tests fail after the patch. |
| Exploration failure | Fuzzing, differential testing or hidden security tests find a variant. |
| Semantically invalid | Review finds feature suppression, unrelated changes or an unresolved root cause. |
| Timeout | The configured time budget expires before a valid result. |
| Infrastructure error | Runner, dependency, container or harness failure prevents evaluation. |
Report the denominator for every percentage. Break down results by language, vulnerability class, project, crash type, task information and validation layer. For stochastic systems, include run count, mean or median, spread and confidence intervals where appropriate. Publish per-instance outcomes or a reproducible aggregate so readers can audit the headline number.
Separate infrastructure errors from patch failures. Counting a broken container as an incorrect patch penalizes the agent for a problem unrelated to repair ability; silently removing it inflates the score.
Annotate specification quality separately from execution
Some instances are difficult because the issue description or tests do not specify success clearly. SWE-bench Verified provides a useful pattern outside security: its protocol applies a patch and runs FAIL_TO_PASS and PASS_TO_PASS tests, while human annotators separately assess issue clarity and test validity. A vulnerability benchmark can adopt the same separation by labeling trigger reliability, expected-behavior clarity and test adequacy independently of pass or fail.

How to compare vulnerability-patching benchmarks fairly
Do not rank raw pass rates until task definitions, agent access and scoring criteria are aligned. Compare the following axes first.
Best Value
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Source and realism | Are cases real-world, advisory-derived, fuzzing-found, synthetic or transformed? |
| Coverage | Which languages, projects, CWE categories or crash types are represented, and how many instances are included? |
| Information shown | Does the agent receive an advisory, PoC, stack trace, failing test, repository history or only source? |
| Tool access | Can it compile, fuzz, search the network, inspect history, modify tests or use external tools? |
| Environment reliability | Are vulnerable and fixed builds, triggers, diagnostics and dependencies reproducible? |
| Validation depth | Is success based on one PoC, multiple security tests, functionality tests, fuzzing, differential checks or semantic review? |
| Contamination controls | Are case age, public availability, patch similarity and freshness-controlled tracks reported? |
| Failure accounting | Are build failures, timeouts and infrastructure errors separated from invalid patches? |
Understand the scope of named benchmarks
- AutoPatchBench: Meta Engineering presents it as focused on fuzzing-found C and C++ vulnerability repairs, with the curation counts and crash-type coverage described above.
- SEC-bench: Its project describes a broader framework for benchmarking language-model agents on real-world software-security tasks, using containerized instances and configurable task and agent settings.
- PatchBench: Its 2026 preprint emphasizes patch validity, memorization risk and shallow crash-suppression behavior, including the PoC-only inflation and historical-patch-similarity findings reported in its study.
These scopes are complementary, not interchangeable. A score on a fuzzing-derived C/C++ set should not be presented as a score for every security repair task.
An end-to-end construction workflow
- Write the claim. State the input available to the agent, permitted tools, languages, vulnerability classes and definition of a valid patch.
- Build the candidate manifest. For each case, record source revisions, trigger, diagnostics, reference fix, build recipe, tests, disclosure date and provenance.
- Run curation checks. Reproduce the vulnerable failure, build the fixed revision, verify trigger removal and test expected behavior. Mark exclusions with reasons.
- Package immutable instances. Pin source, dependencies, container image, harness, resource limits and test data. Give each instance a stable identifier.
- Implement layered scoring. Evaluate applicability, build, trigger removal, positive behavior, regression tests and additional exploration separately. Add semantic review where automation cannot express the contract.
- Add contamination controls. Label public and recent cases, and include transformed or hidden-variant tracks where feasible.
- Run a calibration phase. Test the harness on the vulnerable and reference fixed revisions, then run a baseline repair system to expose scoring or environment defects.
- Execute the study. Freeze model, agent, scaffold, prompts, tools, budgets, seeds and network policy. Preserve logs and outputs for every attempt.
- Publish the accounting. Release dataset definition, instance identifiers, environment recipes, commands, scoring code, per-layer outcomes and failure taxonomy.
- Interpret cautiously. Discuss which population and validation layers the score covers, and avoid extrapolating beyond them.
Practical checks before releasing the benchmark
- Can a new evaluator build the vulnerable revision without undocumented manual fixes?
- Does the trigger fail consistently on the vulnerable revision and pass its removal check on the reference fixed revision?
- Are valid-input expectations written down independently of the developer patch?
- Do hidden or additional tests detect a patch that simply disables the feature?
- Are flaky, ambiguous and unbuildable cases labeled rather than silently removed?
- Can the evaluator distinguish patch, timeout and infrastructure failures from logs alone?
- Are model, agent, prompt, tool, budget, seed and network settings recorded?
- Can another team reproduce the same aggregate from released artifacts and scoring code?
- Are benchmark comparisons qualified by source, scope, validation depth and contamination controls?
Common failure modes and how to correct them
The trigger is flaky
Repeat it under the pinned environment, investigate nondeterminism and either stabilize the harness or move the case to a separately labeled robustness set. Do not let intermittent crashes determine the main pass rate.
The reference patch builds but does not remove the vulnerability
Recheck the trigger, build flags and runtime configuration. If the reference revision cannot establish a known-good state, exclude the case from validity scoring or retain it only as an explicitly unresolved example.
Agents edit tests to obtain a pass
Keep evaluator tests outside the writable workspace, or restore them before scoring. Record whether test modification was allowed and use hidden tests for security and functionality checks.
Scores vary widely between runs
Increase the number of independent attempts, publish the distribution and keep budgets constant. Never report only the most favorable seed or attempt.
The benchmark rewards memorized patches
Report case age and public availability, add transformed or recent tracks, and inspect patch similarity alongside hidden-variant and semantic results. Similarity alone cannot establish contamination.
Different benchmarks produce incomparable percentages
Align the task prompt, repository access, tools, budgets and validation layers before making a direct comparison. Otherwise compare their designs and failure profiles rather than their headline scores.

Bottom line
A reliable automated vulnerability-patching benchmark treats a patch as a behavioral claim, not a crash-file edit. Reproduce the vulnerable state, verify the trigger, test valid behavior and regressions, probe beyond the published input, and publish the complete execution setup. Once those controls are in place, scores become evidence about a defined repair task instead of a measure of who can make one proof-of-concept failure disappear.
