Use rsync to copy approved media to each Raspberry Pi, and use inotify to detect changes that should trigger another sync. This makes file distribution manageable; it does not synchronize playback timing across independent players. Build the wall as two separate systems: a reliable media-distribution workflow and a display/playback setup configured for the specific Pi models and monitors.
What this setup does—and what it does not
rsync reconciles files between a staging machine and one or more player directories. inotify reports filesystem events to an application, which can then start an rsync run. Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes rsync as a way to synchronize folders between computers and shows an SSH-based example: Raspberry Pi remote access documentation. The Linux manual describes inotify as a mechanism for monitoring filesystem events: inotify(7).

These tools address file availability, not synchronized playback. Their documentation does not describe a protocol for coordinating playback starts, seeks, or frame timing between separate Pis. If your wall must show the same frame at the same instant, treat that as a separate playback and timing requirement and validate a system designed for it.
Plan the players and displays
Decide how many screens each player must drive, then check the exact board, connector, monitor mode, and operating-system display configuration. Raspberry Pi’s current display documentation says flagship models since Raspberry Pi 4B and Keyboard models have two micro-HDMI ports, and that flagship models since Raspberry Pi 4B can drive up to two displays. Each display needs a micro-HDMI-to-full-size-HDMI lead or adapter where those connectors apply. See Raspberry Pi display and KMS configuration.

For 4-series devices, that documentation describes support up to 1080p at 60Hz, or two 4K displays at 30Hz; it also describes a single 4K display at 60Hz with the documented HDMI0 setting. These are model- and configuration-dependent capabilities, not a universal setting for every Raspberry Pi. Confirm the current instructions for the exact board and OS before wiring or configuring a deployment.
Set up a safe media distribution layout
Keep staging separate from playback
Create a staging directory on the controller that contains only approved, complete media assets. Each player should have a clearly defined local directory that the playback software reads. Keeping these locations distinct helps prevent an upload in progress from being mistaken for a finished video.

- 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution

A practical pattern is to write a new asset outside the watched staging directory, finish the write, then rename it into staging. A same-filesystem rename is commonly used as an atomic handoff, but it is an implementation precaution rather than a guarantee provided by rsync or inotify. Confirm the behavior of the filesystem and workflow you deploy.
Choose the transfer direction and paths
Raspberry Pi’s example uses rsync -avz -e ssh to transfer files over SSH; adapt the direction, account, host, permissions, and paths to your controller/player arrangement. For example, from a controller pulling a player-side directory, the documented command form is:

- 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (depending on model)

- 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
- Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)
rsync -avz -e ssh user@host:source/ destination/
Here user@host identifies the remote account and machine, source/ is the remote directory, and destination/ is local. For a controller pushing staged files to a player, reverse the source and destination roles and use the player’s SSH address. Test one player and inspect the resulting directory before repeating the command across the wall.
Pay particular attention to the source’s trailing slash. With rsync, source/ copies the contents of that directory into the destination, while source copies the directory itself, affecting the destination nesting. The rsync manual documents this distinction and the meaning of archive mode (-a); it also explains remote-shell transfers such as SSH.

Avoid adding --delete unless you deliberately want destination files absent from the sender to be removed. That option can erase unrelated files if paths are wrong or the destination is shared. The Raspberry Pi example does not use it.

Run a watcher on the staging directory and have its event handler request an rsync reconciliation. Do not try to construct the complete intended destination state from one event: filesystem events report changes, and the inotify manual warns that robust applications must account for races and monitoring logic bugs. The event is a signal to compare and reconcile, not a durable, complete change log.

- At startup: run an initial sync so a player converges with the current staged content, whether or not an event was observed while the watcher was stopped.
- While running: monitor the staging directory and trigger a sync when relevant changes occur. If several events arrive close together, an implementation may coalesce them into one reconciliation rather than launching overlapping transfers.
- After a watcher restart or error: re-establish monitoring and run another sync to recover from changes that may have occurred during the gap.
- For resilience: consider periodic reconciliation in addition to event-triggered runs. This is an operational safeguard inferred from inotify’s limitations, not a guarantee made by the tool.
With careful programming, “inotify can be used to efficiently monitor and cache the state of a set of filesystem objects,” as the Linux inotify manual puts it. The application still has to handle events, failures, and reconciliation correctly.
Configure and verify each screen output
Set display output on each Pi for its actual board, HDMI connector, monitor resolution and refresh rate, and installed OS display stack. Raspberry Pi’s KMS display settings describe current display configuration and model-dependent behavior. Do not copy a setting from one player to another without checking whether the hardware and intended monitor mode match.
Before deploying the full wall, test each player and screen individually: confirm that the monitor receives the intended signal, the playback software reads the local media directory, and a completed staged file reaches that directory after reconciliation. This catches cabling, path, permissions, and display-configuration issues independently of any playback-timing requirement.

Keep playback and networking requirements distinct
For a conventional wall in which screens show different portions or content at approximately coordinated times, confirm that the playback application supports the needed layout and control model. Neither rsync nor inotify supplies that application or a timing protocol. If the requirement is only that every player eventually has the same media files, reconciliation is the relevant distribution mechanism; if the requirement is frame alignment, evaluate and test playback synchronization separately.
Raspberry Pi documents network video streaming with rpicam-apps as a separate camera use case, not as a recipe for synchronized playback across a video wall: Camera software documentation.
