How to Build a Pip-Boy-Style Wearable Computer with a Raspberry Pi

A practical guide to choosing compatible Raspberry Pi hardware, prototyping a forearm enclosure, and testing a Pip-Boy-style wearable before wearing it.

A Raspberry Pi Pip-Boy-style wearable is a compact computer, small display, portable power source, physical controls and custom forearm enclosure brought together as a functional prop. The most reliable way to build one is to choose a compatible board-and-display combination first, prototype the fit in cardboard, and test the electronics and software before closing the case.

There is no universal parts list: documented projects use different Raspberry Pi generations, fabrication methods and software. Treat them as design examples, not as parts guaranteed to work together.

Choose a build approach before buying parts

Start by deciding what the wearable needs to do. A cosmetic prop with a few screens has different software and control needs from a project that runs a richer custom interface. Then choose a display size and verify that the computer, display, drivers, operating system and power arrangement support one another.

Approach What the example uses What to consider
Scrap-built Raspberry Pi Zero W Raspberry Pi’s 2020 project coverage describes a body made from scrap plastic, a Zero W, a display header mounted to GPIO and a Python Pip-Boy-style interface with demo screens. Raspberry Pi’s project overview links to the maker’s detailed Instructables guide with process photos. A non-beginner project. The scrap-built shell offers flexibility, but requires hands-on fabrication and careful fit planning.
Magazine materials-led build Raspberry Pi Official Magazine suggests wide-bore pipe such as drainpipe, scrap plastics, a small container, foam floor mat, a 3.5-inch display, KY040 rotary encoder, three LEDs, two push-buttons, a power bank and wiring. Read the magazine’s Pip-Boy guide. Useful for planning a DIY enclosure from available materials. Prototype the shape, test the electronics before installation, and try wearing the finished unit at home.
Legacy 3D-printed Raspberry Pi build Adafruit’s guide describes a Pi Model B+, 3.5-inch PiTFT, PowerBoost 1000C, rechargeable 2200mAh battery, rotary switch and encoder, speaker and audio amplifier, LED, and 3D-printed enclosure. It includes a Python interface and map data. Read the Adafruit Raspberry Pi Pip-Boy 3000 guide. Adafruit explicitly warns that the code is out of date and may require reverse engineering. Treat the project as a legacy reference; verify hardware and software compatibility before purchasing parts.

Adafruit’s Pip-Boy 2040 is a separate Feather RP2040 and CircuitPython project, not a Raspberry Pi computer build. Its documented demo is a slideshow on a small IPS screen with navigation controls. See the Pip-Boy 2040 project overview if you are comparing prop concepts, but do not assume its parts or instructions apply to a Raspberry Pi build.

Plan the parts around compatible categories

Think in categories first, then choose components that match your selected board and enclosure. A 3.5-inch Raspberry Pi display is used in multiple documented Pi builds, but the examples are from different generations and do not establish that every such display will work with every board.

  • Computer: A Raspberry Pi board selected for the software and display you intend to use.
  • Display: A small screen with confirmed physical and software compatibility. Check its interface, driver support and operating-system requirements.
  • Portable power: A power bank or rechargeable-battery arrangement sized and wired for the selected computer and display. The cited builds demonstrate both categories, not guaranteed runtime.
  • Controls: Depending on the interface, options include a KY040 rotary encoder, push-buttons, LEDs or a rotary switch. Check the wiring and GPIO needs of your chosen software.
  • Wiring and mounting: Connectors, wire and mounting materials appropriate to the display, controls and enclosure.
  • Forearm enclosure: Scrap plastic, wide-bore pipe, foam or a 3D-printed shell are among the documented approaches. Choose based on fit, access to components and fabrication skills.

These parts come from different designs and generations; do not combine them into a shopping list without checking interfaces, driver support, dimensions, power requirements and current software. “3.5-inch Raspberry Pi display” is a useful search phrase when looking for a screen, not a compatibility guarantee.

Build and test in stages

  1. Define the function and screen placement. Decide what the interface should show, how it will be controlled and how much screen area is practical on your forearm. Select one board-display-software combination and verify it before ordering the rest.
  2. Mock up the enclosure. Use paper or cardboard to test the forearm shape, screen position, control access and overall bulk. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine recommends prototyping before committing to final materials, since repairs to glued assemblies can be difficult.
  3. Run the electronics outside the case. Connect the board, display and controls and test the software before installing them. Confirm that the screen displays correctly and that the controls behave as intended while everything remains accessible.
  4. Plan power and comfort together. Fit the selected portable-power hardware into the enclosure plan, and consider padding or a shaped arm shell. A power bank and a rechargeable battery appear in different documented builds; neither example establishes how long a new build will run.
  5. Install components with access in mind. Arrange the screen, controls and wiring so they can be reached and checked during assembly. Avoid sealing the enclosure until the system works in its intended configuration.
  6. Do a home wear trial. Try the completed unit during ordinary activities before taking it to an event. Check comfort, arm movement, dexterity, snagging and the risk of bumping or damaging nearby objects.

What makes the project difficult?

The challenge is not just making a screen look like a Pip-Boy. The computer, screen, software, controls and power source must all fit inside a wearable form without making it uncomfortable or hard to operate. The scrap-built Zero W project is explicitly described as non-beginner work, while the Adafruit Raspberry Pi guide warns that its code is outdated. Beginners should keep the first version simple, verify one working hardware-and-software combination, and postpone cosmetic complexity until the core system works.

Fabrication also affects maintainability. A glued, tightly packed case can make later repairs difficult, which is why paper or cardboard fit checks and pre-installation electronics testing matter. If the build will be worn for hours, comfort and range of motion are functional requirements rather than finishing touches.
