Start with the console’s footprint and silhouette, then build a broad, low body whose layers overlap and lock together. Add only a few high-contrast details—such as a disc area, buttons, and controller ports—so the result reads as a PlayStation-inspired display without relying on fragile decoration. LEGO’s official PlayStation set offers a useful size reference, but it is not a required scale for a custom build.
Choose a scale and footprint
Decide first whether you want a close interpretation of the original PlayStation’s shape or a looser, smaller display model. Use a reference image to identify the console’s broad proportions and the details that matter most to you.

LEGO’s licensed PlayStation set, number 72306, is a concrete display reference: the 2026 announcement lists it at over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Those measurements describe the official model, not a required scale for a custom build. The set depicts the original PlayStation console and controller and contains 1,911 pieces. LEGO’s announcement lists the product details.
For a custom model, settle on the shelf footprint before choosing parts. A wider, lower base can give you room to show the console’s outline while keeping the display compact. Check the available shelf space and consider whether the finished model will be moved or handled.

Build the main body as a sturdy shell
Start with broad layers
Lay out a low rectangular base, then build upward in broad courses. Treat the body as a connected shell rather than a stack of decorative plates: the top should not be the only part holding the model together. This is a practical application of LEGO’s general assembly guidance, not a tested custom design.
Overlap bricks to lock the layers
Where possible, offset the joints between neighboring bricks so a brick bridges the seam below or above it. As you add courses, check that the base and walls remain connected across the whole footprint. If a side panel or top layer lifts easily, revise the connections before adding details.

A plain rectangular block may be sturdy but can lose the distinctive profile. Use slopes or elements oriented sideways where a vertical stack cannot make the edges, overhangs, or inset shapes you want. LEGO’s guide describes sideways building as a way to build outward from studs or holes in different orientations. Try these shaping elements on a small section before repeating the technique around the model.

Keep the silhouette readable from the angle at which the display will usually be seen. A carefully shaped front and top can matter more than reproducing every seam or vent.
Add only the details that help identify it
Use a restrained palette of contrasting parts to suggest the disc area, buttons, controller port, and vents. These details are visual cues, not a reason to weaken the shell: attach them securely and avoid letting small decorative pieces carry structural loads. LEGO’s building guide describes details as carefully chosen elements that help communicate what a model represents.

Once you have a palette and a rough element shape in mind, check LEGO Pick a Brick for current individual bricks and special elements. Catalog selection and availability can vary by region and change over time; the service is not a promise that a particular part will be in stock. Check the display before calling it finished
- Set the model on the intended shelf and confirm that its footprint fits.
- Check that the base sits flat and that the body does not wobble when gently touched.
- Look at it from the expected viewing angle: the silhouette and chosen details should be easy to recognize.
- If it will be moved, inspect the top and side details for loose connections and reinforce them where needed.
These are practical checks for a custom model, not results from a stability test. LEGO publishes no stability measurements for this design because it is not an official LEGO model.

Consider the licensed LEGO set as a reference or alternative
Set 72306 is an official LEGO model of the original PlayStation console and controller, rather than a custom-build plan. The 2026 announcement describes functional Open and Power buttons, a controller that plugs in, and concealed buildable dioramas inspired by Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. Its listed price at announcement was £139.99, €159.99, or $179.99, with LEGO Insiders Early Access announced for October 1, 2026 and general availability for October 4, 2026. Keep the custom model’s branding clear
Describe a homemade display as PlayStation-inspired and do not imply that Sony or LEGO endorses it. LEGO’s personal-project help page says its brand names, logos, trademarks, instructions, and pieces cannot be used for commercial purposes such as marketing and PR, and points readers to its Fair Play policy.
