A useful keyboard accessibility repair plan starts with the tasks people need to complete, checks those tasks without a mouse, and turns each barrier into an owned, testable fix. Use WCAG to classify problems: functionality must work by keyboard, focus order must preserve meaning and operation, and keyboard focus must be visible. A manual tab-through is a practical first review, not a complete conformance audit.
What a keyboard accessibility repair plan should cover
Plan around user tasks and the page patterns that support them, rather than testing a handful of isolated pages. A task might involve finding information, completing a form, or using site navigation. Identify the templates and shared components involved, then include relevant menus, dialogs, overlays, media controls, custom widgets, and responsive layouts.

This inventory is a practical way to scope work, not a format prescribed by W3C. Its purpose is to make sure the review reaches the functionality people actually need and the components that recur across the site.

Keyboard operation: WCAG 2.1.1, Level A
All functionality must be operable through a keyboard interface without requiring specific timings for individual keystrokes, except where the underlying function depends on the path of movement rather than just its endpoints. The requirement concerns access to the function; it does not require a site to offer keyboard input exclusively. See the World Wide Web Consortium’s WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.1.1, Keyboard.
#1 Best Overall
- Improved Typing Posture: Type more naturally with a curved, split keyframe and reduce muscle strain on your wrists and forearms thanks to the sloping keyboard design
- Pillowed Wrist Rest: Curved wrist rest with memory foam layer offers typing comfort with 54 per cent more wrist support; 25 per cent less wrist bending compared to standard keyboard without palm rest
- Perfect Stroke Keys: Scooped keys match the shape of your fingertips so you can type with confidence on a wireless keyboard crafted for comfort, precision and fluidity
- Adjustable Palm Lift: Whether seated or standing, keep your wrists in total comfort and a natural typing posture with ergonomically-designed tilt legs of 0, -4 and -7 degrees
- Ergonomist Approved: The ERGO K860 wireless ergonomic keyboard is certified by United States Ergonomics to improve posture and lower muscle strain
Meaningful focus order: WCAG 2.4.3, Level A
When sequential navigation affects meaning or operation, focusable components need to receive focus in an order that preserves both. The sequence does not have to copy the visual layout exactly; it must remain understandable and operable. See WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.4.3, Focus Order.
Visible focus: WCAG 2.4.7, Level AA
There must be at least one mode of operation in which the keyboard focus indicator is visible. A control that receives focus but gives the user no way to tell where focus is does not satisfy this criterion. See WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.4.7, Focus Visible.

How to test a website with a keyboard
Use a keyboard without a mouse to work through the scoped tasks. Follow the browser and operating-system setup the site supports. On some Mac configurations, keyboard navigation to all controls may need to be enabled before the review.
- Start at the page’s beginning. Use Tab to move forward and Shift+Tab to move backward through focusable elements. Note the sequence and whether it makes sense for the task.
- Watch the focus indicator. At every step, check whether you can clearly identify the focused control.
- Operate each task. Try to reach and activate every control needed to complete the task, including options or changes that might otherwise depend on pointer hover.
- Check menus and choices. In dropdown controls, verify that keyboard users can move through choices without an automatic selection or navigation preventing access to the others.
- Check both directions and exits. Move backward as well as forward, and confirm that a user can leave interactive areas using the expected keyboard controls.
These manual checks follow W3C’s Easy Checks – A First Review of Web Accessibility. W3C describes them as preliminary checks: passing them is not a full WCAG evaluation or a guarantee of conformance.

How to record a keyboard barrier
Make each issue reproducible and actionable. Log the page or template and component, the user task affected, the steps to reproduce, the expected and observed behavior, the relevant WCAG criterion when known, user impact, accountable owner, proposed change, and evidence from retesting.
When the same component appears across many pages, record the shared defect as a root cause and note the affected instances. That makes it possible to assess whether one component fix resolves the repeated problem without losing track of where it occurs.

- Cannot reach or activate a function: assess against WCAG 2.1.1, Keyboard.
- Focus sequence disrupts meaning or operation: assess against WCAG 2.4.3, Focus Order.
- Cannot visually identify the focused control: assess against WCAG 2.4.7, Focus Visible.
- Cannot leave a focused area: record the behavior and investigate the applicable keyboard-trap requirement before assigning a criterion. Confirm current WCAG wording rather than relying on an older reference.
How to prioritize repairs
Prioritize by what a barrier prevents and how widely it occurs. WCAG defines success criteria, not a project-specific ranking formula, deadline, or effort estimate; the following is a practical way to order work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Address blocked tasks and controls first. Prioritize barriers that stop a critical task, prevent access to navigation or core controls, strand focus, or make the active control impossible to identify.
- Look for shared root causes. A defect in a shared component or template may affect many pages, so weigh its reach alongside the impact on any single task.
- Compare implementation factors. For candidate fixes, consider task impact, the number and importance of affected pages, whether the cause is shared or isolated, dependencies and scope, confidence in the proposed solution, and how readily it can be reproduced and retested in supported environments.
How to assign, repair, and verify the work
For each issue, name an owner, place it in a target release or sequence, define an acceptance check, and note dependencies. The acceptance check should describe the user-visible behavior that must work, not only a code change.
Best Value
- Built-in wrist rest and neutral grip supports, cushions, and positions the wrist for comfort and neutral hand alignment.
- Built-in wrist rest supports, cushions, and cradles the wrists.
- Quiet keys mean typing is smooth, easy, and non-disruptive.
- Spill-proof keys make cleanup fast and easy; Meets MIL-STD-810H Method 504.3 Contamination by Fluids testing for resistance to breakdown when exposed to cleaning and disinfecting solvents such as alcohol and bleach for at least 24 hours
- Caps lock, numbers lock, scroll lock, and F-keys are popular features that make typing and navigating easier and more efficient.
- Reproduce the logged failure using the same task and keyboard sequence.
- Implement the change against the identified cause, whether that is a component, template, or one-off behavior.
- Repeat the original keyboard-only task. Confirm that the required function can be reached and operated, focus remains visible, and the sequence still makes sense.
- Check related component states and repeated templates for regressions, then attach the retest evidence to the issue.
A CSS technique is not, by itself, proof of conformance. W3C documents :focus-visible as a technique, but the resulting indicator still has to be genuinely visible. See CSS Technique C45: Using :focus-visible to provide a visible focus indicator. WCAG techniques are examples, not mandatory recipes; another implementation can satisfy a criterion.
When a first review is not enough
Escalate beyond the manual first review when task coverage is incomplete, custom widgets or complex interactions need deeper evaluation, fixes have uncertain effects, or the team needs a fuller conformance assessment. A keyboard-only review can reveal important barriers, but it does not cover every WCAG requirement. Legal obligations also depend on jurisdiction and organizational circumstances; these criteria alone do not determine them.
