You can build a credible history-writing portfolio before you have published clips. Use strong academic, extracurricular, personal, or self-directed work to demonstrate the skills relevant to your next opportunity. Label every piece accurately, explain its context and sources, and make the collection easy to browse and contact you through.
Decide what kind of history writing you want to do
Choose a target before assembling samples: for example, researched features, museum or public-history material, educational content, book reviews, or archival explainers. A focused portfolio lets an editor, client, or employer quickly see how your work fits their needs. UC Davis and Penn Career Services both recommend tailoring portfolio material to its intended audience (UC Davis Career Center; Penn Career Services).

A portfolio is a demonstration of relevant skills, not necessarily a list of work that has appeared in publications. Academic, extracurricular, and personal projects can be useful when they show those skills; UMBC, for instance, lists an excerpt from a paper or report as a possible writing sample (UMBC Career Center).
Choose samples that prove distinct strengths
If you are starting without clips, three to five pieces is a reasonable initial target, not a universal hiring rule. Reedsy recommends that range for beginners and emphasizes relevance and quality over volume (Reedsy). Keep a sample only if it adds something useful: research depth, clear explanation, narrative control, source analysis, or another skill your target work calls for.

If you need new work, create self-assigned pieces that resemble the assignments you hope to receive. Possible forms include a short narrative article based on primary and secondary sources, an explainer of one primary source and its context, or a concise book review. These are practical examples, not prescribed formats. Mark each piece as self-directed and unpublished unless it has actually been published or commissioned.
Give every sample an honest, useful label
Add a brief note alongside each piece so a reader does not have to guess what they are seeing. Include its form or purpose, intended reader, publication status, research focus, and your contribution. If someone else contributed, credit them. UC Davis advises describing source material and identifying which components you contributed where appropriate (UC Davis Career Center).

For history writing, make the evidence inspectable: include enough citations or linked references to show how the claims are supported. There is no single citation style required for every portfolio; follow the editor’s or assignment’s instructions when available. Do not present class work as commissioned writing or an unpublished sample as a published clip.

Use a simple structure: a short introduction, a samples area, and a clear contact route. Group work by topic or format only when doing so helps the reader find a relevant example. If you have several kinds of samples, categories such as narrative history, research explainers, or reviews may help; do not create empty categories just to make the site look larger. Reedsy describes organizing samples by topic or format and recommends a concise landing/about area, samples page, and contact route (Reedsy).

A useful framing note tells readers what the collection is meant to demonstrate and gives each piece enough context to make sense on its own. This is consistent with a broader history-portfolio principle in William Cutler’s American Historical Association article: purpose and structure matter. That article addresses a teaching/course portfolio, not freelance writing clips, so its specific components—such as a syllabus and course narrative—are not a template for a writing portfolio (American Historical Association).
Choose a format that suits how you will share it
| Format | Useful when | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio platform | You want a shareable online collection without building a site from scratch. | Check that its layout and navigation suit your samples and audience; current prices and features vary and are not established here. |
| Personal website | You want more control over the presentation and a central link to share. | You are responsible for keeping pages, links, and contact information working. |
| PDF or printed samples | An application or in-person conversation calls for a compact file or hard copy. | Keep the selection focused and ensure the version you share is current. |
UC Davis recognizes personal websites and platforms such as LinkedIn, GitHub, Tumblr, or WordPress as possible portfolio homes, and notes that a hard copy may be useful for an in-person interview. UMBC likewise advises choosing paper or electronic format based on the need (UC Davis Career Center; UMBC Career Center). Choose for audience fit and ease of sharing rather than assuming one format is required.

- Replace weaker work as stronger samples become available, while keeping labels and publication status accurate.

Use the portfolio alongside your application
A portfolio supports your application; it does not replace a resume. Andrew Fennell, identified by Penn Career Services as a former recruiter and director at StandOut CV, puts it this way: “An online portfolio shouldn’t typically be seen as a substitute for a resume” (Penn Career Services). Share the portfolio where samples are requested or relevant, and keep the rest of your application materials in place.
