Next.js then handles routes, performance, metadata, previews, and deployment independently of the WordPress theme.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
A production-ready implementation needs more than a fetch call: define the content model, keep API credentials on the server, choose an appropriate rendering and cache strategy, protect draft previews, configure media handling, and plan for API bursts. The sequence below takes you from an empty WordPress installation to a deployable Next.js frontend.

Understand the headless architecture
In a traditional WordPress site, WordPress stores content and also renders the HTML theme. In a headless setup, WordPress still stores posts, pages, media, taxonomies, users, and editorial metadata, but it does not serve the visitor-facing interface. Next.js requests the content and renders the experience.
This separation gives the two systems independent scaling and release cycles. Editors can continue working in the WordPress admin while developers build a React-based interface with the Next.js App Router, server components, route-level loading states, and modern deployment options.

What happens during a page request
- An editor publishes or updates content in WordPress.
- The WordPress REST API or WPGraphQL exposes that content.
- Next.js fetches the required records on the server, or serves a previously generated and cached response.
- The Next.js route renders the page, including metadata, images, and sanitized rich text.
- A webhook or timed revalidation refreshes the page after a change, without rebuilding the whole site.

| Preview | Draft content and authenticated editorial state | Protected preview route and draft rendering |
Prepare WordPress
Provision the CMS and content model
Start with a WordPress installation that editors can access. Define the post types, taxonomies, fields, and relationships before writing frontend code. A small site may need only posts and pages; a larger project might expose products, authors, events, or documentation as custom post types.
Confirm that the public REST API responds for the content you intend to publish. If you choose WPGraphQL, install and activate the WPGraphQL plugin and verify that its GraphQL endpoint is available. The standard endpoint is /graphql on the WordPress origin.

- Give each public content type a stable slug.
- Make custom post types available to the selected API.
- Expose taxonomies and fields required for navigation, filtering, and metadata.
- Decide which media sizes the frontend will request.
- Keep administration, user data, and authenticated operations out of browser-facing requests.
Check the API before building Next.js
Open a public REST collection endpoint or run a minimal GraphQL query. Check that the response contains the expected slug, title, publication status, body, featured image, and taxonomy information. Fix permissions, plugin configuration, or custom-field exposure in WordPress first; otherwise those problems are harder to distinguish from frontend bugs.
Create the Next.js application
Use the official create-next-app starter and choose the App Router. TypeScript is useful for describing API responses, although JavaScript works as well.
npx create-next-app@latest headless-wp
cd headless-wp
npm run dev
The development server normally runs at http://localhost:3000. Keep the WordPress origin in a server-side environment variable. With WPGraphQL, the value is usually the complete endpoint ending in /graphql; with REST, use the relevant API base URL.
WORDPRESS_API_URL=https://cms.example.com/graphql
Place the value in a local environment file that is excluded from source control. Do not prefix it with NEXT_PUBLIC_ when it is intended only for server-side data access. Configure the same variable in the hosting provider’s production and preview environments.

Choose REST or WPGraphQL
Both APIs can power a Next.js site. The right choice depends on the content model, existing integrations, and the team’s tooling rather than on a universal performance rule.

| Decision point | REST API | WPGraphQL |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Straightforward resources and projects that already use WordPress REST integrations | Frontends needing nested, selective queries across related content |
| Query shape | Multiple resource endpoints and query parameters | A schema-driven query that requests only selected fields |
| Type and schema tooling | Usually inferred or documented separately | Schema introspection and GraphQL tooling |
| Dependencies | Built into WordPress, subject to the exposure of each content type | Requires the WPGraphQL plugin and any extensions needed by the content model |
| Caching considerations | Cache each resource request and pagination response | Cache query results and avoid repeatedly issuing large, uncached queries |
| Team familiarity | Often easier for teams already using HTTP endpoints | Preferable when the team is comfortable with GraphQL schemas and fragments |
Use REST when resource boundaries are simple
REST is a practical starting point for pages, posts, and media when each screen can be assembled from a small number of predictable endpoints. It also avoids adding a plugin when the site’s existing integrations already depend on REST.
Use WPGraphQL for related, selective data
WPGraphQL is useful when one page needs nested author, taxonomy, media, and custom-field data. A schema makes those relationships explicit and lets the frontend request a precise selection. Test the resulting queries against realistic content volumes and cache them at the application or hosting layer.
Build a server-side data layer
Keep API calls in server components, route handlers, or a dedicated data module. Do not fetch private WordPress data directly from browser components.
GraphQL request example
const endpoint = process.env.WORDPRESS_API_URL;
const query = `
query PostBySlug($slug: ID!) {
post(id: $slug, idType: SLUG) {
databaseId
title
slug
date
content
featuredImage {
node {
sourceUrl
altText
}
}
}
}
`;
export async function getPost(slug) {
const response = await fetch(endpoint, {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({ query, variables: { slug } }),
next: { revalidate: 60 }
});
if (!response.ok) throw new Error('WordPress request failed');
const payload = await response.json();
if (payload.errors?.length) throw new Error('GraphQL query failed');
return payload.data.post;
}
The one-minute value is an example. Set a period that matches how quickly published changes must appear, or omit timed revalidation when every request must be live. Handle an absent post as a not-found result rather than allowing an undefined object to reach the component.
REST request example
export async function getPost(slug) {
const url = `${process.env.WORDPRESS_API_URL}/wp/v2/posts?slug=${encodeURIComponent(slug)}&_embed`;
const response = await fetch(url, { next: { revalidate: 60 } });
if (!response.ok) throw new Error('WordPress request failed');
const posts = await response.json();
return posts[0] ?? null;
}
For REST, add pagination for collections and request only the fields or embedded records your endpoint supports. For either API, centralize error handling, response validation, and cache options so every route follows the same policy.
Render content with the App Router
Create route segments that mirror the public URL structure. A blog route might be app/blog/[slug]/page.tsx. The page can load the record in a server component and return a not-found response when the slug does not exist.
import { notFound } from 'next/navigation';
import { getPost } from '@/lib/wordpress';
export default async function PostPage({ params }) {
const post = await getPost(params.slug);
if (!post) notFound();
return (
<article>
<h1>{post.title}</h1>
<div className="prose" dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: sanitize(post.content) }} />
</article>
);
}
Rich text from WordPress is HTML supplied by an external system. Sanitize it, or transform known blocks into React components, before using dangerouslySetInnerHTML. Do not assume that editor-entered markup is safe merely because it came from your CMS.

Add loading, error, and not-found states
loading.tsxcan show a skeleton while a server-rendered segment resolves.error.tsxcan offer a retry action when the WordPress origin fails.not-found.tsxshould explain that a page is unavailable and return the appropriate not-found response.
Generate metadata from WordPress
Use the post title, excerpt, canonical slug, and featured image to build route metadata. Keep fallback metadata for records that lack an SEO field. Validate title and description lengths in the content workflow rather than silently emitting empty tags.
Configure WordPress images and media
Next.js image optimization requires permission for remote image hosts. Add the WordPress media hostname to next.config.js or next.config.mjs using the remote-pattern configuration supported by your Next.js version.
const nextConfig = {
images: {
remotePatterns: [
{
protocol: 'https',
hostname: 'cms.example.com',
pathname: '/wp-content/uploads/**'
}
]
}
};
export default nextConfig;
Use the actual media host, including a separate hostname if a CDN serves uploads. Store the WordPress alternative text and provide a meaningful fallback only when the CMS record has none. Avoid requesting full-size originals for every card; map image sizes to their display context.
Implement draft preview safely
Published pages can use cached data, but editors need a way to inspect drafts before publication. The preview flow should be a protected, authenticated path that enables Next.js draft mode and then redirects to the requested slug.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPreview flow
- Create a long, random preview secret and store it in a server-side environment variable.
- Configure the WordPress preview link or editorial integration to call a Next.js preview route with the secret and a validated post identifier.
- In the route handler, compare the supplied secret server-side. Reject missing or incorrect values before making any WordPress request.
- Enable Next.js draft mode and fetch the draft with authenticated credentials that never reach the browser.
- Redirect to the draft’s normal public path. Components should detect draft mode and disable or shorten normal caching.
- Provide an explicit way to leave preview mode and return to the published cache.
Never put WordPress application passwords, cookies, or preview secrets in client-side JavaScript. Restrict preview routes with rate limiting where possible and log rejected attempts without recording secrets.
Keep published content current with ISR
Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) lets Next.js serve generated pages while refreshing them after a configured interval. It avoids rebuilding every page for each content edit and reduces repeated load on WordPress.
Set revalidation on the relevant fetch, route, or segment. Short intervals improve freshness but increase origin requests; long intervals reduce load but delay changes. Use timed revalidation for routine updates and on-demand revalidation for publication events that must propagate quickly.

Trigger on-demand revalidation from WordPress
- Create a private Next.js route that accepts a POST request.
- Require a webhook secret in a header or signed payload.
- Read the changed post type and slug from the event, validating both before acting.
- Call the appropriate path or tag revalidation function.
- Return a success response only after the invalidation call completes, and log failures for retry.
Configure the WordPress webhook to call this endpoint after a successful publish or update. If an event contains several related paths, invalidate the listing, taxonomy, author, and detail pages affected by the change. A webhook is not a substitute for cache correctness: retain a timed fallback in case delivery fails.
Choose a rendering strategy
| Strategy | Freshness | Build and origin impact | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full static generation | Changes appear after a rebuild | Large builds can become slow; runtime origin traffic is low | Content changes rarely and the page set is manageable |
| ISR | Timed or on-demand updates without a full rebuild | Balanced build time and origin load; cache configuration matters | Most published editorial sites with many pages |
| Fully dynamic rendering | Can reflect each request | Highest request-time work and WordPress dependency | Personalized or highly time-sensitive content that cannot be cached |
Many sites combine these approaches: ISR for articles and landing pages, dynamic rendering for account-specific screens, and client-side requests only for genuinely interactive data.
Deploy the Next.js frontend
Managed Next.js deployment
A managed Next.js platform can build from your repository, provide a global CDN, and expose separate environment variables for preview and production. The documented WordPress starter flow is to install WPGraphQL, start from the cms-wordpress example, set WORDPRESS_API_URL, run the development server, and deploy with that variable configured.
Check that the production environment can reach the WordPress origin, that preview variables are not accidentally used in production, and that webhook requests target the deployed production URL.
Self-hosting on Node.js or Docker
Next.js documents Node.js as the minimum deployment runtime. A single next start process supports server components and ISR. A Docker deployment can place the Next.js process behind a reverse proxy and CDN, but you must operate TLS, logging, health checks, image caching, secrets, and updates.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Multiple instances require shared cache coordination. Without a shared cache or consistent invalidation mechanism, one instance may regenerate a page while another continues serving stale data. Design this before adding horizontal replicas.
Deployment checklist
- Set
WORDPRESS_API_URLand every preview or webhook secret in the correct environment. - Allow the frontend host to load approved WordPress media domains.
- Confirm WordPress permits requests from the deployment environment.
- Test a published page, a missing slug, a draft preview, and a revalidation event.
- Verify that server logs do not print credentials or private API responses.
- Measure origin response time, cache-hit rate, failed builds, and revalidation errors.
Prevent API overload as the site grows
Large uncached bursts can consume WordPress PHP workers or trigger rate limiting. HTTP 429 responses mean the origin is asking the client to reduce concurrent or repeated requests.
Best Value
Protect the WordPress origin
- Cache identical requests and avoid fetching the same record separately in nested components.
- Paginate archive queries instead of requesting an entire collection.
- Bound concurrency when generating many pages or importing content.
- Use incremental generation rather than eagerly generating every possible route.
- Prefer the standard
/graphqlendpoint for WPGraphQL handling, and keep queries narrowly scoped. - Retry transient failures with backoff, not an immediate request loop.
Protect the public application
Return a useful error state when WordPress is unavailable and let cached pages continue serving where possible. Set request timeouts, validate response shapes, and distinguish a genuine not-found result from an origin failure. Monitor the ratio of cache hits to misses so a configuration change does not silently turn every visitor into an uncached WordPress request.
Troubleshoot common failures
The API variable is undefined
Check the variable name, environment file location, and deployment environment. Restart the development server after changing local variables. Keep server-only variables out of client components.
Recommended Free Tools
Pages return 404 although content exists
Confirm that the slug is being queried with the correct identifier type, that the post is published for a non-preview request, and that the custom post type is exposed through the selected API. Log the normalized slug and API status, not credentials.
Images fail to render
Compare the image hostname and path with the remote-pattern configuration. Check whether uploads use a different CDN host, whether the URL is HTTP while the site is HTTPS, and whether the origin permits the optimizer to fetch the file.
Draft preview shows the published version
Verify the secret check, draft-mode cookie, and authenticated WordPress request. Make sure the preview branch does not reuse a public cache entry and that the post identifier resolves to the draft record.
Updates remain stale after publishing
Inspect the webhook response, the route or tag passed to revalidation, and the cache layer in front of Next.js. Keep a timed revalidation fallback so a missed event eventually expires the old response.
WordPress returns HTTP 429
Reduce parallel requests, add caching and pagination, and avoid regenerating the same route repeatedly. Investigate which build, crawler, or webhook process is creating the burst before increasing origin capacity.
Quick Recap
Recommended build sequence
- Model the WordPress content and expose only the required records.
- Choose REST or WPGraphQL based on query complexity and team experience.
- Create the Next.js App Router project and set the server-side API variable.
- Implement one content query with validation and caching.
- Add dynamic routes, metadata, sanitized content, and image configuration.
- Introduce loading, error, and not-found states before adding more templates.
- Implement protected draft preview and test it with an unpublished record.
- Add ISR, then connect a secured webhook for on-demand revalidation.
- Deploy, test production environment variables, and verify cache behavior.
- Load-test archive generation and monitor 429 responses, origin latency, cache hits, and failed revalidations.
