How to Build a Google Maps Scraper—And What to Do Instead

Google Maps scraping for an external database conflicts with Maps Platform terms. Use Places API within a compliant application or choose data licensed for reuse.

You should not build a scraper that exports Google Maps listings, reviews, map tiles, or other Maps content into an external database. Google Maps Platform’s terms prohibit extracting or scraping Maps content for use outside its services. If you need place information inside an application, use the official Places API under its policies; if you need a reusable directory or dataset, use data whose license permits that use.

This is guidance on Google’s platform terms, not a jurisdiction-specific legal opinion. The rules that govern a project can depend on its region and other circumstances.

What Google Maps scraping includes—and why the distinction matters

“Google Maps scraper” can mean anything from a tool that copies business listings into a spreadsheet to a program that downloads map imagery. Google’s Maps Platform terms say: “Customer will not export, extract, or otherwise scrape Google Maps Content for use outside the Services.” The terms give examples including pre-fetching, indexing, storing, resharing, or rehosting content outside the services; bulk downloads of map tiles, Street View imagery, geocodes, routes, and Places information; and copying or saving business names, addresses, or reviews. Read the Google Maps Platform Terms of Service, section 3.2.3(a).

  • Building an external listings database: copying place names, addresses, reviews, or other Maps content for a directory, spreadsheet, or analytics dataset falls within the examples Google identifies.
  • Bulk downloading map content: Google’s FAQ says tiles and satellite imagery may not be accessed through a mechanism outside Google Maps Platform, including a script that downloads tiles in bulk. See the Google Maps Platform FAQ.
  • Indexing or rehosting: saving Maps content for later retrieval or republishing it elsewhere is not made permissible just because the data was publicly visible in a browser.

Accordingly, this guide does not provide instructions for scraping endpoints, intercepting browser traffic, downloading tiles, bypassing bot checks, or evading access controls. A Places API key is not permission to create a permanent external directory from Google’s results.

Use Places API for place information inside an application

For an application that needs to help its users find or understand places, the official route is Places API (New), used according to its documentation and policies. This is an application integration, not a workaround for exporting Google Maps content. Start with the user-facing feature you need, then choose the supported API operation and only the response fields that feature requires. Consult the current Places API (New) documentation and Places API policies for operation-specific requirements.

  1. Define the in-product need. For example, determine whether users need to search for places or see place details as part of a Google Maps-powered application. Do not frame the integration as a bulk export.
  2. Select an operation and fields from the current API docs. Request only the information needed for the feature. Verify current field, response, and billing requirements in the documentation before implementation.
  3. Protect credentials. Restrict API keys to the applications and APIs that need them, keep server-side secrets out of client code where appropriate, and monitor project access and usage.
  4. Present results under the display rules. If Places content is shown on a map, Google requires it to be shown on a Google Map with the prescribed attribution. If content is shown without a Google Map, attribution requirements still apply. Follow the policy’s applicable display and attribution instructions.
  5. Provide required public policies. The Places policy requires publicly accessible terms of use and a privacy policy that incorporate Google’s terms and privacy policy. Check the policy for the precise requirements that apply to your application.
  6. Review what you retain. Do not cache or keep Places fields unless the applicable terms and policy permit it; the place-ID exception is narrow, as described below.

The official API route is for a compliant application that presents place information to its users. It does not grant a general right to assemble, retain, or redistribute a Google-derived business database.

What you may store: the place-ID exception is narrow

Google’s Places API policy exempts place_id from caching restrictions and permits it to be stored indefinitely. That exception applies to place IDs specifically; it should not be extended to names, addresses, reviews, or other place fields. For any other data, check the current caching and storage rules in the Places API policies before deciding whether, and for how long, your application may retain it.

For a reusable directory, use data licensed for that purpose

If the deliverable is an exportable business directory, lead list, or analytics dataset, choose an independent provider or public dataset whose license expressly allows your intended collection, storage, use, and redistribution. Before relying on a source, check:

  • Permitted purpose: whether commercial use, lead generation, analytics, or another intended use is allowed.
  • Storage and reuse: whether you may retain records, refresh them, combine them with other sources, or use them after a subscription ends.
  • Redistribution: whether you may publish, sell, or share the resulting dataset.
  • Coverage and provenance: whether the source covers your target geography and explains where its records come from.
  • Freshness and attribution: how often data is updated and what attribution or other notices are required.
  • Cost and limits: what the provider charges and any usage, export, or rate limits.

These are selection criteria, not endorsements of any particular dataset vendor. Confirm the license and terms for the specific source and intended use rather than assuming that public availability means unrestricted reuse.

Review before launch

  • Read the live Maps Platform terms and the policies for the exact API and fields your application uses.
  • Check which regional terms apply to your project. Google identifies EEA-specific terms for customers with an EEA billing address, subject to an exception for certain integrations created before July 8, 2025 that remain unmodified. Verify the governing terms for your actual project in the current terms.
  • Confirm the required map display, attribution, terms-of-use, and privacy-policy treatment.
  • Keep only data the applicable rules allow you to retain, and do not treat API access as permission to export Maps content.
  • Check current project billing and terms before deployment; Google’s terms and pricing may change.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Google Maps data scraper or a way around Maps Platform terms. It can take a screenshot of a page you are permitted to capture, but it does not authorize extracting Google Maps content for reuse. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Places API results to build a permanent business directory?

No general export right follows from API access. The terms prohibit scraping Maps content for use outside the services; the place-ID storage exception does not apply to other place fields.

Can I download Google Maps tiles or satellite imagery with a script?

Google’s FAQ says tiles and satellite imagery may not be accessed through mechanisms outside Google Maps Platform, including bulk tile-download scripts.

Do EEA projects follow the same terms as every other project?

Google identifies EEA-specific terms for customers with an EEA billing address, with an exception for certain pre-July 8, 2025 integrations that remain unmodified. Confirm the terms applicable to your project.
