A budget gaming setup is the complete cost of playing—not just the PC or console. Include the gaming system, display, input devices, audio, furniture, games, and any software or connectivity you still need. The right plan depends on your platform, target games, country, total budget, and equipment you already own.
Set the budget for the whole setup
First decide whether your budget covers a complete setup or only the gaming machine. A desktop PC price does not necessarily include a monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, or even the operating system. A console or handheld may reduce the need for a desk-based collection of accessories, but you still need to account for its screen, audio, games, and any missing essentials.

Make a list of what you own and what you actually need. Price the missing pieces together with the system, using the same scope when comparing options. At checkout, include local taxes, shipping, cables, storage, software requirements, and any peripherals that are not included. Prices and availability vary by country, so there is no single setup price that is best for everyone.
Use what already works
Keep a compatible monitor or television, keyboard, mouse, headset, desk, or chair if it meets your needs. Replace something only when it limits the games you play, is incompatible, or is uncomfortable or unreliable. A coordinated look, RGB lighting, or branded furniture is a lower priority than a system and display that suit your games.

Choose a buying route that fits your space and effort
Handheld gaming PCs, prebuilt desktops, and DIY desktops solve different problems. Compare their complete delivered cost, included screen and accessories, performance needs, space, portability, upgrade options, assembly effort, support, warranty, and compatibility with the games you want.

Allocate a PC budget around the games you play
For a gaming PC, HP’s 2026 hardware guide recommends putting about 35–40% of the gaming-PC budget toward the GPU. Treat that as HP’s rule of thumb, not a universal formula or a guarantee of performance. It is guidance for the computer budget, not automatically 35–40% of the cost of a complete setup.

Leave enough of the PC budget for a compatible CPU, motherboard, memory, storage, power supply, case, and cooling. Then account separately for the display and any peripherals or software you still need. HP also describes entry-level PCs as targeting 1080p gaming at 60+ FPS for most AAA titles; this is HP’s tier description, not an independently verified benchmark or a promise that every entry-level PC will achieve it.

Choose a monitor or television based on your platform, games, and preferred experience. Compare resolution, refresh rate, screen size, connection compatibility, and price as a group. A display with specifications your system or games cannot use may consume budget without improving your experience. Conversely, a display that is incompatible or fails to meet your intended use can hold back the setup.

Apply the same test to peripherals: keep the keyboard, mouse, controller, or headset you already have if it works for your platform and games. Buy a replacement to fix a specific problem—not simply because it is marketed as gaming gear. Set aside money for games and any required software or connectivity rather than spending the entire budget on hardware.

- Write down your cap and scope. Decide whether the number covers only a gaming machine or the complete setup, and note your country and currency.
- List the games and platform. Identify the games you expect to play and whether you prefer a handheld, console-style experience, or desktop setup.
- Inventory existing gear. Mark each item as usable, incompatible, or in need of replacement. Do not budget to replace usable equipment by default.
- Price complete options. For each route, add the system, required display and peripherals, games, software, shipping, taxes, and any missing components. Compare options with the same scope.
- Check compatibility and support. Confirm that the system supports your games and intended display, and understand what is included, what you must add, and how support and warranties work.
- Defer nonessential upgrades. Buy only what enables the setup you need now. Revisit appearance upgrades or performance improvements when a real limitation appears.

Check live local prices and the complete bill before committing; a prebuilt may be competitive with a comparable DIY build in some market conditions, but neither route is always the cheapest.
