Start with broad exposure across sectors and asset classes, then check what you actually own across all funds and direct shares. Sectoral and thematic funds can add focused exposure, but they are not substitutes for a broad portfolio.
Start with your financial plan, not a sector list
There is no single sector mix that suits every investor. Your objectives, investment horizon, need for access to cash, existing investments and tolerance for losses all affect what is appropriate. Decide what the portfolio needs to do before choosing funds or sectors.

Think about diversification on two levels:
- Across asset classes: how much exposure is in equity and how much, if any, is in fixed income or other permitted asset classes.
- Within equity: how much exposure is spread across sectors, companies and investment themes.
A portfolio can hold many shares yet remain concentrated if those companies respond to the same economic or sector-specific risks. Likewise, several funds may own many of the same shares.
Choose building blocks by what they actually hold
Fund labels are a starting point, not proof of diversification. Read each scheme’s mandate and current portfolio disclosures to understand the breadth and concentration of its holdings.
#1 Best Overall
| Building block | What it can contribute | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Broad-market diversified equity fund | Equity exposure across multiple sectors, subject to the fund’s mandate. | Check the scheme’s actual sector and company weights, benchmark and overlap with your other holdings. |
| Sectoral fund | Focused exposure to one sector, such as banking or healthcare. | Several companies do not remove the risk of depending on one sector. AMFI says sectoral funds limit diversification and are riskier; it also notes that sector performance can be cyclical. AMFI’s scheme-category guidance and SEBI Investor’s explanation describe this concentration risk. |
| Thematic fund | Exposure to companies in different industries linked by a common theme; AMFI describes thematic funds as more diversified than sectoral funds. | The theme can still create correlated exposure, so a thematic fund does not guarantee broad market or asset-class diversification. Review the scheme mandate and holdings. AMFI and SEBI Investor explain the distinction. |
| Balanced or hybrid fund | Combines equities and fixed income, providing exposure across asset classes within one scheme. SEBI Investor’s balanced-fund guide explains this structure. | Check the scheme’s mandate and actual equity and fixed-income mix; the label alone does not establish that it suits your needs. |
Map your whole portfolio before adding a fund
Make one inventory of your mutual funds and direct shares. For each holding, note the sectors and companies represented, then look for concentrations and duplicates. Assess the portfolio as a whole rather than assuming each fund diversifies the others.
- Collect current holdings. Use the latest portfolio disclosures for each scheme and your own records for direct shares.
- Group exposures. Compare the sector weights and identify companies appearing in more than one fund or in both funds and direct holdings.
- Look through the fund names. A banking fund and a broad equity fund may both have financial-sector exposure; a thematic fund may overlap with several industries already represented.
- Check the asset mix. Note the portfolio’s equity and fixed-income exposure, including any mix held inside hybrid funds.
- Decide whether a proposed holding changes the portfolio. If it mostly repeats existing exposures, it may add little diversification even if it is a new fund.
SEBI’s May 2025 deployment table illustrates why this look-through matters: banks accounted for 20.91% and finance for 6.54% of equity-fund AUM in the table’s reported sector classifications. These are dated aggregate figures, not suggested weights for an individual investor, and the table includes derivatives and an “others” category. See SEBI’s May 2025 equity-fund deployment report.

Evaluate focused exposure as a deliberate risk
A sectoral fund can own several companies and still leave you dependent on one sector. AMFI puts it plainly: “Since these funds focus on just one sector of the economy, they limit diversification, and are thus riskier.” SEBI Investor likewise describes sectoral funds as focusing on one sector and highlights the risk of dependence on that sector.
Thematic funds may span industries, but the companies can still share a common driver. Holding several thematic funds does not necessarily solve that problem if their themes or underlying companies overlap. Consider a focused fund only after checking how much of the total portfolio it represents and what risk it adds relative to your existing holdings.

Compare schemes using current documents
The official investor guidance explains fund categories, but it does not rank named schemes or establish their current costs or returns. Before selecting a specific scheme, use its current scheme documents and portfolio disclosures to compare:
- the mandate and permitted breadth of holdings;
- sector, company and theme concentration;
- overlap with your other funds and direct shares;
- equity, fixed-income and other permitted asset-class exposure;
- total costs, benchmark, liquidity and approach to rebalancing.
Do not infer a personal target allocation from market-wide fund weights or from an example sector mix. The SEBI figures above describe an aggregate snapshot, not a suitability recommendation. For an allocation tailored to your circumstances, consult an appropriately qualified adviser.
