Start with a focused GitHub profile and a small set of role-relevant projects; add a separate live website when seeing the work in a browser helps explain it.
What a developer portfolio should help a visitor understand
A useful portfolio presents evidence: what you built, what you contributed, and where someone can inspect the result. It may be a well-organized GitHub profile, a separate portfolio website, or both. GitHub says a profile link can showcase skills and experience to potential employers, but its guidance does not establish that a particular portfolio format leads to more hiring success.

Choose the work around the role or role family you are pursuing. A focused selection makes it easier to connect your projects to the kind of development you want to do; an unfiltered archive can make that connection harder to see.
How to build a developer portfolio website—or start with GitHub
You do not need a separate website before you can present your work. A GitHub profile can serve as a landing page, with a concise bio, a profile README, and selected repositories. GitHub says the profile README appears at the top of the profile; see GitHub’s profile documentation.

A separate site gives you more control over presentation and can show projects running in a browser. It also means creating and maintaining another site. These paths are compatible: use GitHub for code and collaboration evidence, and a website when a live demonstration or a more tailored presentation is useful.
| Consideration | GitHub profile and repositories | Separate live portfolio site |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor effort | Works well when the profile, pinned repositories, and project documentation supply enough context. | Lets you organize projects and explanations around the visitor’s path through the site. |
| Code visibility | Visitors can inspect repositories and contributions. | Code visibility depends on what you link or include; a site can point visitors to repositories. |
| Live demonstration | A repository can link to a working website when one exists. | Can present live project views directly. |
| Presentation control | Uses GitHub’s profile and repository structure. | Offers more control over the site’s layout and presentation. |
| Maintenance | Requires keeping profile details and selected repositories clear and current. | Requires building and maintaining the additional site as well as its project links. |
GitHub’s guidance supports selecting projects relevant to a particular job search; it does not compare the hiring outcomes of these two presentation paths.

What should a GitHub portfolio include for a developer job?
A concise profile bio and README
Use the bio to say what kind of development work you do and what role you are seeking. In the profile README, introduce yourself and provide the context a visitor needs: relevant skills, experience, selected projects, and achievements where appropriate. Keep the introduction short enough that the projects remain easy to find.

A focused set of pinned repositories
GitHub recommends pinning three to five projects that show diverse skills relevant to the specific job search. Treat that as platform guidance, not a universal hiring rule or a guarantee. Include open-source contributions when they accurately represent your experience; GitHub notes that they can highlight collaboration. For the official recommendations, see Using your GitHub profile to enhance your resume.

Enough context to assess each project
For each selected repository, add a short description that explains what the project is and what a visitor can inspect. Link to a working website if one exists, and add topic tags that help describe the repository. A demo is useful when it gives someone a direct view of the project, but not every project needs to be deployed.
- Use descriptive filenames and consistent code style.
- Document complex or important code so its purpose is understandable.
- Maintain tests where appropriate.
- Make the repository itself navigable, not just the profile page that links to it.
Publish a live portfolio with GitHub Pages
GitHub Pages hosts static sites built from HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in a repository, and can optionally run a build process. It supports a GitHub-hosted address and a custom domain. The GitHub Pages overview explains the service and its publishing model.

- ORGANIZATION: A built-in 5-tab expanding file folder makes color-coded subject organization effortless. Perfect for busy students managing multiple classes.
- SPACIOUS & SMART DESIGN: 3-inch O-rings and 600-sheet capacity.
- ALL-IN-ONE STORAGE: Multiple interior and exterior zippered pockets provide a secure place for pens, pencils, small personal items, and more. No more digging through backpacks.
- EASY-CARRY HANDLE: Built-in handle makes it easy to grab and go — no backpack required.
- QUALITY: Made from durable ripstop material, this binder resists wear and tear, standing up to even the toughest school days.
Use a GitHub-hosted address if it meets your needs. A custom domain is optional, and access to Pages depends on the plan and repository visibility. If you choose a custom domain, GitHub recommends verifying it before adding it to a Pages repository; that step helps improve security and prevent takeover attacks. Check the current conditions in GitHub’s custom-domain documentation.

A practical build sequence
- Choose the target role. Decide which role or related group of roles the portfolio is meant to support, then select work that demonstrates relevant skills.
- Write the profile bio. State your development focus and the role you are seeking in a few clear words.
- Create the profile README. Add an introduction, relevant skills and experience, selected projects, and achievements where they help explain your work.
- Pin three to five relevant repositories. Choose a mix of your own work and open-source contributions only where it accurately reflects your experience.
- Make each repository legible. Add a concise description, explain what visitors can inspect, include a live website link if one exists, and apply useful topic tags.
- Improve the project itself. Use descriptive filenames and consistent style, document complex or important code, and maintain tests where appropriate.
- Add a separate site only if it helps. If browser-based demonstrations or a custom presentation are useful, publish a static site, such as through GitHub Pages. Choose its GitHub-hosted address or configure a custom domain based on your needs.
- Link to the work from your resume. Add the GitHub profile or portfolio site so a hiring contact can reach the projects directly.
GitHub Docs advises: “For the best chances at an interview, pick projects that show your diverse skills and are relevant to your specific job search.” That is GitHub’s platform advice, not evidence that following the recommendation causes an interview.
