Build it as a controlled pipeline: capture scoped interaction events, extract and maintain a small set of durable memories, retrieve only what is relevant to the current issue, and ground the response in current support documentation. Memory should inform an answer, not replace identity checks, permissions, or authoritative product policies.
Here, “SupportIQ” means a reference architecture for that kind of agent—not a specific, tested product. The design below separates three kinds of information that are easy to conflate: conversation history, customer-specific memory, and shared support knowledge.

What persistent memory should—and should not—remember
Session history records what happened
Session history is the record of interaction events: customer and agent messages, tool actions, ticket identifiers, and outcomes. It is useful for reconstructing a particular conversation or extracting information after the live exchange. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Memory documentation describes short-term memory in terms of raw interaction events and structured details.

Long-term memory preserves useful customer context
Long-term memory is a smaller, maintained set of facts that may help in a later conversation: a confirmed preference, an unresolved issue, a prior resolution, or a detail the customer should not have to repeat. It is not simply a transcript copied into a permanent store. AgentCore Memory describes extracting and consolidating long-term records asynchronously, including in a customer-support example.

A knowledge base holds shared, authoritative answers
Product instructions, current policies, troubleshooting procedures, and runbooks belong in maintained knowledge sources, not in one customer’s memory. Retrieve those sources separately, with their own access controls. Microsoft Foundry’s support-memory architecture explicitly distinguishes memory from knowledge sources. If a remembered answer conflicts with a current policy article, the current authoritative source should govern the response.
A vector database is a possible storage or retrieval component, not a complete memory design. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) describes a pattern of retrieving external information to inform a model’s response; it does not by itself decide what customer facts are eligible for retention, how corrections work, or how deletion reaches derived data. A dedicated memory service can provide APIs or lifecycle features, while an application-managed design gives the team direct responsibility for those controls.
How a persistent-memory support flow works
Keep memory work out of the critical response path where possible. The customer-facing agent should be able to respond using the current message, permitted context, and authoritative support material even if background memory extraction is delayed or unavailable.

- Capture relevant events. Record the interaction details needed for continuity, such as the customer and tenant scope, conversation or ticket reference, relevant turns, tool actions, and outcome. Apply data-minimization rules at capture time rather than assuming every transcript detail should become durable.
- Extract candidate memories asynchronously. After the live exchange, identify a small number of potentially useful facts, preferences, unresolved cases, and outcomes. Treat model-generated candidates as unverified until your application’s rules or a human review process establish their status.
- Consolidate, do not just append. Update an existing record when a fact has changed, mark superseded information, and avoid accumulating duplicate transcript fragments. AWS documents an extraction-and-consolidation pattern for AgentCore Memory; the particular review and conflict-resolution rules remain an application design choice.
- Preserve provenance and scope. As an implementation recommendation, store enough metadata to tell which customer and tenant a record belongs to, where it came from, when it was captured, whether it is verified or uncertain, and when it should be reviewed or removed. These fields are a practical way to implement governance and traceability; they are not a vendor-mandated schema.
- Retrieve for the current issue. At the start of a new support interaction, identify the customer using the service’s approved identity process, then retrieve only memories authorized for that customer and relevant to the issue. Claude’s memory-tool documentation describes a just-in-time pattern in which the agent reads needed memory rather than loading everything at once; AgentCore Memory documents semantic retrieval.
- Retrieve support knowledge separately. Search current product documentation, policies, and troubleshooting guidance independently from customer history. Apply the knowledge source’s own versioning and permissions, and use the current authoritative result when older conversation content differs.
- Give the agent bounded context. Pass retrieved memories as contextual evidence, with provenance and status where useful. Instruct the agent to distinguish remembered customer information from verified policy, to ask when a material detail is uncertain, and not to expose unrelated personal history.
- Authorize actions independently. A memory that says a customer previously received a refund or changed an account setting is not authorization to repeat that action. Check identity, permissions, business rules, and tool-specific safeguards before changing an account, issuing a refund, or taking another consequential action. Escalate when those checks cannot be satisfied.
Choose a storage and retrieval approach
There is no head-to-head benchmark in the cited product documentation that establishes one approach as best. Choose based on the data lifecycle and operational controls the support service needs, not on whether a product calls itself “memory.”

| Approach | What it does | Best fit and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Application-managed memory | Your application owns the records, extraction workflow, retrieval, access controls, and lifecycle operations. | Offers direct control over storage and deletion behavior, but the team must build and operate those controls. Claude’s memory-tool pattern has the application execute file operations and manage the memory store. |
| Managed agent-memory service | A provider supplies memory APIs and may handle extraction, consolidation, or retrieval features. | Can reduce implementation work, but requires review of data handling, retention, access scope, availability, and vendor dependence. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Memory documents short-term events, asynchronously maintained long-term records, and semantic retrieval. |
| Conversation-state or scoped-profile features | A platform represents conversation history and/or context in scoped profiles or namespaces. | Check exactly what is isolated and how scope is enforced. Cloudflare’s Agent Memory documentation describes isolated profiles; its Agents SDK documentation distinguishes conversation history from context memory. The cited Agent Memory page labels the feature private beta, and the conversation-state page labels relevant APIs experimental. |
Other documented examples illustrate different product approaches rather than a ranking: Microsoft Foundry describes support memories such as prior issues, resolutions, ticket numbers, and preferred contact method; Salesforce Data 360 describes persistent conversation and profile memories; Twilio Conversation Memory describes customer-care and agent-handoff uses. Twilio’s documentation expressly says Conversation Memory is not HIPAA Eligible and is not PCI compliant, so those documented constraints rule it out for workflows that require those qualifications on that basis.
Product maturity and compliance language can change. The cited Cloudflare Agent Memory page is dated June 2, 2026, and its conversation-state page is dated June 3, 2026; those pages identify private-beta and experimental status, respectively. Verify current availability, service terms, data-processing commitments, geography, retention behavior, and compliance eligibility directly before deployment.
Set memory rules before connecting it to customer data
Limit what becomes durable
Define eligible memory categories, such as active case status or a customer-confirmed communication preference. Exclude details that do not help provide support, and apply additional review to sensitive information. A transcript being available does not mean it should be retained or surfaced to a future agent.

Scope every record and retrieval request to the appropriate customer and tenant. Make the scope part of the authorization path, not merely a label added to a search query. Test for collisions between similar names, shared devices, linked accounts, and neighboring tenants; an irrelevant result is a quality problem, but a wrong-customer result is a security failure.

Plan correction, expiry, and deletion
Provide a way to correct a false memory and record when a fact has been superseded. Set retention periods based on the service’s purpose and applicable requirements rather than assuming a universal duration. A deletion workflow should cover active records and any derived indexes, caches, or copies through which the application could still retrieve the information. The exact legal obligations depend on jurisdiction and use case.
Restrict access and preserve accountability
Control which agents, employees, and services can read or change memory. Keep enough audit information to investigate access and changes, while avoiding unnecessary retention of sensitive logs. Design escalation paths for uncertain identity, conflicting facts, or actions that require human judgment.
These controls align with risk-management concerns in NIST’s voluntary AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0), which organizes work around Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage. NIST identifies trustworthiness characteristics including reliability, security, transparency, privacy, and fairness; the framework is guidance, not a product certification or a substitute for legal review. NIST says the AI RMF 1.0 is being revised.
The European Data Protection Board’s April 2025 paper discusses memory as data storage and retention, including attention to third-party systems and access management. Treat it as guidance for identifying risks, not proof that a particular architecture automatically meets every legal obligation. Requirements depend on the data, jurisdiction, and business context.

Evaluate recall, restraint, and lifecycle behavior
Test the full application path—not only whether a search returns a record. For each case, verify what context the agent receives, what it says, and whether any action is correctly authorized.
- Returning customer with an unresolved ticket: Does the agent retrieve the correct case and avoid asking again for details that are already known and still valid?
- Similar customers or neighboring tenants: Can any query or tool path expose one customer’s memory to another?
- Corrected or conflicting facts: Does the agent use the current verified value and avoid repeating a superseded one?
- Irrelevant personal history: Does the system leave unrelated memories out of the response context and answer?
- Stale remembered guidance: When an old answer conflicts with current support documentation, does the agent follow the authoritative current source?
- Expired or deleted records: Can the application still retrieve the information through an index, cache, or alternate path after the lifecycle operation?
- Unverified identity or consequential action: Does the agent stop for authorization or escalate instead of relying on a remembered claim?
Track retrieval relevance, whether retrieved facts are used accurately, wrong-customer leakage, correction and deletion success, escalation quality, and the effort required from customers. These are useful evaluation dimensions, not published universal targets: the cited material establishes no standard accuracy, satisfaction, or productivity benchmark for this particular system. Use the results to prioritize fixes in governance, measurement, and operational controls.
Make the deployment decision against your requirements
Before selecting an implementation, document the data the agent may remember, the permitted scopes, retention and deletion behavior, the sources that remain authoritative, and the actions the agent may take. Then confirm that the chosen platform can meet those requirements in the intended geography and service configuration. Product examples demonstrate possible patterns; they do not establish comparative pricing, suitability for a regulated workflow, or performance in your own support operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA durable support agent is not one that remembers the most. It is one that retrieves a small amount of relevant, correctly scoped context, yields to current authoritative guidance, and can correct or forget what it should no longer use.
