You can build a custom AI character chatbot by storing the character’s traits and scenario separately from your app, then sending those instructions—with the relevant chat history and the user’s latest message—to a model. Choose either a hosted model API or a local runtime such as Ollama. The model, prompt, and context you provide determine how well the character performs; a custom interface alone does not guarantee Character.AI-level quality or reliable long-term memory.
Character.AI’s Help Center said on May 2, 2023, “We don’t currently have an API.” Because that statement is dated, check the live Help Center before deciding that no official API is available. Do not assume an unofficial interface is supported.

What you need to build
A character chatbot has two distinct parts: a conversational interface and a model backend. The interface lets someone select a character, send messages, and view the conversation. The backend constructs a request from the character definition, any user-specific details, relevant previous turns, and the latest message; it sends that request to a model and displays the reply.

A polished chat screen does not generate responses by itself, and a model does not automatically remember a character or earlier conversation. The character’s instructions and the history your app includes are inputs to generation. If an important fact is missing from those inputs, the model may not use it.

For a first version, aim for a private, single-user prototype. Decide whether your character is a fictional persona, narrator, roleplay partner, or task-focused assistant. A public or multi-user service adds separate work around accounts, abuse controls, moderation, data retention, and age-appropriate use. Requirements vary by jurisdiction; the sources covered here do not establish legal or deployment requirements for a particular location.
Choose hosted or local generation
The main implementation choice is whether a provider hosts the model or your computer runs it. Neither route is universally better. The right choice depends on your willingness to configure and maintain a local setup, the data path you are comfortable with, and the model’s quality and speed in your use case.
| Factor | Hosted API | Local runtime |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Integrate with a provider’s API and manage an account and credentials. | Install a compatible runtime and configure a model on a suitable computer. |
| Data path | Requests go to the selected provider. Check its current privacy and retention terms. | Generation can run on the local machine, but an app may still send telemetry, use cloud services, or store chats elsewhere. |
| Cost | May involve usage-based or subscription charges; current prices were not established here. | Uses local hardware and electricity; model-specific hardware needs and total costs depend on the setup and were not established here. |
| Quality and latency | Depend on the chosen model, provider, prompt, and network. | Depend on the chosen model, computer, prompt, and local configuration. |
| Maintenance | The provider manages model serving; you still need to adapt to its current API, model availability, and limits. | You manage the runtime and model setup, including updates and compatibility. |
| Control | You control your app and prompts; provider-specific model and data controls vary. | You can choose local models and configure the app, but local execution alone does not prove that no data leaves the device. |
When a hosted API makes sense
A hosted API is a practical route if you want to integrate generation without setting up local inference. Your application sends a request to the selected provider and displays the returned response. Keep secret credentials on a server rather than exposing them in browser code. Before using a provider, check its current API format, available model names, costs, limits, privacy terms, and retention practices. Those details vary and should not be inferred from the fact that an API exists.
When local generation makes sense
Ollama’s documentation describes local chat generation through an API, model configuration, and carrying conversation context forward in a later request. This gives you a way to run generation through a local runtime rather than relying on a hosted inference service. It does not make the entire application automatically private: the interface, telemetry, backups, or other services could still transmit or retain chat data.
There is no universal computer or GPU requirement to quote for this route. Compatibility and performance depend on the specific model and setup, and the documentation reviewed here does not establish hardware requirements for a particular model. Check the current runtime and model documentation before choosing hardware.
Do not confuse the chat app with the model
A character-chat frontend stores character fields and assembles prompts; a model backend generates replies. A self-hosted frontend can still send requests to a third-party cloud model. Conversely, a local model runtime does not by itself provide a complete character-chat interface.

Define the character in editable fields
Keep the character definition separate from application logic so you can revise the character without rewriting the chat code. SillyTavern’s character-card documentation describes fields including identity and personality, scenario, example messages, first and alternate greetings, and prompt overrides. Those fields are a useful model for organizing your own character data; they are not a guarantee that any particular wording will produce consistent behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA starter definition can use fields like these:
Name: [character name]
Short description: [one-sentence role]
Identity and knowledge: [who the character is and what they know]
Voice: [diction, sentence length, humor, emotional register]
Scenario: [where the conversation begins and what is happening]
Boundaries: [how the character responds outside its intended role]
First greeting: [an opening that invites a response]
Alternate greetings: [optional scene-specific openings]
Example dialogue: [short exchanges demonstrating the intended voice]
Keep stable facts about the character distinct from the user’s self-description and the conversation’s changing events. For example, the character’s occupation belongs in its definition; a user’s preferred name belongs in user-specific details; a promise made five turns ago belongs in the conversation history or a summary. Mixing these together makes it harder to tell which instruction is responsible for a response and what must be carried forward between turns.
Write instructions that can be evaluated
Use concrete behavioral directions rather than relying on labels alone. “Dry humor, concise sentences, and no narration of the user’s actions” gives you observable qualities to check. “Be interesting” is much harder to test. Describe what the character knows, what it should not claim to know, how it should handle uncertainty, and how it should leave room for the user to make choices.
Use the greeting to establish a playable situation and invite the user to respond. Example dialogue should demonstrate the voice and the boundaries you actually want, not introduce conflicting behaviors. A prompt format is a starting point for testing, not a recipe that guarantees consistency.
Assemble each model request from the right context
The model does not see your app’s character screen or the entire conversation automatically. Your implementation constructs the request. Depending on the application and model interface, that request may include system-level instructions, the character definition, a user persona, selected prior turns or a summary, and the current message.

SillyTavern’s prompt documentation describes assembling elements such as character definitions, persona, history, documents, and the latest message into a request. Its common-settings documentation also describes context that includes character information, system prompts, and chat history, along with a workflow for inspecting the prompt. This is a useful design principle whether you use that interface or build your own: inspect the final input that actually reaches the model.

Use a prompt structure you can inspect
Keep the major parts of the request identifiable during development. For example, the conceptual structure could be:
System instructions: [general behavior and format]
Character definition: [stable identity, voice, scenario, and boundaries]
User details: [optional, user-provided preferences or persona]
Relevant context: [selected prior turns or a conversation summary]
Current message: [the user's latest message]
This is a planning template, not a provider-specific API payload. Different runtimes and APIs accept different request formats, so adapt it to the current documentation for the model you choose.
Handle continuity deliberately
On each turn, decide what earlier material should be sent again. Some implementations include recent turns; others can include a summary or retrieve relevant information. Ollama documents that response context can be sent with a later request to continue a conversation. That is a mechanism for carrying context forward, not proof of unlimited memory or perfect recall.
When the character forgets or contradicts something, inspect the exact assembled request. Check whether the fact was included, whether it was lost when older history was excluded, whether a summary retained it, and whether another instruction conflicts with it. If the detail is important, make an explicit decision about how your app will preserve and resend it. Do not promise perfect memory: history only helps when the implementation sends it or retrieves a relevant summary.
Build a first version in practical steps
- Choose a narrow use case. Pick one character and one intended style of interaction. Start with a private prototype so you can focus on behavior and continuity before adding public-service features.
- Store the character definition as data. Create editable fields for identity, voice, scenario, boundaries, greeting, and example dialogue. Keep these separate from the code that handles messages.
- Select a generation route. Choose a hosted API or a local runtime based on your setup and data-handling needs. Confirm the selected provider’s current API requirements or the local runtime’s current model compatibility.
- Construct a request for each turn. Combine the instructions and character data with any relevant user details, selected prior context, and the current message. Do not assume the backend knows what is on screen in the frontend.
- Keep credentials and data handling intentional. For hosted APIs, do not place secret credentials in browser code. Decide what your application stores, where it stores it, who can access it, and how it handles deletion.
- Inspect the generated input. During development, make it possible to examine the actual prompt or message array sent to the model. Use that view to diagnose drift and missing context.
- Test behavior before polishing the interface. Run the same scenarios after changing one variable at a time, such as a character field, example, prompt order, model, or amount of context.
These steps describe an architecture and workflow, not a ready-to-run code sample. API formats, authentication, model names, and local compatibility are implementation-specific; use the selected provider’s or runtime’s current documentation rather than copying an assumed endpoint or payload.
Test the character and its continuity
Before adding interface polish, write a small set of repeatable conversations. The goal is to find out whether the character works in the situations you care about and to identify which part of the request needs adjustment. This is a recommended evaluation workflow, not a benchmark or a reported test result.

- Ordinary exchange: Does the reply match the character’s voice while answering the user’s message?
- Stable fact: Ask about something the character definition says it knows. Check whether the response is consistent with that definition.
- Scene change: Shift the situation and see whether the character handles the new context without treating the original scene as immutable.
- Long conversation: Continue long enough to test what happens when the expected history window grows. Check which earlier facts remain in the actual request.
- User correction: Correct a detail and see whether the app and model use the correction in later turns.
- Boundary case: Ask for something outside the character’s intended role and check whether it responds as instructed.
For each example, check voice, consistency with the scene, respect for the user’s agency, and usefulness. When an output fails, inspect its input before changing several prompt elements at once. A missing character fact, omitted history, or conflicting instruction calls for a different fix than a model that simply produces an unsatisfactory reply. The sources do not establish a universal prompt recipe, quality score, or guaranteed memory solution.

A custom interface does not determine what happens to conversation data. The model provider, hosting service, application, and any connected services may each have their own data practices. Decide what the app needs to retain and check the current terms for every service that processes its chats.
Character.AI’s training-data documentation, published in 2026, says its systems use multiple types of data, including publicly available data, user content and interactions, internal safety and testing data, synthetic data, and third-party commercial sources. It also says the company began collecting and using data for model development in 2021 and describes post-training. This is Character.AI’s own disclosure; it does not establish what another model provider collects, retains, or uses.
For your own build, answer these questions before entering sensitive or real conversations:
- Which service receives each message, and does any part of the app send data off the device?
- Does the application store chat history, and for how long?
- Who can access stored conversations?
- Do the relevant provider terms say whether data may be used for model improvement?
- How can a user delete a conversation or account, and does deletion cover copies such as backups?
Local inference, self-hosting, or using your own provider credentials does not by itself mean zero collection or retention. The complete data path depends on the application and services you choose.

The character goes out of character
Look at the request sent for that turn. Confirm the character definition was included, check for competing instructions, and compare the output with the examples you supplied. If one instruction is vague or contradictory, revise that instruction and rerun the same test rather than changing everything at once.
Best Value
The character forgets an earlier event
Check whether the event appears in the current context, a summary, or another mechanism your app uses to select relevant history. A long conversation is not automatically available in full on every request. Decide which facts must persist and make sure the implementation carries them forward.
The interface works, but replies do not improve
Confirm that the frontend is sending the current character fields and the intended history to the model backend. A saved character card has no effect if the application does not include it in the request.
You cannot tell what the model received
Add or use a prompt-inspection workflow during development. Seeing the final prompt or message array helps distinguish an input-construction problem from an output-quality problem.
You want to run locally but do not know what hardware to buy
There is no universal specification supported here. Select a model and runtime first, then check their current compatibility and hardware documentation for the computer you have or plan to use. Model requirements vary, so do not treat a generic local-runtime guide as a guarantee that a particular model will run well.
What to verify before choosing a tool
Product and API details change. Before building around a specific service or runtime, verify the facts that affect the decision:
- Whether Character.AI has introduced an official API since the Help Center statement dated May 2, 2023.
- The selected hosted provider’s current model availability, API format, prices, rate limits, privacy terms, and retention practices.
- The local runtime’s current model compatibility and the requirements of the particular model you intend to run.
- Whether a chat frontend’s dependencies are maintained and licensed appropriately before adopting them.
No current provider prices, comparative performance results, hardware specification, or privacy audit for an alternative service are established here. Treat quality and speed as model-, prompt-, context-, and setup-dependent rather than assuming one route always wins.
