Marketing automation helps you coordinate messages across channels by using audience data and workflow rules to decide who receives a message, when it is sent, and what action follows. To use it effectively, define the campaign goal and audience first, then choose the channels, prepare the content, set schedules or behavior-based triggers, and measure the results.
What marketing automation does
Marketing automation is software for managing marketing tasks and campaigns through workflows. A workflow can send a message on a schedule or respond to customer behavior, such as signing up or engaging with content. Depending on the product and interface, coordinated activity may include email, web, social, text messaging, mobile or push messages, WhatsApp, direct mail, call-center activity, or in-store communications.

Automation does not decide your strategy for you. Your team still defines the audience, message, channels, and rules. The software applies those rules, coordinates campaign steps, and can help measure their results. Salesforce describes a journey that connects signup, follow-up messages, content engagement, and a sales handoff; it is an example of how workflow steps can work together, not a required design for every campaign.

1. Set the goal and define the audience
Decide what the campaign should accomplish and which people it should reach. Use available customer data to form a relevant segment, rather than treating every contact as the same audience. In Adobe Campaign Web documentation, audience definition comes before adding a channel activity to a workflow.

2. Choose channels that fit the audience and task
Select channels based on the purpose of the message and the ways your audience can be reached. A follow-up after signup might begin with email; a time-sensitive update might call for another supported channel. These are planning examples, not guarantees that a particular product supports a given channel. Check channel availability in the exact product edition and interface you intend to use.
3. Prepare and review the content
Write content for each channel while keeping the campaign’s core message consistent. Check that personalization uses the intended audience data, and review the complete message and its destination before delivery. Different channels have different formats and constraints, so a message may need adaptation rather than a verbatim copy.

4. Set the schedule, triggers, and workflow path
Choose whether delivery should happen at a planned time or in response to a customer action. Where the platform allows it, define waits and branches so the next step can reflect what a person does—for example, whether they engage with a message. Adobe Campaign Web documents a Scheduler activity for recurring deliveries; that documented capability should not be assumed to apply to every product or interface.
5. Coordinate the handoff and measure outcomes
Decide what happens after a customer responds or reaches a meaningful point in the journey. That may mean another message or a handoff to sales or another system, depending on your process and integrations. Measure campaign results against the original goal, then use what you learn to adjust audience rules, content, timing, or channel choice.

Compare platforms by workflow fit, not channel count
A long channel list does not show whether a platform can support your actual campaign. Compare the capabilities that determine how well it can select an audience, coordinate actions, and help your team learn from results.
| What to evaluate | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Channel availability | Which channels are supported in the specific edition and interface? Are any required channels unavailable or subject to limits? |
| Audience data and segmentation | What customer data can the workflow use, and how can you define or update audience segments? |
| Workflow controls | Can you use schedules, behavior-based triggers, waits, and branches that match the campaign? |
| Personalization and consistency | Can messages use relevant audience data while preserving a coherent campaign across channels? |
| Integrations and handoffs | Can the workflow connect to the systems needed for follow-up, including sales processes where relevant? |
| Reporting | Can you measure the outcomes that matter to the campaign goal and use them to make adjustments? |

Match the workflow to the campaign’s complexity
For a focused campaign
Start with the audience, the channels you genuinely need, and a small set of clear delivery rules. A simpler workflow is easier to review and makes it more apparent which message or timing choice needs adjustment.
For a longer customer journey
Examine how the platform brings together audience data, multiple channel steps, behavior-based decisions, integrations, and reporting. The more steps a journey contains, the more important it is to make each trigger and next action intentional and measurable.

Keep channel claims tied to the product interface
Channel support can differ between products and interfaces, even within a vendor’s product family. Adobe’s Campaign v8 Client Console documentation describes synchronizing online channels such as email, web, mobile, and social with offline direct mail, call-center, and in-store channels; that page was last updated October 5, 2026. Adobe’s Campaign v8 Web UI documentation lists email, SMS, WhatsApp, push, and direct-mail workflow activities and was last updated June 16, 2026. These are descriptions of different interfaces, not a promise that every channel is available in every edition or setup.
Before building a campaign, confirm that the exact edition and interface support the channels, data sources, workflow controls, and integrations you need. The cited capability descriptions do not establish current prices, plan limits, or licensing terms.
