Choose practice that addresses a real batting, bowling, wicketkeeping or fielding need, keep supporting skills in the plan, and make the schedule fit your time, facilities and commitments. Review it regularly and adjust when it stops being useful or workable.
Start with your role and a specific goal
Begin by identifying the role you expect to play most in your current season or match context. Then choose one or two development goals. A goal should describe a skill or situation you want to improve, rather than simply naming a session such as “go to the nets.” For example, a batter might work on a particular scoring challenge; a pace or spin bowler might target a discipline-specific skill; a wicketkeeper might focus on a keeping task; and a fielder might work on catching, throwing or movement.

Use your level and circumstances to decide what a useful practice looks like. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) describes its Core Coach programme as designed to give learners “the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead player-centred coaching sessions.” Its coaching content includes planning and player development, alongside technical, tactical, physical, mental and safety considerations. These are planning principles, not a prescribed personal timetable.

Build each session around an outcome
Before a session, decide what you want to practise and choose an activity that matches the goal. Keep the task suitable for your experience and the conditions available: access to a coach, teammates, nets or an open field all affect what is practical. ECB coaching workshops cover practice design, differentiation, maximising nets and integrating practices, which supports a flexible approach rather than repeating undirected net sessions.

A session can include focused technical work and a more integrated or game-like activity when facilities and coaching allow. For instance, net work can be paired with a fielding circuit for players waiting their turn, an option mentioned in the ECB Coaches’ Safety Pack listing. Keep fielding and other supporting skills in the routine even when your main goal is role-specific.
Cover your role without neglecting supporting skills
Batters
Give focused practice to the technical or tactical challenge you have chosen. Where appropriate, retain time for running, fielding and match-situation practice. ECB workshop topics include “Scoring runs,” as well as broader practice design.

Pace and spin bowlers
Make the bowling goal specific to your discipline, then include fielding and wider physical preparation suited to you. ECB coaching materials distinguish pace and spin bowling, and the ICC Level 2 Coaching Course includes specialist bowling coaching. Do not use a generic routine to set bowling loads; seek relevant individualized guidance.

Wicketkeepers
Set aside dedicated time for keeping while maintaining batting and fielding practice appropriate to your broader playing role. ECB and ICC coaching materials both identify wicketkeeping as a specialist area.

All-rounders and players with multiple roles
Choose which responsibility needs emphasis now, based on likely match duties and current development goals. Rotate the emphasis when those needs change, while keeping a manageable core routine. This is an application of player-centred planning, not a separate official schedule.
Make the routine repeatable and review it
- Set a realistic plan. Fit practice to the time you actually have, access to facilities and teammates, and other commitments.
- Give each session a purpose. Link the activity to a current goal and your level rather than adding sessions simply to increase volume.
- Keep complementary skills in view. Include fielding and other work that supports your main role; combine technical and integrated practice when practical.
- Review after practice. Ask whether you addressed the intended goal and whether the plan remains workable. Keep, adapt or replace activities based on that review.
The ECB’s icoachcricket platform describes filters and tools for designing, evaluating and saving practice plans, which may help coaches organize sessions. It does not establish a required personal weekly frequency or session duration. The official materials cited here do not prescribe one ideal schedule for players across ages, standards, formats or circumstances, so treat any example routine as adaptable rather than an official rule.

Keep safety and recovery specific
Hard-ball practice requires attention to safety. The ECB Coaches’ Safety Pack listing says equipment should be checked and notes that a fielding practice circuit can occupy players who are not taking part in nets. Match the activity and equipment to the player and setting; the available listing does not establish a complete safety checklist.
Concussion is a specific medical issue, not a template for ordinary rest days or other injuries. ECB guidance requires a graded return to play to be supervised by a healthcare professional trained in return to play and head injuries. Its protocol calls for symptoms to be absent for 24 hours before simple cognitive and physical activity, advances through stages with 24-hour observation windows, and requires medical clearance before full-contact practice. For children and adolescents, return to school function takes priority before return to sport. Follow the ECB guidance and qualified medical advice rather than adapting these steps yourself.
