Build a competitor screenshot archive by defining what you want to compare, maintaining a deduplicated URL inventory, capturing pages under fixed conditions, and recording each attempt—including redirects and failures—in a searchable manifest. The archive documents what a page looked like at a particular time; a screenshot alone cannot explain why it changed or whether the change affected rankings.
Decide what the archive should answer
Start with a specific SEO question rather than collecting every page on every competitor’s site. A narrow scope makes it easier to check whether captures are comparable and whether your URL rules are working.

Set the comparison scope
- Choose the competitors and the market or language you care about.
- Choose page classes relevant to the question, such as product, category, pricing, or editorial pages.
- Decide whether geography, location, or device state could change what visitors see, and record those contexts.
- Keep the first capture series small enough to inspect failures and refine the process.
For repeat comparisons, treat desktop and mobile as separate capture series. Do not mix them as though they were the same page state.

Build and maintain a URL inventory
Seed the queue with publicly available XML sitemaps and relevant internal links. Google describes sitemaps as a way to tell Google about pages and covers URL structure, crawling, and page metadata in its crawling and indexing documentation. For competitor research, these are discovery sources—not proof that a sitemap lists every page or a rule for which page you should archive.

Keep both the discovered URL and a normalized key
Normalize common variants carefully, such as scheme, host, trailing slash, and tracking parameters, to identify likely duplicates. Retain the exact URL you discovered alongside the normalized key. That lets you inspect redirects and alternate URL forms instead of silently losing how the page entered the queue. Do not treat Google’s canonicalization guidance as an instruction for your archive; the competitor’s published signals are evidence to record, not rules your system must enforce.
Use a stable queue
Give each entry a competitor, page type, and market or device context before scheduling captures. Keep the queue editable: URLs can disappear, redirect, or become inaccessible, and those outcomes should remain visible in the archive rather than being dropped.

Choose a capture method and fix its conditions
A custom browser workflow offers control over navigation and capture settings. Playwright supports viewport and full-page screenshots, with options including output format and scale; see its screenshot guide and Page screenshot API.

Keep comparison settings consistent
- Fix the browser engine and version for a comparison series.
- Set and record viewport width, height, and device scale.
- Choose viewport-only or full-page capture and use the same mode for comparable captures.
- Choose a predictable wait condition, such as waiting for a selector, a delay, or network activity to settle, and record what you chose.
- Record capture timing and any relevant location or device context.
Pages may vary because of consent dialogs, personalization, animations, or content that loads asynchronously. Record the visible state you captured; do not silently remove or mask elements in a way that makes the capture look like a different visitor experience.

Use automation or a managed service
With browser automation, you control the browser and capture pipeline but must build and maintain URL discovery, storage, scheduling, and failure handling. Screenshot Archive advertises scheduled viewport and full-page captures, stored HTML/PDF and metadata, APIs, and change detection, including competitor landing-page monitoring. These are vendor claims, not independently tested results; check current plan limits, capture frequency and conditions, export options, and retention directly before relying on the service. For any option, compare browser control, URL management, dynamic-page handling, mobile and full-page support, metadata and failure reporting, HTML/PDF export, portability, alerts, maintenance burden, and cost at your intended capture cadence.
Save every attempt in a searchable manifest
Index the capture folder in a CSV file, SQLite table, or JSON Lines file. The manifest is the authoritative record connecting a screenshot to its URL, time, settings, and outcome. The following fields are a practical recommendation, not a mandated schema:

Use UTC timestamps and preserve separate records for each capture date and device profile. A file path can include a stable competitor/page key and UTC timestamp, but keep the manifest as the index. If navigation fails or access is blocked, do not invent a title, description, or status: leave unavailable metadata empty and record the failure.
Review archive quality before comparing pages
- Check that each recorded screenshot exists and is associated with the intended manifest row.
- Confirm that final URLs and redirects are recorded, and that failed attempts remain in the archive.
- Verify that page metadata was captured where available and distinguish unavailable values from empty-but-valid values in your own workflow.
- Compare only captures made with like-for-like viewport, browser, scale, wait, and capture-mode settings.
- Keep original screenshots unchanged. Put annotations or visual diffs in separate files so the evidence capture remains intact.
Use the Wayback Machine as supplementary evidence
The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine can help find older captures, but it is not a complete historical record. Its help documentation notes that pages can be missing or incomplete because of discovery gaps, access restrictions, robots.txt, owner exclusion, or technical limitations; JavaScript-dependent pages can also be difficult to archive. See the Wayback Machine help page for its limits and lookup guidance.

Save Page Now saves one specific page once; it does not archive a whole site, multiple pages, or schedule future captures. The Internet Archive also documents an Availability API for checking whether an accessible archived capture exists and a CDX server API for more complex capture queries. Verify current API behavior and usage constraints before making either part of a production workflow.
Interpret changes without overclaiming
Use the archive to identify observable differences in copy, layout, page elements, and calls to action. Check important details against the live URL and the associated manifest metadata. A screenshot is evidence of visible page state at capture time—not proof of the reason for a change, ranking movement, traffic impact, competitor intent, or an experiment’s result.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can capture a page as an image or PDF; the API response also identifies outcomes such as a clean capture, a cache hit, or a failed page, which can help your archive distinguish attempts. Use consistent capture settings and retain the requested URL and timestamp in your own manifest.
