A useful EKS NOC view combines three layers rather than forcing every signal onto one screen: the EKS console observability dashboard for cluster health and control-plane context, CloudWatch Container Insights for node and workload telemetry, and Logs Insights for diagnosis. You can promote Container Insights charts into a shared CloudWatch dashboard, then add workload-specific signals. The dashboard helps an on-call engineer find where to investigate; it does not replace alert routing, service thresholds, escalation ownership, or runbooks.
Start with the EKS observability dashboard
Open the cluster in the Amazon EKS console and use its observability dashboard as the cluster-level entry point. AWS describes it as a summary of cluster health and performance, with links to relevant details. It brings together cluster health, control-plane monitoring, and cluster insights: a useful first stop when an alert says the cluster is unhealthy but not yet which resource is responsible. Cluster health issues and configuration insights behave differently. Health issue status can be refreshed by the operator; configuration insights refresh automatically every 24 hours and cannot be manually refreshed. Treat the latter as a periodic configuration view, not a live incident feed.

Separate basic EKS metrics from workload telemetry
AWS documents basic vended EKS metrics in the AWS/EKS namespace for Kubernetes 1.28 and later. These are distinct from the more detailed workload-level metrics and logs available through Container Insights. Do not assume that enabling basic EKS metrics gives you pod-level visibility, or that every metric is available on every Kubernetes version. AWS: Monitor cluster data with Amazon CloudWatch.

For supported clusters, the EKS control-plane monitoring view adds context such as API-server request rates and error codes, storage size, scheduler attempts, pending pods, request latency, inflight requests, and webhook behavior. These indicators help distinguish a control-plane bottleneck from a workload problem. AWS documents the views for Kubernetes 1.28 and later. Some control-plane Log Insights views require control-plane audit logging to be enabled. After enabling control-plane logging, AWS says it can take several minutes for logs to appear. CloudWatch Logs Insights queries incur CloudWatch charges, so use the logs as an investigation tool rather than assuming the view is cost-free.
Enable Container Insights for workload-level visibility
AWS recommends its OpenTelemetry (OTel) Container Insights configuration for EKS. The deployment path uses the amazon-cloudwatch-observability add-on, installed through the console or CLI. AWS’s current quick start lists prerequisites including an existing EKS cluster on Kubernetes 1.28 or later, platform version eks.1 or later, add-on version 6.2.0 or later, identity and permissions setup, and outbound connectivity. Check the current AWS prerequisites against the target cluster before installing: version compatibility and configuration requirements can change. AWS says its documented quick-start procedure takes under five minutes under the stated assumptions; this is not a guarantee for every environment. The guide gives expected infrastructure-metric and container-log latency of 2–3 minutes, not a measurement for an individual cluster. Once configured, verify incoming data in the intended AWS account, region, cluster, and time range; a successful add-on deployment alone does not prove that the dashboard is looking at the right telemetry.
Container Insights collects data at multiple levels, including node, namespace, service, and pod views. Its dashboards can show CPU and memory top contributors, and its metrics can be used in alarms. For the available metric names and dimensions, consult AWS’s EKS and Kubernetes Container Insights metrics reference. Keep high-cardinality dimensions useful for investigation, but do not automatically turn every dimension into a stored custom metric; AWS notes that it does not create every possible metric from performance log data, in part to help manage costs. Organize the NOC dashboard around operator questions
Build the view so an on-call person can move from a symptom to an affected resource and then to evidence. Start with a small set of panels grouped by the decision each supports; add workload-specific detail where it changes what the operator does.

Is the cluster healthy?
Use the EKS dashboard’s health issues and configuration insights as the cluster-level context. Follow its affected-resource links rather than trying to duplicate all EKS health information as CloudWatch widgets.

Keep API request errors and latency, inflight requests, scheduler outcomes, and pending pods together. A rise in errors or latency alongside scheduling trouble points to a different investigation than a single workload with elevated resource use.
Which nodes or workloads are contributing?
Use Container Insights node, namespace, service, and pod views to find CPU and memory contributors. Drill into the specific resource rather than relying on a cluster-wide average that can hide one hot node or failing pod.

What changed or is failing?
Use Container Insights performance log events and Logs Insights to investigate container restarts, missing or unscheduled pods, node failures, and application error patterns. For example, AWS documents queries and views for finding restarts and failed or unscheduled resources. AWS: Viewing Container Insights metrics. For control-plane events, use relevant audit logs when logging is enabled.
Does the service need application telemetry?
Infrastructure and Kubernetes signals do not explain every application failure. CloudWatch’s Prometheus reporting includes selected integrations such as NGINX, HAProxy, Memcached, App Mesh, and Java/JMX, as well as configured exporters. Add the signals that match the service actually running in the cluster; these integrations are not automatic coverage for every application. AWS: Viewing your Prometheus metrics.
Use workload SLOs, normal operating baselines, and response procedures to choose alarm thresholds. AWS’s metric references and dashboard examples do not establish universal thresholds that are right for every cluster.

Promote useful Container Insights charts into a shared dashboard
Container Insights provides an automatic dashboard for its collected telemetry. AWS Prescriptive Guidance describes filtering that view and using Add to Dashboard to add displayed metrics to a standard CloudWatch dashboard, where a team can share and customize the result. From there, remove generic panels that do not help your responders, add workload-specific metrics, and arrange widgets in the same order an investigation normally proceeds. Use the EKS console dashboard and the custom CloudWatch dashboard as complementary views: the former supplies EKS health and control-plane context, while the latter can collect the workload metrics and logs your team uses repeatedly. Preserve direct links or clear navigation between them so the shared dashboard does not become a copy of every console feature.
Choose telemetry and retention deliberately
Container Insights has different billing models for classic and enhanced EKS observability. AWS describes enhanced observability as billed per observation, while the original model charges collected metrics and logs as custom metrics. Actual cost depends on current AWS pricing, region, configuration, data volume, retention, and query use; no single estimate applies to every cluster. Check the current pricing and configuration before enabling collection broadly. AWS: Container Insights.

AWS warns that collecting these logs can significantly increase CloudWatch Logs costs. Decide which logs to collect, how long to retain them, and how frequently responders should query them. Retention behavior depends on deployment configuration; choose and verify the intended retention rather than assuming logs should remain indefinitely. AWS: Sending logs to Amazon CloudWatch.

The recommended OTel configuration and classic enhanced configuration differ in version and setup details even though both use the observability add-on.
