The setup has three separate parts: YouTube Live Control Room supplies the stream URL and private key; FFmpeg reads and sends the media using YouTube-compatible encoder settings; Docker runs the process. Docker does not itself make a stream continuous: you still need to monitor the broadcast and plan for interruptions, archiving, and recovery.
What you need to decide first
- Where FFmpeg will run: a local computer must stay powered on and connected, while a remote host can run independently of your home connection. The host must have enough sustained upload capacity for the encoded stream.
- What you will send: this guide concerns prerecorded media. A file-based stream is not a camera broadcast, and repeating a file does not grant rights to its contents.
- What “24/7” means for your channel: one uninterrupted event may not produce a complete YouTube archive, and rewind can be limited on very long streams.
- How you will respond to a failure: process supervision and monitoring are different concerns. A container can be configured to restart a process, but a restart alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a valid stream or restore the prior playback position.
The exact Docker image, restart policy, secret-injection method, and a complete YouTube-ready Docker command depend on the chosen image and deployment. The instructions below therefore show the verified configuration decisions without presenting an untested container recipe as definitive.
Configure YouTube Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and follow the current Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder workflow. Create or select the live stream and use the server URL and stream key shown for it.
- If live streaming has not been enabled on the account, allow for initial enablement to take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s workflow asks you to enter the server URL and key in your encoder.
- Use the current endpoint shown in Live Control Room rather than copying an endpoint from an old tutorial. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary content. Its documented RTMPS connection uses port 443 and requires a valid YouTube endpoint and application path.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public repository, a container image, tutorial, or logs. Use the credential-handling method documented for your chosen Docker deployment, and avoid exposing the key in commands or diagnostic output that others can access.
- Start with a preview and confirm that the expected video and audio reach YouTube before relying on a continuous run.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through an SSL connection. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS for the protocol requirements.
Choose FFmpeg output settings
Match the output to the source file, your available upload capacity, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. The rates below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates in guidance accessed in 2026; they are not guarantees that a particular host or connection can sustain the stream.

| Output resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
For other codec options, minimum and maximum ranges, or a changed recommendation, check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring the job.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. The bitrate table above is specifically for H.264.
- Rate control: YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and gives four seconds as the maximum.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio.
- Upload capacity: leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to the connection’s best-case upload rate. A busy or unstable connection can interrupt delivery.
For a 24/7 prerecorded stream, avoid upscaling or increasing frame rate without a reason: higher output settings can require more bandwidth and processing than the source needs.

This is FFmpeg’s generic example, not a tested YouTube command. The example does not establish a particular looping behavior or automatic recovery behavior. Replace the generic destination only with the current server endpoint, application path, and stream key supplied by YouTube; verify the resulting command against the FFmpeg build, selected output protocol, and Docker image you actually use. FFmpeg documents the example in its protocol documentation.
- Select and verify an image: confirm its FFmpeg version and build include the input and output protocols and codecs you need. Do not assume an image tag is current or supports a particular encoder.
- Make the media available inside the container: mount or otherwise provide the source file using the method documented for your image and host. Check that the container can read it and that its path matches the FFmpeg input.
- Set the output deliberately: choose a supported codec, target resolution and frame rate, CBR, the keyframe interval, audio format, and bitrate using YouTube’s current settings guidance.
- Provide the destination credentials securely: use the selected deployment’s documented secret mechanism. Avoid baking the key into an image or committing it to source control.
- Start with a short validation run: check YouTube’s preview, confirm audio and video, and watch for sustained upload or encoding problems before depending on a long broadcast.
- Plan supervision separately: verify how your chosen container runtime handles process exit, signals, and restart behavior. A restart policy can relaunch a process, but it does not prove the stream is healthy or guarantee playback resumes at the same position.
Docker is the process and packaging layer; FFmpeg handles media and transport settings; YouTube Live Control Room provides the ingest destination and stream key. For an always-on setup, document who checks the live preview and what they do when the container exits or YouTube stops receiving the stream.

Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local archive. If a complete replay matters, do not assume one continuous event will leave you with one complete YouTube recording. See Archive live streams.
DVR rewind is a separate concern: YouTube warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. Consider whether uninterrupted live presence, a reliable replay, or viewer rewind matters most before choosing one long session. Details are in Turn on DVR on live streams.

Monitor the broadcast and troubleshoot common failures
YouTube’s live-streaming tips advise setting up ahead of time, previewing the stream, monitoring audio and video quality, checking that the event is accessible, and verifying that local archive files are growing. These checks are operational guidance, not a Docker-specific recovery procedure. See YouTube live streaming tips.
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| No preview or YouTube is not receiving the stream | Check the current server URL, application path, key, and RTMPS endpoint against Live Control Room. Confirm the connection uses the required port 443 and that the host can reach the endpoint. |
| Video or audio quality is unstable | Check the actual sustained upload capacity, chosen bitrate, encoder load, and source media. Compare output settings with YouTube’s current recommendations rather than increasing bitrate blindly. |
| The container exited | Inspect the container’s exit status and logs without exposing the stream key. Confirm the input path is readable, the FFmpeg build supports the selected formats and protocol, and the host has sufficient resources. Verify restart behavior with the documentation for your runtime and image. |
| The process restarted but the broadcast did not recover as expected | Confirm that FFmpeg is again sending to the currently configured YouTube destination and check Live Control Room preview. A process restart is not evidence that YouTube accepted the stream or that playback resumed at the desired point. |
| No complete archive or limited rewind | Check the event duration and whether a local recording is being written and growing. YouTube’s archive and DVR behavior has limitations on very long streams. |
Use only content you have rights to stream
YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and says creators must have the necessary rights to exploit the content. Repeating prerecorded video or music does not create a license. Use media you own or are authorized to stream, including the audio, and review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
Or let it run in the cloud
