Sony’s recommended retail prices (RRPs) are useful dated reference points—not guaranteed checkout prices or a forecast of future sales.
How much should I save for a PS5?
Use the price for your chosen model and market as your savings target, then adjust it for the costs of your own purchase. Sony’s revised RRPs took effect on April 2, 2026. The figures below are official recommended prices, not a promise that every retailer currently charges that amount.

These are Sony’s regional RRPs announced March 27, 2026, and effective April 2, 2026. They may not match a current retailer offer or your final total. For other territories, Sony advises checking local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available. Sony’s announcement lists the revised prices and regional guidance.
How to build a realistic console budget
- Choose the model and edition. Decide which console configuration suits you before setting a savings target. Compare the locally available options rather than assuming one is right for everyone.
- Check a current local listing. Look at a retailer in your market or PlayStation Direct where available. Record the price, currency, retailer, and date; the RRP is a reference, not a live quote.
- Add only costs that apply to your purchase. Account for applicable tax and delivery, plus any game, extra controller, or other accessory you intend to buy. These vary by location, seller, and bundle, so there is no universal checkout total.
- Set a maximum total and a review date. Choose the amount you are comfortable spending. If the current offer is above that ceiling, keep saving or reconsider the model later rather than relying on a discount arriving by a particular date.
- Recheck before buying. Refresh the local listing near purchase time instead of relying on an old saved price. Sony has changed RRPs at different times and in different markets.
What if the PlayStation price changes before I buy?
Treat the price you see today as a snapshot, not a promise about what the console will cost later. Sony’s 2022 announcement raised RRPs in selected markets and explicitly said there would be no U.S. increase in that round; its 2026 announcement set revised prices globally. That history shows prices can change and changes can vary by market, but it does not establish when another increase, sale, or discount will happen. Keep your budget flexible: save toward the total you have set, and revisit both the local offer and your chosen edition if the price changes. There is no established schedule for future price moves, typical sale prices, or how long an individual buyer should save.
Should you wait or budget for the current price?
If you want the console and can afford the current local offer, base your plan on that offer and the extras you actually need. If it exceeds your ceiling, waiting can give you time to save or reconsider your choice—but waiting alone does not guarantee a lower price. The available price history is not a forecast.

Compare options on the factors that affect your own total: current local price, model or edition, planned extras, and how recently you checked the price. The Digital Edition has a lower listed RRP than the standard PS5 in the markets above, but those RRPs alone do not establish which option costs less over time for an individual buyer.

Keep old launch prices out of a current budget
Sony’s 2020 U.S. launch prices were $399.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $499.99 for PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. Those are historical launch RRPs, not current price targets. Sony’s launch announcement provides that historical context.
