Build your budget from comparable written quotes, then add supplies, building charges, lease cash, utility changes and a contingency reserve. One recent local report put a self-packed three-bedroom move at $1,500, but that is an anecdote—not a market average or a quote for your move.
What to include in your moving budget
Keep the cost of transporting belongings separate from the cash required to leave one lease and start another. A refundable deposit still ties up cash, even if it may eventually be returned.

Request at least three itemized estimates for the same date and service scope. Ask each provider to spell out hourly minimums, travel time, truck charges, packing labor, valuation or insurance options, payment fees, and building-specific charges. Compare estimated totals and included work, not just an advertised hourly rate.

In a recent AskSeattle discussion, one person reported paying $1,500 for a three-bedroom move from Seattle to Bellevue. The household packed its belongings into rented plastic boxes; movers carried the boxes and furniture. The thread also includes different reports for smaller local moves, including hourly quotes and several hundred dollars for a short one-bedroom move.

These are individual accounts, not a representative price range: the posts describe moves with different dates and scopes, and the discussion is self-selected. Do not use the $1,500 figure as a forecast for a studio, a fully packed household or a home with unusually difficult access. Use it only as a reminder to compare the details behind each quote.
How to get estimates you can compare
- Make an inventory. List rooms, furniture and bulky items. Note what you will pack yourself and what you want the mover to pack.
- Record access at both addresses. Tell providers about stairs, elevator reservations, long carries, loading zones, truck-size limits and parking or placement restrictions.
- Request the same scope and date. Ask at least three movers or service providers to quote the same inventory, packing plan and move date. If your date is flexible, ask whether the price changes on other dates.
- Get line items in writing. Confirm labor minimums, travel time, truck or mileage charges, packing labor, payment fees, coverage or valuation terms, and building charges. Ask what could change the estimate.
- Compare the complete cost and terms. Check included services, schedule flexibility, storage, cancellation or change terms, and who drives and handles your goods—not just the headline price.
Choose a service plan that fits your move

Price supplies and portable-service options by address and date
The U-Haul Seattle Interbay listing includes moving trucks, boxes, packing supplies, tape, protective wrap, blankets, carts and other lifting tools. Its Bellevue plastic-box rental page requires dates and a quantity to display rates, so it does not establish a universal rental price.

PODS advertises local moving and portable storage in Seattle and requests move details to estimate container needs. U-Pack offers a quote tool and says off-peak dates or service-center moves may save; the reviewed page does not confirm availability or pricing for this particular short route. For either provider, get an address- and date-specific quote and confirm delivery access before putting a figure in your budget.

Budget renter costs without mixing them into the mover quote
Seattle’s renter guidance states: “Security deposit and fees combined cannot exceed one month’s rent.” It also explains limits on nonrefundable move-in fees and installment options for qualifying rental agreements. Those are Seattle tenancy rules; do not assume they govern your new Bellevue lease. Confirm itemized charges and applicable rules with the destination landlord and relevant Bellevue or state guidance using the City of Seattle move-in cost guidance as the source for Seattle requirements.
Track a refundable deposit as a cash-flow need, not as though it were the same kind of permanent expense as a nonrefundable fee. Check when the outgoing landlord expects to return your deposit and whether that timing leaves a temporary gap before destination costs are due. Include rent overlap separately from the physical moving bill.

Confirm utility responsibility and local charges
Do not assume utility accounts or bills work the same way in both homes. Seattle Public Utilities handles water, sewer and garbage accounts. A tenant in a Seattle rental may be responsible for utility charges if the rental agreement says so; ask the landlord how building utilities are billed, and request a copy of an underlying bill when required. Confirm account and payment responsibilities at both addresses using the Seattle utility guidance.
For purchases of taxable supplies, the Washington Department of Revenue’s local rate table for Quarter 4, effective October 1 through December 31, 2026, lists combined sales and use tax of 10.55% in Seattle and 10.30% in Bellevue. Those rates apply to relevant taxable purchases, not to mover charges as a blanket rule, and they are time- and address-specific. Use the agency’s local sales and use tax rate table and address lookup to check the rate for your purchase date and location.

Seattle’s 2026 street-use fee guidance reports a 2.6% adjustment to review, inspection, issuance and renewal fees. This is not a general moving-permit charge for every household. Check with building management and the city only if your truck placement or use of public right-of-way makes a permit relevant; see the Seattle permit fee guidance.
A fill-in worksheet for your actual budget
Use real written quotes and lease documents rather than adding an assumed city-to-city average. Put one-time charges and cash needed on move-in day in separate columns so that a refundable deposit is not mistaken for a permanent cost.
