You can also create an air pocket, but block behavior differs between Java and Bedrock, so the door trick is not universal.
Choose a method for your dive
| Method | What it does | Best suited to | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Respiration helmet | Extends underwater breathing time. | Longer dives when you already have enchanted armor. | It does not let you breathe indefinitely. Minecraft Help describes the enchantment as extending underwater breathing time: Respiration. |
| Turtle shell | Grants a limited water-breathing effect when worn in the helmet slot. | A small extension without relying on a built refuge. | The effect starts counting down when you submerge, so it is not an all-purpose solution. Minecraft describes turtle shells as wearable items that let players breathe a little longer: Taking Inventory: Turtle Shell. |
| Water Breathing potion | Provides a consumable way to breathe underwater. | Players who can spare a potion for a particular trip. | The recipe and duration are not stated here; check the current in-game brewing information for your edition and version. |
| Bubble column | Provides a place to recover air underwater. | Repeat trips near a fixed location. | Magma pulls players downward; soul sand pushes them upward. Official release notes describe these mechanics for Java 1.13 and Bedrock 1.5.0: Java 1.13 notes and Bedrock 1.5.0 notes. |
| Conduit | Gives Conduit Power when set up in water. | A constructed, longer-term underwater base or work area. | The Java 1.13 notes list one heart of the sea and nine nautilus shells for the recipe. Exact current range and activation conditions are not established here; check your edition’s current guidance. |
| Air pocket | Displaces water in a small space so you can get air. | A quick refuge when a suitable block works in your edition. | Water behavior differs between Java and Bedrock, so a technique that works in one may fail in the other. |
Use a bubble column as a refill point
Bubble columns let you return to a fixed spot for air instead of relying only on a timer. A magma block creates a downward current, while soul sand creates an upward current. The official Java 1.13 and Bedrock 1.5.0 update notes document these opposing directions and the ability to breathe in bubble columns. Because the magma current pulls downward, approach it carefully and avoid placing a refill point where it could drag you away from safety.

Build around a conduit for a longer-term option
A conduit is intended for a constructed underwater setup rather than a quick, low-resource dive. The official Java 1.13 notes give its recipe as one heart of the sea and nine nautilus shells; Bedrock 1.5.0 notes establish that it grants Conduit Power. Those historical release notes support the basic mechanics, not a current range figure or every activation condition. Confirm the requirements for your edition and version before building around a particular coverage area.
Make an air pocket only if the block works in your edition
Air-pocket tricks rely on displacing source water with a block. The community-maintained Minecraft Wiki tutorial notes that Java and Bedrock handle waterlogging differently, which affects which blocks can create an air pocket. That means an underwater door is not a reliable universal solution. Try the intended block in a safe, shallow area in your edition before depending on it during a deep dive. See the underwater-home tutorial for examples and its edition caveat.

Match your equipment to the trip
- Already have enchanted armor? Wear a Respiration helmet to extend your breathing time.
- Need a modest wearable extension? Put a turtle shell in the helmet slot and remember its effect is limited.
- Going to the same underwater spot repeatedly? Build a bubble-column refuge where its current will not put you in danger.
- Setting up a lasting underwater work area? Consider a conduit, after confirming current requirements for your edition.
- Trying the door trick? Verify that the block creates an air pocket in your edition rather than assuming Java and Bedrock behave alike.
