Break in hiking boots gradually before a long trek: begin indoors, move to short local walks, then try shorter hikes while adding distance and pack weight in stages. Wear the socks and insoles you plan to use on the trek, and progress only while the boots feel comfortable. A break-in routine can soften stiffness, but it cannot fix a poor fit.
Check the fit before you start
Put on the socks you intend to hike in and check that the boots feel snug without pinching or creating tight pressure. You should be able to wiggle your toes. REI suggests removing the insole and standing on it: leave about a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the insole. Treat that as a fit check, not a substitute for walking in the boots. Notice whether the heel sits securely and whether the tongue, laces, or boot shape create pressure points. REI’s hiking footwear fit guide explains how to assess boots and shoes for your needs.

Persistent or significant pinching, rubbing, or pressure is a reason to reassess the size or model, not to endure longer walks in the hope that it will disappear. As REI footwear fit expert Beth Henkes puts it, “The break-in process won’t turn a poor fit into a good one.” REI’s break-in guidance makes the same distinction between initial stiffness and a fit problem.

Break in boots in stages
Use the same socks and insoles throughout the progression so the boots feel as close as possible to how they will on the trek. Lace them securely but not so tightly that they create pressure; check that the tongue and any gussets lie straight.

- What You Get: NORTIV 8 aims at providing high-quality outdoor shoes.
- Wear them indoors. Walk around at home long enough to notice stiffness, slipping, or pressure. A little initial stiffness is normal. If a specific spot hurts or pinches, adjust the lacing and reassess the fit before moving on.
- Try short local walks. Once indoor wear is comfortable, walk around the block or town. Keep the outing short, and do not increase the distance until this stage feels good.
- Take them on shorter hikes. When local walks are comfortable, try trails and varied terrain. Increase mileage gradually rather than jumping straight to a long outing.
- Add pack weight progressively. A loaded pack can change how boots feel. Build toward the load you expect to carry, rather than testing full weight for the first time on the trek. L.L.Bean likewise advises wearing the planned socks and insoles and accounting for the effect of a heavy pack: L.L.Bean’s boot break-in advice.
There is no dependable universal number of days, hours, or miles that applies to every boot. Flexible hiking shoes and trail runners may feel ready with little or no break-in, while sturdier backpacking or mountaineering boots can need more time. Let comfort at each stage guide the pace, and allow extra lead time for stiffer boots. REI notes that break-in time varies by footwear.
Deal with hot spots as soon as they start
Stop if rubbing or an uncomfortable burning sensation begins. Check for a wrinkle in your sock, debris inside the boot, damp socks, or lacing that is pulling unevenly. Adjust the cause and protect the area before friction develops into a blister. Pressure, friction, and moisture can all contribute to blisters, according to REI’s blister-prevention guide.

Synthetic or wool hiking socks are preferable to cotton because cotton retains moisture. Dry replacement socks can help if your feet get damp; liner socks may help some hikers reduce friction. For more on prevention and care, see REI’s advice on preventing and treating blisters. Do not keep walking through a hot spot just to finish a test outing: REI recommends addressing discomfort early to help prevent common hiking injuries (REI’s hiking-injury guidance).

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAvoid shortcuts and last-minute tests
- Do not soak boots to soften them. REI warns that soaking can be hard on the boots as well as painful for your feet.
- Do not force the process with a long walk. A painful outing does not replace a gradual progression. REI calls soaking boots and walking long distances as shortcuts a bad idea.
- Do not start the trek in brand-new boots. Short outings give you a chance to discover fit or friction problems before they become harder to manage on the route.
- Do not assume every trek requires a heavy boot. Match footwear to the terrain, load, fit, support, and protection you need; a break-in schedule cannot make an unsuitable boot right for you.
Follow the boot manufacturer’s care instructions rather than using an unverified method to speed up softening.
