How to Borrow Library eBooks on Kobo With OverDrive or Libby

A complete guide to borrowing library ebooks on Kobo with built-in OverDrive or Libby, including supported models, country limits, setup, syncing, holds, sign-in changes, troubleshooting, and Adobe Digital Editions for unsupported readers.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Kobo model with built-in Libby by OverDrive, borrowing is straightforward: connect your library card, open Discover > OverDrive, borrow an eligible title, and sync the eReader. You can also borrow in Libby or on your library’s website and then sync the Kobo. The exact model, your country, the library’s participation, and the title’s Kobo compatibility determine which method works. Older or unlisted Kobo readers may require a separate library-website transfer using Adobe Digital Editions.

Can I use Libby on a Kobo?

Yes, but Libby is not installed like a regular reading app on every Kobo. Supported Kobo eReaders provide an integrated OverDrive/Libby borrowing feature. You sign in with a participating library card, search the library catalogue from the Kobo, borrow a title, and sync it to the device. Libby loans made on a phone, tablet, computer, or library website can also appear after synchronization when the title is supported.

Library borrowing is a service supplied by your library. You do not need to buy a Kobo to use Libby on another supported device, and owning a Kobo does not guarantee access to every title in your library’s Libby catalogue. Kobo’s support documentation explains the current limits in its Libby limitations guidance.

Think of the Kobo feature as a connection between three accounts: your Kobo account, your library card account, and the library’s OverDrive/Libby catalogue. A problem in any one of those connections can prevent a loan from appearing. The eReader does not replace your library membership, and an OverDrive login does not replace the card and PIN issued by the library.

Which Kobo models work with built-in OverDrive?

Kobo currently lists the following eReaders for built-in Libby by OverDrive. Check the live Kobo borrowing guide before relying on the list, because support can change with software and regional updates.

Kobo model Built-in Libby/OverDrive listed?
Kobo Libra Colour Yes
Kobo Clara Colour Yes
Kobo Clara BW Yes
Kobo Elipsa 2E Yes
Kobo Clara 2E Yes
Kobo Sage Yes
Kobo Libra 2 Yes
Kobo Elipsa Yes
Kobo Nia Yes
Kobo Libra H2O Yes
Kobo Forma Yes
Kobo Aura ONE Yes
Kobo Aura Edition 2 Yes
Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2 Yes
Kobo Clara HD Yes

If your exact model is not listed, do not assume that a firmware update will add the feature. Use the library-website transfer route described below and consult Kobo’s instructions for that reader. Model names such as “Clara” or “Libra” cover several generations, so identify the full model rather than relying on the family name or screen size.

Is OverDrive available in my country and library?

Kobo lists built-in availability in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. Availability in one of those countries does not mean that every local library participates. Your library must offer OverDrive or Libby lending, and the particular ebook must be licensed for borrowing and supported on Kobo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A library card must be valid for the participating library system.
  • The library may have different collections, lending periods, limits, and wait lists from another library in the same country.
  • A title can appear in Libby yet be unavailable for Kobo delivery.
  • Kobo notes that the feature may not be available through your local library and that some library titles are not available from Kobo.

These conditions explain why a friend in the same country can borrow a book while your Kobo cannot: the decisive factors are the library’s catalogue and the title’s delivery rights, not only the eReader’s model. If your library is not listed in Kobo’s on-device search, ask the library whether it supports Libby and which devices it officially supports; do not infer support from another library’s setup.

What do I need before setting up borrowing?

  • An eligible library card and its PIN or password.
  • A library that supports Libby or OverDrive lending.
  • A Kobo model listed for built-in borrowing, if you want to borrow directly on the eReader.
  • Wi-Fi or another internet connection for sign-in and synchronization.
  • A Kobo account and the latest practical software for your device.

Kobo recommends signing in with your library card number and PIN. Its guidance favors the QR-code sign-in flow; the alternative is to visit the web address shown on the Kobo and enter the code displayed on the eReader. An OverDrive account is not a replacement for a library card or the library’s account, as explained by Kobo in its account-and-card explanation.

Have the card physically or digitally available while setting up. A library may use a separate PIN from the password for its general website, and the Kobo sign-in screen may require the exact card number format issued by that library. If the card is shared across several branches, select the library system that actually owns the OverDrive collection.

How do I borrow library books directly on a compatible Kobo?

Use this route when your model appears on Kobo’s supported list and your library participates.

  1. Connect the library card. From the Kobo account or the on-device OverDrive/Libby setup, select your library and enter the card number and PIN. Complete the QR-code flow when offered. If you use the web alternative, enter the exact address and code shown on the Kobo.
  2. Open the catalogue. On the eReader home screen, select Discover, then OverDrive.
  3. Find the ebook. Search by title, author, or subject and open the book’s listing. Confirm that the format offered is an ebook that Kobo can deliver.
  4. Borrow or place a hold. Select Borrow with OverDrive/Libby App. If the copy is unavailable, choose the hold option when it is shown. Kobo says it will email you when a held title becomes available.
  5. Sync the eReader. Return to the Kobo’s synchronization control and let it connect to Wi-Fi. The available loan should download to your library; opening it may require one more sync if the catalogue was still updating.

Loans are tied to the card used for the Kobo’s OverDrive sign-in. If you have cards from multiple library systems, verify which card is active before borrowing. The on-device search may show recommendations or titles that are not currently lendable; open the individual listing to see whether borrowing, a hold, or no Kobo delivery is offered.

Can I borrow in Libby or on my library’s website and read on Kobo?

Yes, when the ebook is Kobo-compatible. Borrow the title in the Libby app or through the library’s website, then synchronize the Kobo. The eReader must be signed in to OverDrive with the same library card used for the loan; Libby gives this same-card requirement in its Kobo reading instructions.

  1. Open Libby or your library’s OverDrive catalogue.
  2. Sign in to the library card you intend to use on the Kobo.
  3. Borrow the title, or select Place hold if no copy is available.
  4. On the Kobo, connect to Wi-Fi and run a full sync.
  5. Look in the Kobo library for the new loan and open it.

Not every Libby ebook is compatible with Kobo. A loan can therefore be valid in Libby but absent from the eReader. In that case, use Libby on a supported phone, tablet, or computer, or follow the manual-transfer instructions if Kobo and the library offer that option for the title.

Browsing in Libby can be easier when you want filters, recommendations, or several library cards, while borrowing on the Kobo keeps the process on one device. Neither route changes the lending rules set by the library. The loan period, number of renewals, and hold queue come from the library’s catalogue, not from Kobo.

What if my Kobo model is not listed?

Kobo directs owners of unlisted readers to its separate library-website procedure rather than the built-in Discover workflow. Start with the official borrowing guide, select the instructions for your model, and use the library’s website to check out the book.

Some library titles that are not sold through Kobo require Adobe Digital Editions. In that situation, the library’s download and transfer instructions determine the exact sequence: authorize the computer and software as requested, download the library’s loan file, and transfer the authorized ebook to the Kobo according to Kobo’s instructions. Do not expect the title to appear through a normal Kobo sync if it was delivered through this manual route.

Manual transfer is more involved than built-in borrowing because it depends on a computer, a USB connection, the library’s file format, and Adobe Digital Editions authorization. If the title’s listing does not provide a Kobo-compatible option, the library or Kobo support page should identify whether this workflow is supported. Keep the same library account throughout the download and authorization steps; switching accounts can make an authorized file appear unavailable.

Why isn’t my Libby book showing up on my Kobo?

Work through these checks in order; each addresses a different failure point.

1. The Kobo has not synchronized

Connect to Wi-Fi and run a manual sync. A loan borrowed moments ago may not appear until the Kobo refreshes its catalogue and account data. If the device was offline during checkout, leave it connected long enough to complete the sync rather than relying only on the library’s home screen refresh.

  • BROWSE & READ EBOOKS IN FULL COLOR - Book covers, comics, graphic novels, illustrations, note-taking and more come to life. No glare in sunlight, no notifications - just you and your eBooks in full-color

2. Different library cards are being used

Compare the card shown in Libby with the card linked under the Kobo’s OverDrive settings. Remove the incorrect card and add the one that made the loan, then sync again. This is especially important when a household shares one Kobo but each reader has a different card.

3. The title is not Kobo-compatible

Libby’s catalogue is broader than Kobo’s supported delivery catalogue. If the loan is visible in Libby but never arrives after a correct sync, check the title’s format and Kobo availability. Kobo explicitly warns that some library titles are not available through Kobo.

4. The title needs a manual transfer

For some books not sold by Kobo, Kobo points to Adobe Digital Editions. Follow the library-website instructions for that specific title instead of repeating the built-in sync process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. The card or PIN is no longer valid

Sign-in can fail when a card expires, a PIN changes, or the library changes authentication. Confirm the credentials with the library, then repeat the QR-code or displayed-code sign-in flow.

6. The Kobo software signed you out

Kobo says that updating an eReader to software version 6.0 or later may sign users out. Add the library card again, complete authentication, and sync. Kobo’s Libby help page describes this sign-in behavior.

7. The hold has not become available yet

A hold is not a loan until the library releases a copy. Wait for the library’s availability email or Libby notification, borrow it within the stated time, and then sync the Kobo. Syncing before the hold is released cannot download the book.

Why does Kobo ask for a library card instead of an OverDrive password?

OverDrive removed email-and-password sign-in on July 14, 2025. Kobo eReader users should now authenticate with a library card number and PIN. If an old instruction tells you to enter an OverDrive email address and password, it is out of date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When authentication fails, use the QR-code option first. If that does not work, enter the web address and code displayed by the Kobo, check that the card belongs to the selected library, and ask the library to verify the PIN. Re-adding the card may also be necessary after a software update to version 6.0 or later.

What happens when a loan expires or a title is on hold?

Unavailable ebooks can be placed on hold when the library offers that option. Kobo says it will email you when the copy becomes available; you then need to sync the eReader so the new loan can download.

Borrowed items are automatically returned at the end of their lending period. Kobo states: “Items you’ve borrowed are automatically returned at the end of their lending period.” You do not need to find a return button on the Kobo, although an early-return option may be provided by the library service. A returned or expired loan will no longer open on the eReader.

If you return a title early in Libby or through the library website, sync the Kobo afterward so its loan status updates. A device that has not connected recently may continue to display the cover until it refreshes, but the expired loan cannot be renewed from Kobo unless the library offers a new checkout.

Which borrowing method should I choose?

Situation Best route What to expect
Supported Kobo, participating library, compatible title Discover > OverDrive on the Kobo Card/PIN setup, on-device search, borrow, then sync
You prefer browsing on a phone or computer Libby or library website, followed by Kobo sync The same library card must be linked on both services
Model is not on Kobo’s built-in list Library-website transfer Use Kobo’s model-specific instructions; some titles require Adobe Digital Editions
Title appears in Libby but not on Kobo Check Kobo compatibility, then use another supported Libby device or manual transfer if offered Not every Libby loan can be delivered to Kobo
Copy is unavailable Place a hold Wait for the library’s notification and sync when it becomes available

The built-in route has the least equipment and is usually fastest for a supported title. The Libby-first route is convenient for discovery and account management. Manual transfer is the fallback, not a universal workaround: it only works when the library’s file and Kobo’s instructions support it.

Should I choose a Kobo specifically for library borrowing?

Choose by exact model and library compatibility rather than by the Kobo name alone. Current listed options include the Kobo Clara BW and Kobo Libra Colour, but the full supported list above is the deciding reference. Confirm that your country and library participate before buying an eReader for this purpose.

If you already own a compatible Kobo, borrowing does not require a new device. If your model is unlisted, compare the extra computer-and-transfer steps of Adobe Digital Editions with simply reading the loan in Libby on a supported phone, tablet, or computer. The library’s catalogue and the individual title’s rights can still limit delivery regardless of the model you select.

There is no separate Kobo purchase requirement for library borrowing. A reader can use Libby on another supported device, while a Kobo owner may still need that alternative for titles excluded from Kobo delivery. Treat built-in borrowing as a convenience feature, not a promise that every library ebook will open on the eReader.

Quick checklist before contacting support

  • Record the exact Kobo model name, not just the screen size.
  • Check that the model appears on Kobo’s current support page.
  • Confirm your country is one where Kobo lists built-in availability.
  • Verify that your library participates and that the card has not expired.
  • Use the same card number in Libby and on the Kobo.
  • Run a Wi-Fi sync after borrowing or after a hold becomes available.
  • Check whether the specific title is Kobo-compatible.
  • Re-add the card if software version 6.0 or later signed you out.
  • Use Kobo’s library-website and Adobe Digital Editions instructions for unsupported models or titles that require manual transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a library card to use OverDrive on Kobo?

Yes. Built-in borrowing requires a valid card and the library’s PIN or password. An OverDrive account does not replace the library card or library account.

Can I use Libby on a Kobo without buying a Kobo?

Yes. Libby can be used on another supported phone, tablet, or computer. Buying a Kobo is optional, and a Kobo is not required for library borrowing.

Why isn’t my Libby book showing up on my Kobo?

Sync the Kobo over Wi-Fi, confirm that the same library card made the loan and is linked on the Kobo, and check that the title is Kobo-compatible. Some Libby loans cannot be delivered to Kobo and may require Libby on another device or a manual Adobe Digital Editions transfer.

Which Kobo models work with OverDrive?

Kobo lists Libra Colour, Clara Colour, Clara BW, Elipsa 2E, Clara 2E, Sage, Libra 2, Elipsa, Nia, Libra H2O, Forma, Aura ONE, Aura Edition 2, Aura H2O Edition 2, and Clara HD. Verify the current Kobo support page because availability can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I borrow a book on my phone and read it on Kobo?

Yes, if the title is compatible. Borrow it in Libby or on the library website with the same card linked to the Kobo, then sync the eReader.

What if my Kobo is not on the supported-model list?

Use Kobo’s library-website instructions for that model. Some titles require a computer, USB transfer, and Adobe Digital Editions rather than normal Kobo synchronization.

How are Kobo library ebooks returned?

Kobo says borrowed items are automatically returned when the lending period ends. If you return one early in Libby or through the library, sync the Kobo to update its status.

Why did Kobo ask me to sign in again?

Kobo says an eReader software update to version 6.0 or later may sign users out. Add the library card again using the QR-code or displayed-code flow, then sync.

The Bottom Line

For a supported Kobo in a participating country and library, link the correct library card, choose Discover > OverDrive, borrow an eligible ebook, and sync. If you borrow in Libby, use the same card on both services. When a title or model is not supported, switch to Libby on another device or follow Kobo’s library-website and Adobe Digital Editions transfer instructions.
