Borrow the ebook in Libby first, then send it to your Kindle from the loan’s Read With… menu. Kindle delivery works only with eligible titles from U.S. libraries; if a title does not offer Kindle, you can still read it in Libby on a supported device.
Before you borrow: check library and title eligibility
Kindle delivery through Libby is available for U.S. libraries, and not every ebook supports it. Libby’s guidance is that “You can read most Libby books on a Kindle ereader (available in the U.S. only).” Check the title’s Read With section or filter for Kindle-readable titles in Libby before borrowing. Libby’s getting-started guide and Kindle reading instructions explain the availability limits.

You need a library card for the library you add to Libby. Some libraries offer instant digital cards, but each library sets its own signup rules. The titles and formats you see depend on that library’s collection. Libby’s setup guide covers adding a library and signing in.
How to borrow a library ebook and send it to Kindle
- Add your library and sign in. In Libby, find your library and enter your library card details, or follow the library’s instructions for getting a card.
- Find an available ebook and borrow it. If the title is checked out, place a hold if that option is offered. When you confirm a loan, Libby may let you change the loan period, depending on the options your library provides. See Libby’s quick-start instructions.
- Open the loan’s reading options. Go to Shelf, then Loans. Tap Read With… and choose Kindle. The Kindle choice appears only for eligible titles.
- Complete the Amazon handoff. Libby opens Amazon. Sign in to the Amazon account associated with your Kindle if asked, then tap Get Library Book. The loan should be delivered to devices associated with that Amazon account. Libby describes this process in its Kindle instructions.
Choose between Kindle delivery and reading in Libby
| Reading path | Where you read | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Send to Kindle | A Kindle e-reader or another device associated with your Amazon account | Available only for eligible titles borrowed from U.S. libraries. Manage delivery and early return through Amazon or the Kindle device. |
| Read in Libby | Libby on a supported mobile device or in a computer browser | A Kindle is not required. Libby recommends its app for Fire tablets. Read the loan’s available formats and options in Libby. |
To use the Libby reading path, select Libby rather than Kindle in the loan’s Read With… options. Libby’s loan-reading guide explains where to find reading options.

If the Kindle option is missing
Work through these checks before assuming there is a problem with your Kindle:
- Check the library’s location. Libby Kindle delivery is limited to U.S. libraries.
- Check this title’s formats. Open the title’s Read With section. Kindle support is title-specific, even when other books in the same library can be sent to Kindle.
- Check your reading preference. If Libby is set as the reading destination, the Kindle choice may not be selected. Review the loan’s reading options.
- Check whether you downloaded another format. Libby says downloading another format, such as EPUB, can prevent Kindle delivery for that loan. You may need to borrow the title again to send it to Kindle.
These checks follow Libby’s Kindle troubleshooting guidance.

If the book does not appear on your Kindle
If you tapped Get Library Book but cannot find the loan on the device you intended, use Amazon’s device-delivery controls:
- Open Amazon’s Your Books page and find the borrowed title.
- Choose Deliver or remove from device for that title.
- Select the Kindle you want to receive the book, then save your choice.
If it still does not arrive, follow Amazon’s additional Kindle troubleshooting steps. Libby also points to deregistering and re-registering the Kindle as a possible next step. See Libby’s delivery troubleshooting page.

How returns work for Kindle loans
Libby loans return automatically on their due dates. If you want to return a Kindle book early, do it through Amazon or the Kindle e-reader; Libby’s early-return control does not apply to Kindle-delivered books. Libby’s return instructions explain the distinction.
